“Sage,” he said softly, reaching his hand out to me.

“Don’t,” I continued, still pacing so that he couldn’t touch me. “You will not change me Xander, so don’t even try. I will not become ‘yours’ to do with as you please. I will not obey you. I will not spill my secrets and feelings to you and you’re just going to have to f*****g accept that.”

I didn’t know what was happening. I couldn’t stop yelling. I had never lost control like this. I didn’t even care if the things I was saying were making sense or not. Usually when I got this mad Jasmine fought to take over but she had disappeared from my mind, not wanting to fight with our mate.

I had been thinking about what he would want from his new position all week and here he was, finally asking for it.

“Sage…” he said again, this time with some sense of pain in his voice.

“No Xander! This is MY PACK! Yes you are my mate and I can’t stop thinking about you but the pack is more important! Strong Mountain is in a good place and a change in power will f**k everything up and I’m not letting my hard work go to waste and there’s nothing you can say that would convince me to step away and if you even think about trying to prevent me from fighting for my wolves and…”

“SAGE,” he roared.

I froze and turned to look at him. Nobody yelled at me and I was surprised that he didn’t drop dead from the deadly glare I was giving him. He just smirked again.

*Through Sage's Eyes*     “Luna? ... Excuse me, Sage?”     “Yes, Mark, what is it?” I replied when he pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned to face my gamma.      “Alpha Liam is headed up to the conference room. I linked Ben already and he’s on his way. Also, Alpha Elijah and his team should still be here at 6 pm.”     “Great, thank you. Please double check all of the documents we prepared for the meetings tomorrow, we can’t have any missing details or technical issues”      I picked up the papers Alpha Liam had sent to my office and started walking to the room, where I met up with my beta.      “Ben, we both know Alpha Liam’s reputation with money. Neither of us really wanted to pencil him in but he insisted on visiting so let’s just get this over with.” I put my personal distaste for his son Ian aside, personal feelings didn’t mix with business.      “Yeah Sage, I know,” he replied as he pulled a chair out for me and took a seat to my right. Mark wasn’t joining us for this meeting because of all the work needed for tomorrow.       We both stood up when Alpha Liam and his beta walked in and shook their hands.      “Luna Sage, this is my beta Mike. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said, taking a seat across from me while Mike sat across from Ben. I didn’t like the way Mike looked my body up and down, slow enough to ensure that I noticed, but I was used to that so I ignored it. I wasn’t about to stop wearing my beloved business suits and dresses just to avoid the occasional unwanted eye. At least the alpha kept his eyes on my face.      “It’s nice to meet you both, this is my beta, Ben. I understand you have a long journey back so let’s get down to business. You said you wanted to discuss merging our shipping companies.”      “Yes Luna, I do. I see you have the proposal I had sent to you but I’ll just quickly cover my ideas. We both have shipping companies that focus on transport to different regions of the country but I believe if we combine them we can…”      I listened as he ran through his proposal using the biggest and fanciest words he could think of. I’m sure he was smart, but I also had a suspicion this was an attempt to impress me or make me feel inferior. Not many people knew I had a lot of education under my belt. That’s the way I liked it. I usually came out on top in business deals when others underestimated me.      Ben did a good job, nodding and asking appropriate questions at the right spots even though I could tell he didn’t care. Usually this was Mark’s job, Ben preferred a fight over a meeting. He would have made a good alpha, just not as good as me.     Liam’s proposal covered most of the details considered during a horizontal merger. Clearly he did some research and wanted to give me every reason to think this may be a good idea. Too bad it would never work.      “... as you can see Luna, it would be in both of our best interests to combine these companies,” he finished off with a toothy smile.      I didn’t respond right away. Ben knew it was mostly because I liked to think of what I’m about to say before I say it. I had learned to be deliberate with my words and actions in my years as luna and my team had grown to respect these small silences. But I also did it sometimes to unnerve people, so when I looked at Ben he had a small smirk on his face.      “Alpha Liam, thank you so much for all of the research and time you have put into this. It makes business meetings so much more efficient. As you know, our shipping company makes up a small fraction of the business my team oversees. And I know that your shipping company is a large portion of what you oversee and is about to declare bankruptcy, so I respect your effort and drive to merge with mine...” I finally said, watching his face fall a bit.      “That is irrelevant to the proposal…” he interrupted.      “I’m still speaking,” I interrupted back. “I do agree with you, that merging with you would give Eve Shipping the ability to move into the Southwest region of the country and I know your pack works hard, but I don’t actually need this merger.”     At this point I stood up, picked up the documents in front of me and walked over to the door, holding it open for them.     “I am willing to consider it, if you send me a proposal that doesn’t completely bend over and f**k my company with shareholder value and insurance costs. Also, as a company run by a werewolf pack, I’d expect to see an environmental impact report on yours,” I said coldly. I did not like his attempt to take advantage of me. A merger always included an alliance but my pack was not in a position where it needed either with the Red Sand pack. “Please have someone send that over if you still want to do business. Now excuse us, Ben and I have other matters to attend to. I hope you have a safe journey back home.”      I knew Alpha Liam was pissed, but there was really nothing he could do. We were technically the same rank so I could speak to him however I wanted and any semi-decent businessman could have seen that it was a poorly designed deal.      “b***h,” I heard him mutter under his breath. Ben paused for a fraction of a second, thinking of turning around. But he saw no reaction from me so he followed. He knew I didn’t need it, but he had a protective streak in him.      Ben and I walked back to my office for my mid-day meeting with him and Mark. The three of us had a weekly meeting to discuss everything from pending business deals to pack gossip. Since Ben was in charge of the fighters and training and Mark was in charge of all of the staff within the pack companies, they usually heard some things I missed out on.      Becoming the Luna without an alpha at the age of 18 didn’t allow for much free time and even now, three years later, this was usually the most socializing I did in a day.      Ben, a year older than me, loved going to clubs and bars and having a good pool day. He was very handsome with light brown eyes, short dark hair, strong features and a 6 foot 3 inch athletic build. He hadn’t found his mate yet and usually had a new flavor of the week wandering in and out of his bedroom. He was a great beta, staying on top of the rotating patrol schedules and their training as well as training the rest of the pack. We grew up together and were friends then, but we both came into our positions at the same time and had become best friends over the last couple of years.      Mark was 24 and had moved up to his gamma position about one year ago when he married his mate Isabelle and his father decided to retire. I had also grown up with him and he fit right in to the way Ben and I liked to run our pack and companies. He was more of a home-body than Ben but still enjoyed a good time out every so often. His biggest passion was soccer and was often trying to start a match on the field behind the pack house when he wasn’t at one of the offices or in meetings.      In a large human company, his responsibilities would place him in the number two position, but this was first and foremost a werewolf pack. Fighting and defense was more important and that’s why my beta had those responsibilities. Mark and Ben usually had a little more free time than I did, but then again they weren’t the alpha. They were also men and didn’t have to spend their free time proving that they deserved their positions.      In most packs, alphas were technically the same rank and equal to their lunas, but the alpha still ran the businesses and oversaw battles and wars. In my opinion that wasn’t equal. Many wolves recognized the strength of women, but packs were still generally patriarchal communities.     As the only child of the previous alpha, I deserved this position, but it was almost unheard of for a single woman to be in charge of an entire pack and make stereotypically “alpha” decisions. There were usually conditions that put another man in the alpha position, but I found a way around those. I fought hard to earn this position, and after a few initial bumpy months, my pack respected me. Although young, my ranked team and I worked perfectly together and were quite successful. I had yet to find my mate and I hoped it would stay that way. I was more efficient this way. I didn’t need any weaknesses or another man trying to get above me.      