Prologue
Elise Saunders was used to getting what she wanted. Good things came easy to her: money, clothes, power, infatuation. People loved her and she knew it. Boys loved her and she knew that too, and there was just something about having them wrapped around her little finger that sparked a certain kind of excitement within her. There was just something about the power she had over them that made her feel wonderfully proud, and if Elise was being honest, she liked the attention.             Tossing some of her blonde locks over her shoulder, Elise’s eyes scanned over the busy high school halls. She ran the joint. Milton High was hers and the students were most definitely hers to mess with. The students either feared her, wanted to be her friends, wanted to be her… Or straight up just wanted to be with her. It was funny to think about. So many of he students fell to their knees for her whenever she sent them a glance. Especially the boys. Especially Adam Bulken.             Oh, sweet, little, Adam Bulken. He had always had a crush on Elise, and who wouldn’t? With her long, golden locks and bright, blue eyes and perfectly dark eyelashes, she was almost a dream to look at. Every single guy in the school had a crush on Elise, and Adam was no different. Elise was sure of it.             Elise’s head tilted when she saw Adam walking down the hallway. He was a little smaller than everyone else, which meant it was easy for people to shove their shoulders into his, but he never fought back. Never stood up for himself. Elise watched as Adam pushed back the frames of his dark glasses, staring at him and his messy, dark hair and his creamy skin. For a second their eyes met. For just a second. But Adam’s white face quickly turned red and he almost tripped on the spot. He was blushing.             How cute, thought Elise. She gave him a little smile, loving the reaction she got out of him. It was without a doubt an ego boost to watch him trip and fumble with the books in his hands, and when he finally disappeared down the hall, Elise turned to her friends with a grin.             “He is so in love with me,” said Elise.             Her gang of friends turned to her with curious looks on their faces, looking as if they had no idea who she was talking about. Everyone was in love with Elise – she would have to be more specific.             “Who?” asked Amber, twirling her brown hair in her fingers.             “Yeah, who are you talking about?” asked Cassie.             “Are you talking about Brock? Basketball player Brock? Because we know that,” laughed Amy.             Elise rolled her eyes. “No, I’m talking about Adam.”             “Adam?” the three girls repeated in unison.             “Yeah, Adam Bulker or Belkin… Whatever the hell his name is,” Elise said with an eye roll. “Didn’t you just see the look he gave me? Poor thing looked soooo in love.”             The girls all shrugged.             “So?” wondered Amy, tussling her red locks. “That kid’s a loser. Why do you care if he likes you?”             Elise licked her lips. “Because, ladies. I’m about to show you just how good I am. I’m about to show you how easily I can wrap a guy around my finger. I bet you I can trick him into thinking that I like him. I’m a great actress.”             The girls all sent each other evil stares and quickly huddled together, whispering to each other like their words were some dark, hidden secrets.             “You really think you can make the biggest loser in the school fall for you? He might be a loser, but he’s a smart one,” said Cassie.             Elise snorted. “You underestimate just how good I am. I can promise you that he’ll fall for me.”             “That sounds like a bet,” smirked Cassie. “Is this a bet, girl?”             “You know what? I think it is a bet. If I win, you do all my homework for the month, and if you win, I’ll do yours. And you get the privilege of saying Adam didn’t fall for me… Even though that sounds ridiculous.”             Cassie hummed for a moment, her lips pressed together before she crossed her arms over her chest and nodded at her friend. “Alright, deal. Let’s see just how good of an actress you are. You’ve got three weeks to convince him he’s the love of your life.”             “Three weeks?” scoffed Elise. “Too easy.”                                                                                             *** And so two weeks passed, and Elise spent each and every one of those batting her eyelashes at Adam. When she first approached him he looked beyond freaked out: but then Elise begged for help with her English homework, and after pouting at him and running her hand up and down his arm, he gave in.             That was how it started. She’d spend afternoons at his house, lying in his bed and watching him intently and biting down on her bottom lip, doing her best to get him to look at her mouth and her pink, plush lips. He quickly gave in and would stare at her like she was the last girl left on the planet.             But things turned weird for Elise after the first week, when one day they were at his desk, typing away on his computer and working on her English assignment. Their hands touched for a short but sparking moment, and Elise could have sworn she felt the tiniest bit of desire for him. Despite how tiny it was she still leaned in for a kiss, pressing her lips to his and gripping his cheeks as she pushed her tongue into his mouth. And they kissed again and again and again, until one day it seemed like it was all they would do, and then Adam whispered out some words that made Elise’s heart and mind stop:             “I really, really like you,” he said softly, pecking his lips against her cheek. He sounded so sweet, so sincere, so full of love and passion and kindness.             It hit Elise like a truck. What the hell was she doing? She was supposed to be messing with him, not messing around with him.             The realisation made Elise come to her senses, and she told Adam to meet her by her lockers the next day in the morning. She wanted him to surprise her with a kiss in front of everyone so they could show the whole school just how happy they were to be together. Adam agreed, giddy and more than ready for the whole school to be let in on his newfound love – but Elise was furious at herself. How could she have kept on kissing him like that? Part of her felt rather pathetic for giving into him like that, but her devious plan would make it all better.             And so it happened on a Monday morning. Elise was by her locker, her friends all circled around her – they knew the plan. They knew what she was going to do. As she pulled out her books she felt some soft hands on her shoulders that spun her around, and she was greeted with the smiling, blushing face of Adam. He leaned in, his lips puckered as he moved closer to kiss her, and that was when she shoved her books against his chest and pushed him away with a shocked gasp.             “Ew, what the hell?” she shrieked. “What do you think you’re doing?”             Adam blushed more and more. His eyes darted left and right, watching as all the other students suddenly turned to look at him. “You… You said… The kiss?”             “I don’t know what drug you’re smoking, but I would never want to kiss you. Literally never. God. Get away from me.” Elise had shoved him back hard enough for him to fall to the floor, and while her friends screeched with laughter and Cassie wrapped a hand around Elise’s back, she couldn’t help but look back at him. Adam was on the floor, his eyes all wide and his cheeks bright red and his hair a mess. The laughter in the halls just seemed to get louder and louder, but Elise couldn’t bring herself to care.             She had one that bet with ease.
