The Setting
The blood curdling scream pierced the quiet. The smell of sulfur and charred flesh permeated the crisp air. As the screams died leaving bones and ash in it's wake the fire raged on. It seemed even the embers were hard pressed to die out. These witch hunts were orchestrated to draw out one witch in particular, unfortunately fear took a life of it's own. Now small villages like this were burning "witches" without any proof. A witch watched on in disgust, not at the lost of life but the lack of knowledge. "Fools!" She whispered to no one in particular. Turning from the shadows that protected her to the forest, where she would hold her coven meeting. It was almost time! Sixteen long years and only two months left, then she would be the most powerful witch ever.  They were two months away from the ritual. It would fall just before the child's seventeenth birthday. The only problem keeping a teenager away from the capital. Every chance she gets the girl leaves to wander the forest, and then there was the dire wolf. How that creature always found her was still a mystery. Nia stared at the circle of witches that were discussing what their plans for after the ritual would be. Most of these meetings consisted of bickering and plotting. Everyone was tired of hiding and wanted just one town to themselves. What they didn't know was the lack of a coven after the ritual. The child was too powerful to take all that magic at once, it had to be gained over time.  Andraya Blevins, a lost girl, was staring at the full moon. The ethereal glow casted dark shadows in the surrounding forest, an eerie silence had enveloped the small area. It called to her the penetrating darkness of the forest. Whenever there was a meeting she explored the forest, sometimes allowing her magic to flow. Now standing in front of the tree line she smiled softly, a giant white wolf stood regally waiting for her. A soft giggle as she let her fingers run through the soft fur. This wolf was large and all muscle, he matched her height which at five foot zip was impressive.  When one looked out into the trees of the forest they saw darkness, but if one really looked they would see life and light. Andraya smiled as she stepped into the luminous path, pale moonlight little flickers of green light dotting the trees. The sounds of tiny feet rustling the dead leaves, to her this was peace. Not a sound from her bare feet as she moved gracefully. A soft tickle on her dainty feet as grass brushed against her smooth skin. Small swirls of green fluttered around her feet like dust in the air leaving the grass greener and healthier. A baritone voice resounds in her mind, her magic giving strength to her escort. 'Your magic is getting stronger. Are you even trying?' "I know. No not at the moment." The nod of his head was all he gave her. "Always so stoic?" Andraya spun to look at him and placed her hands behind her. "Don't rain on the parade Elijah I don't get many." At this she turned back around and skipped ahead of him. He chased after her laughing form no words were needed. Their exchange was over like so many before, now he would sit guard as she practiced elven magic. It was the only practice he could offer her, that Nia watched the young girl like a hawk. Telling her lies to keep her scared. They reached their destination, a small lake in the middle of the forest. Elijah howled his signal to other animals, it made Andraya happy and she was his whole reason to live.   The iridescent shimmer reflected the full moon on it's black surface. Andraya had removed her cloak, allowing some brown bunnies to curl up in it. The white foam sprayed back against the water, creating  a constant ripple in the mirror lake. The waterfall didn't have a deafening roar like some, but the constant flow was dull at best. Not one to tempt fate, Andraya would never try to jump down the waterfall. That white foam hid the sharp rocks underneath. Elijah had laid down his back towards the lake so he could watch for people. 'Hurry or you won't have enough time.' He told her as she stood up, when she took the first step the surface glowed. Placing his head down over those big paws, he never watched because he knew it was mesmerizing.
