Shaken
I awoke with a jolt, hearing a high-pitched scream that made my ears ring and cleared any grogginess from my eyes. My room was clouded in a heavy blanket of darkness. Looking over at the clock on my nightstand, I realized it was only 5:45 am. This time an inhuman growl erupted from outside my window, the bed itself shook momentarily under me. Manticores. A terrifying image of the ravenous, bloodthirsty animal hybrids that terrorized humanity and brought us to the brink of extinction came to mind. I sprang to my feet ignoring the slightly chilly early morning air hitting my bare legs. I rushed out of my bedroom and within seconds was bursting through the front door, almost running into my older brother Alec in the process. We both stood in the doorway, neither of us breathing as we took in the gruesome sight. There on the unkept, broken pavement laid what remained of our father and stepmother in pools of their own blood and body parts. "Alora!" Forcing myself to tear my eyes away from their lifeless corpses, I glanced to the left just in time to see a large muddy brown wolf pinning my little sister to the ground. Too large to be a regular wolf from the wild. A single bead of sweat ran down my back, sending a shiver of fear through my body. The only thing worse than a Manticore attack would be a Werewolf one; they're sentient and know exactly what they're doing. Instead of acting on simple bloodlust like the mindless beasts that Manticores are. He reared his ugly head back, snarling and letting out another earth-shaking growl. I didn't allow myself any more time to think. My legs moved on their own quickly closing the distance. One second I was in the doorway, the next my fist was sinking into the wolf's jaw at least six feet above the ground. The wolf back stepped but recovered quickly and closed his large canines on my forearm before I could move. As I was lifted the muscles in my forearm burned as if I was set on fire. I could feel myself screaming, but my ears were ringing too loud to hear. A deep pop within the middle of my chest resonated throughout my body before the warm blood began to trickle down my arm. My entire body felt like it was engulfed in flames as I ground my teeth. "Alec! Move her!" I screeched out in a terrifyingly commanding voice, breaking my brother from his trance in the doorway. I was vaguely aware of the wolf moving to rip my arm back, but I was faster. I used my caged arm as leverage to wrap my legs around the wolf's neck, bringing me to his level. I focused all my strength and slammed my free fist repeatedly into the side of the wolf's head until he released me. I gripped on tight to the long hair and plunged my thumb as deep as possible into the wolf's eye. Glancing up I noticed that my brother had taken our little sister into the house and closed the door. I could just barely make out his shadow peeking through the curtains. "They're safe." Is all I managed to whisper before I was thrown off the bucking wolf. My back connected with a tree that had grown through the pavement knocking the wind from my already burning lungs. I gasped for air as a large paw bared down on me, sinking its claws into my chest. My skin became prickly and itchy as I heard the tree behind me start to creak under the sheer pressure. This is it. I forced my eyes open, ignoring the overwhelming pain pulsating throughout my body. My eyesight started to warp and become blurry but still, I tried to force my arms to move. I tried to kick and claw, anything to get the unmoving weight off of me, but to no avail. My body wasn't listening. Something is wrong. My entire body felt as if it was being pulled apart and put back together. Am I being crushed? Bones started to crack. It seemed almost as if they were moving and were poking through my skin at times. My arms jerked in sporadic movements beyond my control. Is it from the weight of the wolf? Am I having a seizure? A large grey mass collided with the brown wolf, knocking it off of me. Even though the brown wolf was no longer on top of me my body remained immovable. I used every ounce of strength I had left to crane my neck in the direction the wolf was thrown. Now there are two? A beautiful grey wolf towered over the whimpering brown one. I had thought the brown wolf was large but the grey one stood a good foot and a half taller on all four legs. He is massive. I should be terrified, so why am I relieved? The grey wolf turned slightly and through the haze, I could just barely meet his electric blue gaze. The tension in my chest began to dissipate, my muscles finally started to relax somewhat. A soft whisper, in a voice I had never heard before slipping into my thoughts. "Mate." Then I was no longer able to fight back the darkness. I even welcomed it. Anything to alleviate this unbearable pain coursing through me. Where am I? Everything burns, and my head is throbbing. All I can make out in my surroundings is a hazy white noise. Like someone left an old antique TV playing in the background. "You're safe." An alluring voice called in a melodic tone. Who are you? What happened? No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't pry my eyes open. "I am you. We are one and the same." The wolf must have knocked something in my head loose. That's it, I've finally lost it; maybe I'm actually dead. That would make things so much easier. "That's a bit rude. I can hear you, and feel what you feel. While our sanity may very well be questionable, we are very much alive." Startled, I tried to pick my next thoughts carefully. We? "You're an Amaruq." I paused, remembering that was the scientific name for the werewolves that we were taught in biology. I'm a f*****g werewolf? You've got to be joking. I'm 19 and haven't turned! Every werewolf turns at 16! I can't wrap my head around this. It's insane, almost as insane as me holding a full conversation with myself in complete and total darkness. "Calm down. Not everything you're taught by your government is true. We are not all bloodthirsty animals." Now that she mentioned it, the grey wolf didn't seem to want to harm me. Not that I should be worrying about some wolf right now. What happens now? But as my consciousness became more and more cloudy, she didn't make a sound. I slowly let myself drift away into the darkness with more questions than answers. In the year 2031 unexplainable animal attacks started to increase all over the world. The attacks were methodic, and organized. Along with being in large cities, office buildings, schools, stadiums, practical ly everywhere