Mysterious Hotel
Prologue From a tender age, Kate radiated with intelligence and promise. She was a brilliant child who seemed to have everything any young heart could ever desire. She held a unique place in her parents' lives, for Kate was their only child. Prior to Kate's birth, her mother had endured a series of heartbreaking miscarriages. Eventually, when Kate did come into the world, it was under circumstances so delicate that the doctors urged her mother to avoid any further attempts at pregnancy, as it posed a grave risk to her life. Born in Zambia, Kate's life was marked by constant movement due to the demands of her parents' professions, spanning across an impressive array of locations – London, New York, Washington DC, Dubai, Cape Town, Nairobi, and even Australia. In 2015, her parents returned to Zambia to undertake a project, and six months after completing her diploma in Business Administration from the University of South Africa, Kate joined them. Recognizing the value of higher education, she embarked on a journey to earn her degree in Business Administration at Lusaka University. Tragedy struck when Kate was merely 21 years old. Her parents, the pillars of her world, were taken from her in a horrific car accident. Left orphaned and heartbroken, Kate inherited a house in Olympia and a guest house in Ibex Hill. While relatives urged her to move to Canada to be with her extended family, she made a resolute decision to remain in Lusaka, the place that held memories of her parents. Opting not to abandon her life there, she chose to turn down her grandparents' offer. Instead, she decided to rent out the spacious family home and settle into a cozy flat in Northmead. A turning point approached as Janet's birthday neared, a mere week before Kate's scheduled commencement of work at Palmer Enterprise. The two inseparable friends had always managed to weave excitement into their moments together. This time was no different. They crafted a thrilling weekend that revolved around joy and celebration. The culmination was an ambitious plan to set the city ablaze with unforgettable memories. Their adventure commenced with a leisurely lunch at "The Corner Café," followed by a progression to "Chicago's" for drinks, and finally leading to the exuberant atmosphere of "Granddaddy's." As the evening unfolded, laughter, drinks, and camaraderie flowed freely, and the night concluded with the two friends embracing the sheer thrill of being young and carefree. Present Day Kate’s P.O.V I wake up with a throbbing headache that I am fairly certain is the aftermath of last night's drinks. The room spins around me as I slowly open my eyes and take in my surroundings. I find myself in an enormous super king-sized bed, in a room so spacious that my groggy brain struggles to process it all. It's definitely not my room or Janet's. It hits me like a ton of bricks: I'm in a hotel room. My heart skips a beat or two as the realization sinks in. "What on earth happened last night and how did I end up here?" I murmur to myself, my mind racing to piece together the events that led to this bewildering situation. Panic starts to creep in as I realize that my lucky diamond bracelet, the one thing I never go anywhere without, is conspicuously absent from my wrist. This bracelet was a precious gift from my parents on my 21st birthday, a symbol of their love that I've cherished deeply. "Was I robbed last night?" I attempt to recollect, but my memories are frustratingly hazy. This isn't like me at all, waking up in a disarrayed hotel room with clothes and underwear scattered all over the floor. There must be something, some trace of last night's escapades that I can recall. Gathering my resolve, I climb out of bed and decide to take a soothing shower to clear my head. It's only when I make my way to the reception that I finally grasp my location, Radisson Blu Hotel. A cab ride later, I'm back at my flat, fumbling in my purse for my keys. Instead, I discover my phone, now off due to a drained battery. I plug it in to charge, my heart racing as I hear the flurry of missed call and message notifications echoing from the bathroom. I retrieve the messages when I get back to my room: 02:45am: Kate, where are you? 03:50am: I've been calling you for over an hour! Where are you? 03:52am: KATHERINE ELIZABETH MAY! WHERE ARE YOU? I AM WORRIED SICK!!!! 04:15am: OKAY PLEASE JUST CALL ME BACK. 04:20am: YOU DON’T DITCH YOUR BEST FRIEND LIKE THAT OVER A GUY. BUT CALL MEEEE AS YOU CHARGE YOUR PHONE!!!!!! Glancing at the time, it's already noon. Panic bubbles up as I realize I need to contact Janet before she assumes the worst and involves the authorities. I dial her number and brace myself for the impending scolding. "Kate, are you home?" Janet's voice is a mix of relief and exasperation. "Yeah, just got home actually..." I start, but before I can finish, the line goes dead. It's clear she's headed over. In no time, a knock sounds on my door. She usually barges right in, but this time, I hear the knock. I answer the door to an irate Janet. She marches into my room without waiting for an invitation, her frustration palpable. "How could you just vanish like that? Do you have any idea how worried I was? I called and called, and you were nowhere to be found. I sent message after message once I realized your phone was out of reach," Janet rants, pacing the room with animated gestures. Taking a deep breath, I take her hands in mine and guide her to sit beside me on the bed. I look into her eyes, seeking to calm her down. "I'm really sorry for not answering your calls and messages promptly. I got carried away with the tequila shots, and I woke up at the Radisson Blu Hotel. I was completely shocked, and honestly, I remember nothing from yesterday," I admit, my head still throbbing. Janet's anger subsides slightly, and she sighs. "What's the last thing you remember?" "We were at lunch, then Chicago's... that's all I can recall," I reply, puzzled by my own missing memories. Her eyebrows shoot up, disbelief colouring her features. "You can't be serious!" I shake my head, earnestly responding, "I wish I were, but that's honestly all I know. After Chicago's, it's a blank." Janet's eyes widen in shock, and her words chill me. "Oh no, Kate. We left Chicago's and went to Granddaddy's to meet Derick and his friends. You had way too much tequila and even smoked weed. Later, you said you wanted to leave and take a cab home. But then you called, saying you were at Drums, hanging out with Nathan and Kristina. They invited you for drinks, and when I called after some time, you didn't pick up. I got worried, so I reached out to Nathan, and he said you left about half an hour before my call, with some guy. I got really concerned." "WHAT?! I smoked weed?" Panic rushes through me, and I desperately grasp at straws of memory. Flashes of events start returning, and I abruptly realize I need to find a morning-after pill. I dash to my bathroom, Janet close behind, as I locate the pill box. "Tell me you didn't sleep with the guy you left with," Janet practically hisses. I shrug, my heart pounding. "I woke up in a hotel room, naked, with my clothes strewn around. I'm not taking any chances." Without hesitation, I gulp down the pill with water from the kitchen. The afternoon wears on as I struggle to piece together the puzzle of last night's events, trying to fill in the gaps in my memory. Janet stays with me, a reassuring presence during this bewildering ordeal. She's been working at Barclays Bank as an accountant for over six months now, a job she landed shortly after our graduation.
