PRANK ME, LOVE
SUMMARY: SHANE WOODS is just an average girl haunted with a painful past that she's trying to run away from until she met... JAMES HOULT. A mysterious but also overtly handsome creep whom Shane had found one morning sleeping on the driveway by the front of their house, lying on the ground like a half-dead man... SHANE & JAMES--two people who incidentally met by chance at a very unexpected time in a very weird place where an unlikely friendship would soon blossom into a connection neither had anticipated bringing them closer together. But their story wouldn't be an easy one to tell. As their relationship goes deeper, Shane finds herself trapped in a spiral of confusion and a growing list of suspicions about James and his mysterious character who seemed to be keeping something from her... Until eventually, time leads her to discover all of those secrets. One by one, all the old memories from Shane's past that she had been burying deep in the back of her mind, would visit her again and will begin messing with her present ones. And the deeper she goes back to the memories she had, the clearer things would become. Soon, Shane finds out that the reality she has been living in wasn't entirely all true... but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Will Shane and James ever really survive this prank that love has played on them? Will Shane finally be able to let go of what's holding her back and choose to move on? What will be her verdict? It's either she forgets it... or forget them not. Yet somehow, both ways still felt like a terrible curse. PRANK ME, LOVE by D El Vee ==================================================================================== "Baby, this world is a place for beginners, Only served with the virtue of words and time, When the writer puts his pen on the paper, Only the right things would end up in a rhyme." -Anonymous This is for J,  for giving me the time in the world and believing in the things  I could do to change fate. These were the words I just told him in a croaked voice, still trying to be strong. I heard the faint cacophony noises of the soft rain hitting against the glass window behind me. Like sad music, it invaded my ears and my consciousness. I tightened my grasp over his pale big hand, tucked carefully between my small ones. It was ice cold and it reminded me of fear and hopelessness. I looked straight into those soft green orbs that never failed to mesmerize me every time I stare at them.  He was smiling back at me, I could barely see his gaze and the curved lips through the oxygen mask covering half of his face. But he was visibly breathing heavily, denser than he did yesterday. His eyes crinkled slowly, as he met my eyes and scanned the rest of my features. Maybe he was now memorizing my face because I knew and he knew this was it. Something was about to happen... And I was very afraid.  I hold onto the only thing that had been giving me hope all this time--his wrist. I touched the part just where I could feel his soft pulse--it was slow but it felt reassuring--because I'm just too paranoid right now. I knew the fat tears were just threatening to come out any second from beneath my eyes but I tried hard to hold them back because I can't bear looking sad in front of him. He was obviously struggling to breathe but he was trying so hard not to show it while he looked back at me.  The only noise surrounding the silence around us was the voice of the doctor speaking faintly from a near distance. I could not clearly comprehend what he was talking about, but it seemed to be something really important. Yet I don't really care listening to him right now. I just wanted to savor this entire moment. This was far more important. This was the only one of those moments I could never just let on passing by. He looked into my eyes and I could feel it. He wanted me to give it up. But something inside me still wanted to believe this is not the last time yet. "Tell me a joke, Shai." he suddenly requested to me in a frail husky voice. I took a moment to stare into his eyes, showing signs that it was slowly losing its own brightness as he struggled to blink back.  "A joke?" I tried to chuckle despite the very big lump stuck on my throat, "Well, let's see... Hmm..." I shifted my eyes towards the ceiling, keeping the tears at bay as I tried to come up with a good one to tell. But I can't think of at least any, to be honest. What was I even trying to do? This was pathetic. How can I tell a joke in this kind of situation? I can't. It's t*****e. "Okay," But I tried, "I know one..." But somehow, the joke wasn't even that funny. It was the most terrible joke I've ever said. Because by the time I ended the punch line trying to laugh with him, the monitor by his side sounded. It was the sound that haunted me until I close my eyes. It was a sound I would never get to erase from my memory ever... The sound of a long endless nightmare. Do you know how loud the sound of a flatline is? Cause I do. And it was deafening. I could still hear the buzz sound ringing my ears even in my sleep. The sound was frightening, and the sound never went away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