an animal shouldn't be. Eventually, the existence of werewolves, formally known as Amaruq, was leaked. Almost immediately a war bag between the two races. Amaruq had obviously been planning overthrowing the human government for a while before their existence became public knowledge. By sheer luck humans were almost always able to subdue or stop the Werewolves' attacks. That is up until a large-scale attack was played out in the major capitals of the world. The humans were no match for the Amaruq once they enlisted the help of some lab experiment gone wrong, now known as Manticores. Beijing, Washington DC, Paris, Tokyo, just to name a few. Most of the world's capital cities fell overnight to these monsters. Things that were hybrids of all different types of animals, insects, and various species of living things. They weren't sentient and had only one objective: to feed. To this day, the monsters run ramped through the ruins of the deserted cities all over the globe. No one really knows their origin, or why they came to be. Once they showed up on that fateful day, they spread like a swarm. Gradually, the Amaruq and Manticores managed to wipe out a large portion of the human population. Now, almost two hundred years later, humans live in caged cities all around the globe called Colonies with only remnants of what the world used to be. Growing up my father kept me and my brother moving from colony to colony because of his work in the North American government as a Minister on the Council. Once he met my stepmother and had my little sister, we settled down in the New York colony. I even work in a small coffee shop. I am human and I have never met an Amaruq before tonight. Before my father was murdered by one. I tried to open my eyes once again and to my surprise, warm light with an orangish hue filled the room. I must have been out for hours. I sat up, trying to take in the unfamiliar surroundings. It seemed like I was in some type of study. I had been sleeping on a red velvet couch that was adjacent to the door. Shelves covered the two opposite walls, filled with old rustic-looking books, but weirdly there wasn't a single speck of dust to be found. I glanced out the window to my left only to be greeted with recently paved roads and large dense cement buildings. I'm back in the colony. "You're awake." A deep rich voice resonated from the doorway. Goosebumps cascaded across my skin, almost daring me not to turn around. Slowly my gaze drifted to where the voice had originated. He peered down at me through his thick sandy brown almost grey hair. He folded his arms in front of his chest pulling his suit jacket tight over his toned biceps. My breath caught in my throat almost making me choke on my own saliva, my heartbeat slamming in my chest. His electric blue eyes turned sharp and were staring daggers at me. I stared back. This man was the wolf that saved me last night. There was no questioning it. He sighed heavily before taking a chair from a desk nearby and planting directly in front of me. Relaxing his shoulders a bit he scratched his chin seeming somewhat agitated. With a no-nonsense tone, he huffed out- "Look lady, I'm not a charity that's just gives out things for free. I'm not here to save you-" Breaking out of the dream-like trance I was in I cut him off. "Look ass hat, I don't have a clue what is going on or what I'm doing here. I do know that last night-" I stopped, remembering my father's lifeless body on the pavement. "Oh gods, last night-" I can't breathe. I try to rake in ragged breaths as my hands begin to shake. "What's wrong?" Worry lined his voice as he leaned in closer, careful to keep his hands from touching my shoulders. "Woah, little lady can punch a big bad wolf in the face but can't deal with the aftermath?" I let out a shaky chuckle as my breathing grew more sporadic and my increasing heartbeat flooded my ears. He's dead. The only parent I had left. The man who raised me. My chest heaved, and legs trembled. Black spots started to appear at the edge of my vision. Lilly. Oh gods, Lilly. She'll grow up without her parents. My mind raced to worry about my little sister. A strong and stable hand reached toward my face. Gently he wiped away tears I didn't know had fallen. Immediately, electricity erupted from his contact gliding over my skin. "She's okay. Your little sister is okay." Pulling my head up, I somehow knew that I was at least safe with this infuriating man. How did he know what I was thinking? "Shit." He huffed out in a hushed tone. "I am sorry for what happened to your parents, but-" "Parent. It was just my father. She was not my mother." I snapped, then immediately felt somewhat guilty. Susan was not the best person; she treated me and my older brother terribly. She only had Lilly to make my father stay with her, but even five years later my father still couldn't see past his rose-colored glasses. "I understand, you probably need time." The man dropped his hand, and suddenly my face was cold missing the warmth of his touch. He stood up and gestured to the desk where he had gotten the chair. His demeanor towards me is seemingly cold again, his shoulders ridged. All trace of warmth from his voice dissipated. "I have a change of clothes for you. Meet me downstairs once you've put them on. We need to talk." He met my eyes, sending me a soft smile that held traces of guilt. It was a completely opposite gesture of what he did when he first walked into the room. His actions were conflicting and confusing to me. Closing the door behind him, his footsteps receded down the hall. Why do I feel drawn to this man? I raised my hand to my cheek and touched the place his hand caressed. I don't know him, and he is at least in his mid-20s. Not to mention he is a werewolf. "He's our mate" The same melodic voice that told me I was an Amaruq whispered in my head, but when I asked her what she meant once again didn't respond. "What the hell?" Was all I muttered before getting off of the couch. I realized that I was still only wearing my oversized t-shirt and sleep shorts, covered in mud and blood. A slight blush crept up my neck noticing there were a bra and underwear on top of the pile of clothes. I smirked appreciating the fact that he at least seems like he cares. "He does kind of seem like an asshole though," I said to no one in particular. Grabbing the washrag I dipped it into the small bowl of water placed on the desk next to the clean clothes and towel. It felt nice to be able to get the mud and grime off of me, even if it wasn't a real shower.
