Never Help a Stranger
World War II had ended, but the damage that the Germans had caused during the occupation and especially during their retirement after losing the Battle of Normandy had left the French in absolute misery. With many of their crops burned and almost without livestock, eating had become a privilege that only a few could aspire to. In the middle of this chaos, access to a piece of meat or an egg was almost impossible and only on the black market could you get fresh food to put in your mouth. Of course, their disproportionate prices were controlled by a group of unscrupulous people who could watch their compatriots starve to increase their fortune. Therefore, it is not strange that gold watches, jewels inherited generation after generation or works of art for a simple bread crust were paid. Monique, the protagonist of this story, was not oblivious to the situation. During the occupation she had been forced to "offer" her female charms to the German soldiers in order to eat. For this reason, among a crowd of almost hungry people, for a prolonged hunger for months (if not years), Monique stood out for its freshness and for having a little extra weight, something totally unusual and that made it seem more attractive than Most women. of his age. Monique knew that this was her best weapon to continue obtaining food, but the situation had become so tense that no one seemed to need their "services", they preferred to eat, instead of their company. A little distressed by hunger, which for the first time began to suffer since the conflict began, toured the market looking for someone who could "convince" him to give a fruit or a piece of bread. Some of the meat was unthinkable, since the only position still sent had prohibitive prices and its distributors seemed immune to its charms. While looking with a tearful mouth while filling a piece of meat for a man who had offered as payment a gold necklace, an old man fell almost at his feet. The crowd of people who crowded next to the meat stand had pushed the old man, who had been hit hard on the hip and seemed unable to get up. Perhaps Monique's morals were not the most appropriate, but without a doubt the girl had a big heart and, like a spring, she leaned to help the Lord help him get up. The old man, still in pain, asked him to help him get out of there and guide him to nearby stairs so he could sit down for a while. - Thank you very much for your help, miss, it seems that hunger makes people forget respect for their elders. - This is a true chaos - said Monique - you should not go near that damn place of meat, people become like animals when the offers start. - But if I had not approached now I would not have this - said the old man showing a package with about a kilo of meat. Monique's eyes widened, she had not seen the flesh so close in weeks. - What's your name, young lady? - said the gentleman who was smiling with a malicious smile while Monique had her eyes fixed on the food. - Monique - he said without taking his eyes off the meat. - Let's make a deal, Monique - said the old man who knew that the girl had caught his hook - If you help me take this piece of meat to my children who live near here, I promise you a steak just for you. After all, one favor is paid with another and I can hardly walk with the pain in my hip. Monique, who could not leave her amazement for such a good offer, just nodded as she looked at the old man. He handed him the package and asked him to wait a moment while he wrote on a piece of paper that he placed in an envelope that he then closed. - Meanwhile, I bring this letter to my son Matias - the old man said, taking away the importance - if not, he will not believe that I have promised him a piece of meat for the order haha After saying goodbye to the gentleman, who was still holding his hip with his hand in a clear symptom of pain, Monique went to the indicated address. It was on the other side of the square, crossing the market, but something disturbed him when he had advanced only a few meters. One of the vendors at the meat stand seemed to smile at him, but not one of those that men gave him to earn their favors, there was something perverse or malicious about her. She lowered her head a little scared and as if her feminine instinct warned her she felt something strange was happening. He turned to look at the old man but there was no one there, how could he have left so quickly and a few seconds before he could not get up? He continued his way to the address marked but there was something inside him that told him to be careful, a kind of intuition or sixth sense that asked him to run and never deliver that meat. But as we said, Monique was an honest girl who was unable to steal from an old man and despite her fear, she continued with her assignment. But something stopped her once she arrived at the place marked, the exact address was in a dark and hidden alley that was hidden from the indiscreet look of everyone who walked on the main street. Slightly frightened by the idea that the old man had devised a plan to rape her. He decided that the best thing was not to take risks, so he offered a coin of small value to a street boy to finish the job. He was waiting for him in the corner while he watched as the boy called to a dirty wooden door in which a peephole was opened by which a man leaned over to see who had called and verified that there was no one else with him. - Are you Matías? - said the boy - his father sends him this letter and this package of meat. The man did not make him wait, opened the door with the intention of receiving the package. But to the surprise of Monique, who watched everything from a distance, she did not grab the packet of meat, but instead held tightly to the boy's wrist and yanked it inside the house, closing the door tightly. They began to hear cries that were silenced in a few seconds ... The deafening bustle of the square had silenced the little one. But Monique had witnessed everything, so she shouted to a couple of soldiers who knew they were always watching that everything was in order when the market opened. - Please help, they just kidnapped a child! - Monique said as she pulled the arm of one of the soldiers guiding him to the place. In less than a minute the soldiers were knocking on the door of the place where the child had disappeared. A loud commotion was heard inside the building, a couple of men shouted and knocked on the door from the inside, it seemed that they were placing furniture and other heavy objects to prevent it from being opened with the kicks of the soldiers. Suddenly the noise ceased and seconds later, through one of the windows that had been on the roof, a man appeared and quickly jumped into the nearby building and disappeared from the view of Monique, who shouted warning the soldiers who were escaping from above. A second man came out and the soldiers warned by Monique shot him, one of the shots hit him right in the heart and he fell down the roof to the void, hitting the ground with a thunderous blow a few meters from Monique. After a couple of minutes, the military made sure no one else came out the window and returned to the door, which began to hit with more insistence until they were able to open it enough to remove the furniture with which the criminals had formed a barricade temporary that prevented access to the building. When they managed to enter they were stupefied, one of them had to leave immediately while vomiting, his stomach could not bear to witness such a macabre spectacle. From a hook hung the child face down with his throat cut, a bucket underneath collected all the blood. A few meters away there was a table that seemed to be used to separate the meat from the bone and where human remains could be seen as feet, hands and a head. Next to some bloody knives were several piles of human flesh that was ready to be packed. Meanwhile, Monique, oblivious to the human slaughterhouse that the military had seen, approached the man shot to death, and on closer inspection recognized him as one of the men who sold meat at the market. But what caught his attention most was that one of his pockets showed the envelope that the old man had given him. The woman bent down and after picking it up she decided to open it, inside she found the following written: "This is the last one I send you today, sales are better than ever" Of course when the soldiers went to the meat stand there was no one left, surely the fleeing man had managed to warn them. NOTE: Urban legends are very common that alert us to help others and much more when it comes to someone helpless as a child or an old man who seems to come out of nowhere and guide us to some desolate place. Even today it is usual to hear that a friend of a friend was raped for helping a lost child that ended up taking her to an alley or a woman asking for help that ended up robbing the person who helped her. Reality or legend? Without a doubt I would venture to say that on more than one occasion it became a reality.
