Chapter One
The sun streams in through the gap in the curtains landing directly on my face. I shut my eyes tightly and try to block out the light but I can't. Groaning in frustration, I drag my self off the bed. Checking my bedside alarm clock, I scream.. "8:45! Oh God..Greg's gonna kill me " I can't believe I slept through the alarm's shrill ringing. Rushing to my small bathroom, I dab some toothpaste on my brush, I quickly brush and rinse my mouth. I turn on the shower flicking the warm water switch but instead freezing cold water blasted out from the showerhead. Just great Getting out, I throw on a long sleeve patterned shirt, tight fitting skirt and my old flats. I quickly run a hairbrush through my dark brown curls trying to untangle and tame it. "Ugh... Stupid hair", I mutter looking my reflection in the mirror. I pick up my bag and double check the room making sure I didn't forget anything. I walk out of my apartment, locking the door behind me and I hurry to the bus stop, praying I haven't missed the last bus for the morning. Getting to the bus stop, I see the bus closing it's doors. Waving my hands frantically trying to get the driver's attention, I trip on a stone. I curse loudly making some passersby look at me oddly. Luckily, the bus stops and I limp run to it, thanking the driver before settling in my seat. I look out the window watching buildings, trees and people fly by. Getting to my bus stop, I alighted and cross the busy walkways and hurrying to my workplace. Two ambulances rush by nearly splattering my clothes with mud but I'm too caught up with wondering about the people inside to care. That's when I notice the sounds of sirens echoing around the city and people clustering together whispering harshly to one another. As curious as I felt, I had to get to work or I'll risk the wrath of my boss. I shrugged it off seeing my destination. A big building with a sign at the top, 'Johnson's Insurance Company'. Climbing up the stairs, I open the door and enter the warm lobby. Sitting behind a small desk is Miss Olsen, a middle age woman with sharp grey eyes and blond hair. She looks at me then looks back at the clock on her desk. " Well, aren't you early", she drawls sarcastically. Ignoring her, I enter into the elevator and go up to the third floor. The elevator opens and I hurry out trying to avoid Greg seeing me. Sneaking to the open office that I share with eleven other people, I bump into a hard body, Matt's. "I'm so s-sorry", I stutter looking up at his blue eyes and turning red from my clumsiness and his closeness. "It's okay..Bad morning?" "Yeah, you can say that". I step out of his embrace and he clears his throat. Turning to head to my desk, I see an angry looking Greg staring at me. Oh oh Ever since I've turned him down, he has always mean and being my superior by two levels, Greg takes great joy in making my life at work hell. I sigh and limp toward him, preparing myself for his rants. "Pearl, what time is it?" "9:26" "What time do we open?" "8:00" "Is this your firm" "No" "Then why the hell are you just coming by this time?!" I say nothing. "Anyway, since you weren't here and decided to come at your leisure time, I've taken the pleasure of giving you papers to arrange" Looking to my desk, I see cartons and cartons full of papers. "Sort through them. The useless ones throw them away and the useful ones, arrange them according to their dates on the film then separate them into different files and arrange back into the carton" I looked at him incredulously and he smirks. U can't be serious! Jerk. Fuming, I got to my desk and begin my work. I grumble under my breath and see Gina smirking at me. I scoff and continue my work ignoring her. After what seems like hours, I'm finally through. I massage my stiff neck and roll my sore shoulders. Remembering my fall from this morning, I look at my knees, thankfully they were only grazed and not bleeding. Checking the time, I see it's few minutes to lunch. Hurray! I leave for the elevator. Seeing Matt inside, I smile at him and he smiles back. "Going for lunch?",he asks "Yup" "I know a nice place two streets down. It's far better than eating the food they serve here in the cafeteria" I laugh. "If you say so". "But you're gonna pay". "What...fine", I fake pout and sigh but am actually happy. He is like the only one that notices me or try to talk to me. Greg not counted of course Sadly, I'm an orphan. After my parents died when I was 8, I moved from one foster home to the other till I was 16. But the family that took me in only wanted me because of the money I bring from the social services. After the physical and verbal abuse, I grew up to be quite antisocial. When I was 22, I parked out of the house, came to the city, got a job and got my apartment with my first salary. Since then things have been good and I've worked here for a year now. Leaving the elevator, we see Miss Olsen with her glasses perched on her nose squinting at a book. Noticing us, she closes the book. "Where to?" None of your business "Lunch...would you like anything?",Matt asks "A burger and fries...thanks hun", she winks at him Ugh "Sure", Matt replies giving her a forced smile. "I think she likes you", I whisper to him wiggling my brows at him "Uh....no",he says with grimace "Sure, she does" "No, she doesn't" "She does" I continued to tease him as we left the building and walked down the street. With Matt's teasing, it was easy to ignore the din of sirens and push down the feeling of foreboding in the pit of my stomach.
