Chapter One - Life of a Princess
Dear readers, please note I wrote this story a very long time ago, back when I was still learning and developing as a writer, and so this work doesn't reflect me as a writer now. This story isn't very diverse, lacks representation, and I want to make readers aware of that here so they can make an informed decision on whether to read or not. I have worked on improving representation in my later works. This is also a dark vampire romance for adult readers (18+). Content and Trigger Warnings: death, gore, descriptions of blood, violence, loss of a parent, loss of a child, mention of arranged marriage, physical and mental abuse. Tropes: enemies to lovers, forbidden romance * * *  Her screams rang in my ears. I winced but kept her body pressed firm on my bed. She grabbed my satin sheets and twisted them around her hands in distress. The girl could flail and shout all she liked, there was no escape and no one to hear her cries, or no one that cared. My hands clamped around her warm human legs, and I ducked my head going in for a second bite. I drained more of her life from her body, but she still screamed. “Shhh…” I hissed, but she wasn’t listening. The terror had set in, with her eyes wild like an animal trapped in a cage. “Princess, let me to keep her quiet while you eat?” My servant, Grant, hovered behind me. He stepped from foot to foot and watching me with black beady eyes. In a way this kill was as much for him as it was for me. My necromancer servant walked around my king-sized bed and held down the girl. He used his super human strength to keep her still and quiet, wrapping his hand over her mouth. I closed my own eyes and went in for the final bite. After, there was silence. Rising to my feet, I brushed down the silk fabric of my dress. It was an old dress from the 1920’s. There was beautiful beading around the neckline and the fabric was smooth to the touch. It was one of my favourite dresses, but I felt like a change, something from this decade. I walked over to a small mirror on the wall and wiped the remaining blood from my lips. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Grant still holding the girl. “You can let her go now. She’s not going to scream anymore.” I stood at the doorway to my large dressing room. “Anyway, you can have her. She’s all yours.” “Thank you! Thank you, Princess Mary.” He stood up, his back hunched over but his eyes filling with light. The life he lived was hard. Cursed by the devil himself, Grant had to steal the life force that remained in humans after death. He would use Black Magic on the girl’s lifeless body to satisfy the curse on his head. He would forever live a half-life, the magic warping his physical form. But by feeding off a human’s afterlife he gained strength, powers, and a way to extend his life further. Not a pretty way to live, but I wasn’t one to judge, I was in no position to. However, I would rather burn in the sun for eternity than live as he does. Only the bad and the ugly resided where I lived. I was bad, but at least I was pretty on the outside. You couldn’t say the same about Grant. “Don’t thank me, just clear up after you’re done. I want my room spotless before dawn.” “Yes Princess.” He bowed so deep his nose almost touched the carpet. Leaving Gran to his Black Magic, I went into my walk in wardrobe closing the door behind me. I slipped off the long silk dress and started searching the many racks of clothing. I passed dress after dress, until I reached the section where I kept clothes from this decade. I liked keeping my clothes arranged by date. It was easier to put a matching outfit together, especially when you had lived as long as I had. I found a strapless black number, which stopped far above the knee. I pulled it on with effort as the dress struggled against the curves of my body, but once it was on it looked divine. Modern clothes left little to the imagination but their flashy fabrics and form fitting styles gave me a sense of power. Not that I needed more power, I had plenty of that already. Vampires were strong, fast, and deadly in any outfit. After slipping on pair of black boots, I exited out of my dressing room and into the main corridor of my home. Paintings from around the world covered the walls. It was just a small sample of my father's vast art collection.  In the open main entrance the floors gleamed like fresh ice. My three brothers, Andrew, Max, and Cassius, were with their friend Charlie. They stood next to a statue of Venus, her marble cloth slipping from her smooth body. “Dressed to kill are we?” Max said, as I approached the boys. His smile was wide and wicked. “Aren’t I always dressed to kill,” I replied, grinning, and coming to a stop in front of them. They were quiet as they stood in the hall, too quiet. “What are you up to?” “Nothing much, sister,” Cassius answered, in his usual bored tone. He didn't look up, he was too busy inspecting the leather gloves covering his hands. “Nothing? I doubt that. It’s the start of a new night.” “We’re going out on a hunt, the usual, nothing special,” Charlie spoke, sending me one of his winning smiles, not that it had ever won me over. Charlie was cute with blond hair and a dimple in his chin, but sometimes I felt he was too cute to be a vampire. I liked my men, or vampires, more rugged, not baby faced. “If you’re going to hunt then I want to come with you. I had the most dreadful meal earlier and I need something to make up for it.” “Yeah we know, I think the whole palace heard your last meal,” Max teased, his smile grew even wider. I rolled my eyes. The rooms in the palace had been sound proofed years ago. I guess the extra thick walls hadn’t worked on my screaming meal. “Its not my fault the servants pick the worst humans! So can I join? Unlike the servants I know how to pick the good ones.” The thought of fresh blood with a sugary scent made my fangs ache. “No. Not tonight!” My father, tall with golden hair like a fallen angel, stood in the doorway to his large study. I was so distracted by the thought of fresh blood that I hadn’t noticed his looming presence. It was hard to miss my father in any room, he stood out. But he was swift and light on his feet, which gave him the unique ability to sneak up on even the most wary of vampires. If he came out with us tonight the hunt would be over in less than an hour – efficient but not as fun. “No?” I questioned, while the boys became like statues beside me. They looked at home next to the marble Venus. “Mary, you know you’re not allowed out hunting without me present. I may trust your brothers to look out for you, but I don’t trust anyone else. We are the last of a dying race, and there are those out there who seek to destroy us. I cannot go out tonight, I have things to get on with here. So no hunting tonight, Mary.” His word was law, that’s the way it was and always would be. He was more than just my father, he was a Vampire King and I was his only daughter. He turned to go back inside his study. “And boys, make sure you don’t embarrass me while you’re out,” he said, giving my brother Max a lengthy stare. He vanished into his study shutting the heavy oak doors behind him. “Shall we?” Cassius said, turning for the door, the others following his lead. “Wait!” I shouted, and they halted mid step. “I’m coming with you.” I marched forward grabbing the door handle. In a fraction of a second Cassius’ hand wrapped around my wrist. His leather glove creaked as his hand tighten. He then pulled me back from the door at an alarming rate. “You would disobey our father?” His voice was empty and his stare was cold. I looked into his dead eyes. “He will be in that study all night, like he has been for the past week. I need to get out of the palace, I’m going crazy! He won’t know I’m gone, and there is nothing you can do to stop me.” I yanked my arm free from his icy hold and pulled the door open. There was no fault in my decision. I needed to get out into the night air, see the stars, and taste the blood of a fresh kill. It was true that I had a charmed life in my father’s London palace, but there were only so many days I could keep myself entertained. Grant my loyal servant had helped me with my boredom, but even he was starting to get on my nerves. I wanted out, even if it was just for a few hours. Max was right behind me in an instant. “Lets go. The sooner we leave the sooner the fun starts!”