Ben first filled us in on his weekend report of rogue sightings. In the past few months, groups of two or three rogues had been attempting to cross our borders every couple of days. They were always found immediately and those who didn’t run away were killed on the spot. Our patrol dealt with them easily, but it was still a nuisance. Apparently this past weekend there had only been one spotted wandering around the northernmost mountain on Saturday morning. He didn’t even see the guard who snuck up on him.      I mindlinked Isabelle and Timmy, a young omega working in the kitchen, as I listened to Mark recount a dispute he had to settle between two engineers in the solar plant. Apparently one was not happy because he felt the other was becoming too close with his mate, resulting in a scuffle in front of everyone.      “Why’d you stop it so early? He was fighting for his woman!” Ben said, making me roll my eyes.      “Yes Ben, punch-ups in front of the whole staff is a great sign of a well-run company. There’s also about one hundred humans working at that plant, the last thing we need is another accidental exposure.” They both laughed as Isabelle walked in and sat on Mark’s lap. They looked at each other with so much love that I internally scoffed.      “Hey Izzy, is everything ready for later?”      “Yep. The guest rooms are all prepared and equipped with extra towels and toiletries and Mrs. Kim has everything under control in the kitchen. She has dinner and dessert for tonight and breakfast and lunch for tomorrow specially planned for the guests,” she said as she ran her hands through Mark’s dark auburn hair.      “You’re amazing,” Mark cooed in her ear. Ben mimed a gagging motion while she looked at Mark and    plainly stated, “it’s my job.”     This is why I liked the girl. She obviously loved her mate, but since joining the pack two years ago she took her responsibilities very seriously. As head of all omegas, she was extremely organized, fair and very respectful of everyone. In turn, the omegas adored her and worked hard for the pack.      “Excuse us, we have something we need to do,” Mark said as he lightly tugged her sleek purple hair. He stood, picking her up on the way, and threw her over his shoulder giving her ass a light smack as he turned to leave.      If you just looked harder or cared we could find someone to do that to us! my wolf Jasmine said in my head.      I ignored her comment.     “Thank you Izzy!” I called after her as Mark opened the door and stepped out, letting Timmy in. He shut the door behind him, muffling the sounds of Izzy’s giggling.      “You asked for me Luna?” Timmy said uneasily, bowing his head in respect.      “Hi Timmy. First, please look at me when you speak.”      He looked directly at me, clearly nervous. I know in some packs lower level wolves aren’t supposed to look directly at the top ranks when addressing them, but I think that’s ridiculous. I refuse to converse with someone while they are looking at the floor and I want my omegas to feel respected.      “Thank you. So, Mrs. Kim told me you were new to working in the pack house kitchen and while obviously I can just mindlink anyone when I need something, I prefer to converse in person and I wanted to meet you and welcome you,” I said as I walked over to him and stuck out my hand. For such a small boy he had a firm handshake. “I know you’re all busy preparing for the dinner, but I would really appreciate it if you could have a bowl of whatever soup is available brought up to me.”     “Yes of course ma’am. It will be a few minutes.” He bowed his head again and scurried out of my office. I didn’t love being called ma’am, it made me feel old, but it was basically the equivalent of ‘sir’ and that’s what they’d say if I was a man so I let it slide.     “He looked like he was gonna s**t a brick,” Ben laughed. “What do you want soup for?”     “I feel like I’ve had butterflies in my stomach all f*****g day. It’s so annoying and I have no idea what it is.”     Something is coming. I don’t know if it’s good or bad but something is gonna happen.      Thanks Jas that’s super helpful, I replied sarcastically.      I walked over to my office couch that Ben was laying on and picked up his feet, sitting before placing them back over my lap.      “Maybe you’re pregnant!” he smirked, earning him a hard slap across the shins.     “Ha ha ha. We both know I don’t even have the time to practice getting pregnant,” I sighed as I laid my head back on the top of the couch and closed my eyes. After a retort from Jasmine about my, and therefor her, non-existant s*x life she quieted down. Ben said nothing since he knew chastising me about the way I lived my life would get nowhere.      