My name’s Maya. Nice and simple, although my birth certificate says Amaya. It means ‘night rain’ in Japanese. My mom chose it because she said it sounded nice and soft, but try telling that to the kids at my school. They picked on me and laughed when the teachers called it out. But then it dawned on me that no one compelled me to use the full version, so I dropped the ‘A’ and established my name as Maya, which I felt fitted better with my appearance - black curly hair, hazel eyes, not very tall, but with curves in all the right places! “Maya Davis?” The lady in black was speaking. I shot up out of my seat. Daydreaming while waiting for an interview? Sometimes I can be so stupid. Harvey & Jefferson was the name of the law firm I was interviewing for, and I’d nearly blown it before the first hurdle. Walking along the corridor to meet the HR manager, the tall wooden door at the far end seemed so daunting. Behind that solid exterior, my immediate future was to be determined. Inside, I was invited to sit down and offered a glass of water. It was very warm, in direct contrast to the outside, where it was cold and windy. Snow was in the air. The door opened again and the HR manager was joined by a guy in his late thirties. He introduced himself as Liam Jefferson, one of the two shareholders. Although he was starting to lose his blonde hair and wasn’t particularly handsome, he was tall and slim with kindly blue eyes, a good body, soft chin and very sexy hands. I always like to look at a guy's hands, and I briefly imagined his running over the intimate curves of my naked body. Wake up, you dumb b***h, I said to myself. Concentrate! This guy could very well be your boss if you make it through this interview. The HR manager, Catalina, helped orient me with her opening salvo. "Tell us a bit about yourself." "My name is Maya. I’m 27-years-old and I’ve just finished the legal assistant course. I enjoy reading books and I like to… I like to… cook. Sweat was dripping down between my breasts, and I said the word ‘cook’ as though I’d just discovered it. Liam Jefferson then asked a few questions, constantly smiling at me and giving me the confidence to give of my best. Charm radiated from his every pore. ***** I was offered the job the next day. The HR manager said I could start working the following Monday. I was so happy. I could drop my job as a waitress. No more standing for ten hours No more night shifts. No more lousy weekend shifts. My mom said that God had heard her prayers and that a bright future lay ahead of me. Maybe I would even become a lawyer one day. As always, she was so proud of me, and her warm and lavish praise pricked at my conscience. If only she knew my guilty little secret… I shook the thought out of my head fast. I hadn’t actually done anything wrong, I’d just served the coffees. Sure, some of the clients had been subject to an extra bit of catering, like being fetched a newspaper and such like, and when they’d paid their bill, I’d put what had to be put in the cash register into the cash register and kept the rest of the money for my boss, who’d given me five percent. It was money I needed, as my salary wasn’t enough to pay the rent for Blue Ocean, the boarding house where my mom and I were staying. The extra cash also paid for my tuition and a second-hand car. Benjamin, my boss, was disappointed when I left. But he was the one who’d told me the law firm was hiring. They were his lawyers, although I didn't mention that I knew him or that I worked in his restaurant during the interview. "If it doesn’t work out, there’ll always be a place for you here,” he said. That was the last time we ever spoke.
