Prologue
Who am I? was the first thing that popped into my head. I wandered through the overcrowded streets of New York City. Looking left and looking right, all around me is filled with different emotions and people. You have happy, sad, elated, depressed and so on. I come across an old, brown bus bench that seemed as if it would fall into smithereens within seconds. With remorse, I sat down on the bench, waiting for the next bus to come. Thirty minutes later, Bus 4 stopped with an awful screech. I boarded the bus with the question, “Who am I?” bobbing throughout my brain. During the bumpy bus ride, I see locals rushing around the streets, jaywalking into traffic. Some are even inches away from being hit by a car! Seeing all these busy people made me wonder about the purpose of my life. As I was pondering my reason for being in existence, I heard someone call out.     “Hey, ma’am! Are you all right?”     “Yes sir, I am fine. Why are you asking?”, I replied back to the bus driver. It was odd. Bus drivers in New York City are ruthless. They didn’t care for your well being. It was an amazement to see a driver asking how you were. Perhaps this driver was bored out of his mind, driving the same old bus route for the past 20 years of his life.     “You seem lost in your thoughts. Is something bothering you? What troubles you, young lady?”, queried the driver. I contemplated. Should I answer him? Nah! He’s a stranger. People in New York are shady. Yeah, I definitely shouldn’t trust him.     “Nothing is wrong. I am just lonely.”, I carefully replied.     “Mhm” is all he said.     I ignored him for the rest of the ride. When the bus stopped at Central Park, I leaped off the bus in a heartbeat. I strolled around Central Park until I came up to a large, shady oak tree. This shall be my home for today. Why? You guessed it. I am homeless. My parents are nowhere to be found. I never knew who they were. All I know was that they were in a gang and left me on the doorstep of the orphanage in a tattered baby onesie. Quite frankly, I am on the run from the orphanage I resided and grew up at. The headmaster at the orphanage treated me like dirt beneath her shoes. After days of contemplation, I decided to make a run for it and magically escaped. Unfortunately, I have no place to go. I lay under the oak tree peacefully resting until I heard barking and screaming.     “Let go of me you stupid dog!!!”     I whip my head around only to see a handsome man wearing a fancy business suit trying to shake off a small puppy biting onto his pant leg. Seeing that the man was frantically trying to get the puppy to release his pant leg, I decided to help him. Besides, I loved puppies and helping people, killing two birds with one stone. I walked up to the man and bent down to see the puppy’s cute face. I made a whimpering sound that made the puppy turn its attention towards me. I spread my arms motioning for a hug. Surprisingly, the puppy leaped into my arms and cuddled me. I stood up with the puppy snuggled in my arms and faced the man. He gave me one glance and walked away without a word. From then on, that face was imprinted into my memory. I brought the puppy to the nearest animal shelter and dropped it off. With that, I left and returned back to the oak tree. By nightfall, I knew who I was. I was the lonely 19-year-old girl without a home. I was the lonely 19-year-old girl without a family. I was the lonely 19-year-old girl without any friends. I was the lonely 19-year-old girl named Patricia Simmons.