We stayed like that on the couch for five minutes before I heard a knock at my door and smelled Mrs. Kim’s chicken and wild rice soup and smiled. She knew it was my favorite.      I lifted Ben’s feet and made my way to the door with Ben coming up behind me. I took the soup from Timmy and thanked him, noticing his effort to maintain eye contact with me this time. He even gave me a big smile.     “I’m gonna run to Kayla’s before dinner. I’ll see you later Sage,” Ben told me as he slipped past me into the hall.      “Who the f**k is Kayla? Nevermind, I don’t care. Dinner is at 7 and they’re arriving at 6. Don’t you dare be late!” I called after him.      I decided to eat in my room. I sat on my king-sized bed eating my soup and watching the news. There was nothing interesting happening in the human world that affected pack business so I switched it off and decided to take a quick nap before I had to get ready for tonight. The Cold Moon Pack was the largest pack in the Northeast and since my pack was in a similar terrain but in the mountain states of the country, we had similar business ventures and interests. The alpha was coming with his team to talk strategy, potential business mergers and hopefully broker an alliance. My pack was a little bigger than his but I hoped to come out of the meetings with some business in the east and a good relationship with Alpha Elijah.      My alarm went off after forty five minutes and I made my way into my adjoining bathroom. I spent a little extra time in my rain shower, shaving every inch of my body and putting a conditioning mask in my hair. I stepped out and wrapped my towel around me before going to the sink and rubbing lotion on my legs, arms and chest. I dried my long blonde hair so that it was relatively straight. After putting on a little bit of dark eye shadow, black eyeliner, mascara and neutral colored lipstick, I tried to put my hair into a deliberately messy fishtail braid. After my third try I gave up and linked Izzy to see if she could come help me.      While I waited for her I went to my walk-in closet and pulled out the blood red dress I wanted to wear. I picked out a lacy red bra and thong too. Red made me feel powerful and I needed to kick off the next twenty-four hours with all of the power and confidence I could get.      Izzy came in while I was still in my underwear and pulled me to the bathroom so I could sit on the edge of my tub in front of the large mirror. She and I had become kind of close over the last few months, especially since I was usually surrounded by men. She was originally from a different pack and was always eager to get close to people in mine. Her hair was purple now, but it often changed color as she loved experimenting with beauty products and styles. That was not my forte so she helped me when I needed it. She was already dressed for tonight in a tight black body-con dress. It was sleeveless but had a halter neck and went down to the top of her knees so it was still appropriate for a business dinner.      Who was I kidding? We were werewolves, she could have been wearing the skimpiest dress she could find and it would still be appropriate. But as I said, she took her position very seriously. Her hair was slicked back into a high, straight ponytail and her cat-eye was perfectly done.     “What would you do without me Sage?” she asked as she finished the look by pulling out a few random strands to frame my face and complete the ‘messy’ look.      “Look like s**t, that’s for sure,” I said as I stood up and smiled before twirling in front of the mirror. “It’s perfect, thank you. Can you wait one sec to zip me up?”     “So I hear Alpha Elijah is bringing his entire team?” she asked as I stepped into my dress.     “Yeah, I think he wants us to eventually be sister packs so he wanted everyone ranked to meet. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.” I put my arms through the sleeves and spun so that she could zip up the back.      “I hope they have some younger team members and it isn’t just a group of old stuffy men!”     “Ugh, me too. Did you use the sommelier for tonight or the mixologist?”     “Girl, both! This is a big deal. I also have everything set up to potentially have a small party or at least celebratory drinks,” she said while looking at me hopefully. She knew I was fine with whatever she set up, but she was hopeful that I’d join them.      “Amazing, that’s perfect. And let’s see how the dinner goes before we move to anything else.”     “I’m gonna get you hammered and dancing on a table one day Sage, just you wait,” she warned as she went to my bedroom door. “I’m gonna go check on everything with Mrs. Kim one last time and I’ll meet you at the front at 6.”     When she was gone I put on my black Louboutins and stood in front of my full length mirror. The dress had short sleeves and a neckline that hugged my collar bone until it plunged in the middle, ending at the bottom of my cleavage. It fit my body perfectly, highlighting the curve of my hips and my ass, ending a little above my knees. It made me look hot, in my opinion, without being too sexy.      I spoke three languages, went to business school and was about to start classes for another degree, but that didn’t prevent me from using my looks to help me out a bit. Use what you got, right?      Damn girl we look good.      Is this too much do you think?     No, the Cold Moon men will be kissing your feet!      Wow, Jas, super realistic expectations, I responded, rolling my eyes.      I quickly put on my mother’s diamond bracelet my dad gave me on my sixteenth birthday and put small diamond drop earrings in before making my way to the front of the house to greet my guests. I walked out onto the front steps and waited, watching the parade of black SUVs make their way down the drive. Mark and Izzy were already standing to my back left and I turned to give Ben some disapproving glares as he ran and fell into place behind my right side.      The cars stopped side by side in front of the house and the guards stepped out, some standing in front of the cars while the rest opened the passenger doors. Alpha Elijah looked to be about forty-five and was relatively handsome, with salt and pepper hair and a short salt-and pepper beard. He was about my height since I had heels on and was flanked by a tall blonde man and an extremely handsome black man. The Alpha stood alone while the other two had women standing very close to them, clearly wives or mates.      “Luna Sage, it is an absolute honor to meet you,” he smiled as he shook my hand. He started off with a few points in my book for looking at me first and keeping his gaze up. “This is my beta Derek and his wife Catherine,” he motioned to the blonde man and a beautiful woman with her hair in a ballerina bun and an emerald green dress that I desperately wanted. I’d have to ask her where she got it. “And this,” Alpha Elijah continued, “is my gamma Jordan and his wife Tanya.” Their dark skin was flawless and were both wearing high fashion suits. I felt slightly nervous for a reason I couldn’t pinpoint. But as luna I’ve learned to control every emotion that runs through me, so I calmly shook everyone’s hand before introducing my team.      “It’s such a pleasure to meet you Alpha Elijah and all of you. This is my beta, Ben,” I paused for handshakes, “and this is my gamma Mark and his wife Isabelle. My head of security, Ryan, will be out shortly to assist your guards. Any bags you have can be given to my staff and will be taken up to your rooms,” I said as I motioned to the row of omegas standing off to the side waiting for a task. They immediately walked over to the cars and worked with the guards to collect all the bags.      I led everyone inside to the foyer and after many compliments on the house and interior decorating I had Stella take everyone’s drink order and led the party into the lounge.      “I am very sorry,” Alpha Elijah said as we all sat down on a couch or chair. “My daughter is very pregnant and about a week away from her due date so my Luna decided to stay home with her.”      “Oh Goddess of course. I wish her a safe and smooth delivery. And congratulations!” I could sense his excitement at the idea of a new grandchild. “You’ll excuse me, but I assumed you would be traveling in a larger group?”     “Yes we are! I almost forgot about them,” he laughed. “We each brought our eldest son, but their car got a flat tire a few miles outside of your border. They should be here momentarily.”     A few omegas appeared at that time, respectfully bowing their heads and addressing the guests with their proper title while serving their drinks. I took a sip of my perfectly made old fashioned. The mixologist had used our own whiskey.      I heard someone open the front door to let people in and the butterflies in my stomach went wild. As the group of footsteps approached the lounge I got hit with a wave of the most amazing smell I’d ever experienced. Some kind of mix of chocolate and citrus. Smooth and comforting and tangy and energizing all at the same time. Jasmine howled in my head. Before I could determine what it was, I was manhandled off my chair and pressed against the wall, my glass shattering on the floor.      “What the fu-” was all I got out before I noticed the piercing silver eyes centimeters from my face.      “MINE.”     s**t. s**t. s**t. s**t.
