“Why are you staring at me?” I asked him.

“Oh, sorry I umm, I’m just not used to women being so strong around this mafia business. They usually faint or cry.”

I let out a chuckle “I’ve never met anyone quite like you Andrea, I think you’re going to be a great Queen.” I looked at him taken a back by his answer, maybe I was cut out for this after all. I gave him a soft smile in return for his compliment. I was generally speaking a fairly awkward person, I was used to being invisible and now I feel like a spotlights just been shone on my life. I didn’t take compliments well normally. But I have to admit I was feeling more confident than usual. My thoughts were interrupted by the cabin crew, letting us know we were departing soon. I looked up at the air hostess realising it was someone different from earlier, I guess she clocked out. We fastened our seatbelts as instructed and the plane took off, I had just began to flick through the movies again when I heard a “click” next to my head.

“Don’t move.” Said the air hostess as she held the cold hun to my temple, I looked up at Rory who’s eyes were wide. The rest of the crew entered from behind her all holding guns up to us. It was 8 vs 2 and they were armed.

“What is it you want? Money?” I asked the hostess looking at her from under my lashes. Although her face was stern her hand was shaking, telling me she was afraid.

Wear something black
1.  ‘Wear something Black’ It’s been two weeks.  Two weeks since my father, Antonio de Luca was assassinated. Sorry not assassinated, kidnapped and tortured is the truth. My family is kind of f****d up –was- kind of f****d up, my dad was the don of NYC biggest Italian mafia and he was the best daddy a girl could ask for. He kept me out of everything as much as he could, but I wasn’t stupid, I knew what was going on.  ‘ANDY, CARS HERE HURRY UP’ yelled the voices of my identical twin brothers, pulling me out of my trance, I gave myself one more look in the mirror. My long medium brown hair was pulled tightly into a ballerina bun at the top of my head, my eyes were puffy from crying but otherwise my face looked okay. My body was athletic, so I wore a 1950’s inspired black dress to give me some sort of figure but I still looked like my adolescent self. I attached my fascinator and pulled over the netted veil to conceal my face. Every single mafia leader in the country was going to be there, and my uncle Jack thought it would be a good idea to conceal my identity so I would not be recognised or possibly kidnapped for leverage. To any other 14-year-old girl, these seemed like horrific things to think about, but it was my regular life. My parents did a fairly good job of keeping my identity a secret so far, nobody ever seeing my face or knowing my name, I was invisible, and I liked it. Daddy would call me his ultimate secret weapon whenever I complained about wearing a face covering or unable to attend all the fancy parties my brothers were allowed to go to.  ‘It’s for the best Princess, we can't risk the royal families most precious jewel to be stolen, now can we?’ said my dad as he looked down at my small 7-year-old self and gave me a playful wink before kissing my forehead. ‘But daddy I hate being left here alone, I have nobody to play with.’ I protested as he donned his Armani suit jacket, that was when my mother appeared. She was dressed in a floor length gold sequin gown that had a plunging neckline and hugged her curves beautifully. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a fancy up doo, she gave me a warm smile as she said ‘One day we will reveal you to the world, but not tonight’ she pecked me on the cheek as I scowled at her.    I exited my room and made my way to the top of the stairs, halfway down I saw my identical twin brothers were fixing each other's ties at the bottom. As my feet began to make noise, they both turned, Donovan gave me a smirk while Salvatore gave me a sympathetic smile. Out of the two I had always been closer with Salvatore; he was much kinder natured than Donovan. Donovan would kill any pet mother and father gifted me, he was sadistic and enjoyed watching me cry as I found my decapitated bunny in my sheets. Salvatore was much more like your regular big brother; he was extremely protective and often took time out of his day to train with me in our back yard, he was the one who hugged me and told me everything was going to be okay when mom got shipped off to crazy town. I knew that with father's death this meant that the twins would take over, the thought of Donovan overseeing those soldiers scared me. The twins were dressed in matching black suits, the only way to tell them apart was their hair. Although both blonde, Donovan's was slicked back and parted on the right side whereas Salvatore’s was parted on the left. Salvatore also had a freckle above his right eyebrow which made him easy to distinguish against his brother whenever they decided to ‘switch’ for the day. It used to drive mom and dad nuts! I smirked to myself at the memory of my mischievous brothers but tears soon started to fall freely from my dark brown eyes.  I walked slowly out of my home. ‘One foot in front of the other’ I told myself. I looked up through my veil and saw our front street lined with men and women dressed in their finest attire. I could feel looks of curiosity burning through my veil, which made me incredibly uncomfortable. I just wanted to run back inside the house and shield myself away. Without warning I felt my brothers surround me either side, I looked up at them as they both held out their arms in sync. Immediately I wrapped my arms around theirs and descended the marble steps, trying not to trip I held my head high. ‘You’re a De Luca princess, you bow your head to nobody’ I heard my father’s voice echo in my head. My eyes then immediately fell on the horse and carriage in front of me which held my father’s coffin. The horses were beautiful, adorned with black feather head dresses which complimented their white dark brown skin. The whole thing was grotesquely extravagant, but we of course had to send a message to the other leaders. That was one part of being mafia, you had to always put on the best show. It was an underground industry driven by theatrics and fear, without the two nobody would take you seriously. We took our places behind the carriage and the procession started. We walked slowly throughout the streets making our way to the cemetery ‘Bet your glad you wore flats now’ I looked up at Salvatore who was smirking down at me. ‘Extremely’ was all i could manage to say without breaking down into hysterical sobs. ‘It's going to be okay you know, were gunna take good care of you.' I turned to my left surprised to see the statemen had come from Donovan. I nodded my head not quite knowing what to say, it was the first time he had even acknowledged my existence in months. We walked in unison, behind the carriage for what seemed like miles; we finally reached our destination and with a sigh of relief I sat down next to the freshly dug grave.   The service was almost 2 hours long, I sat and politely listened to the speeches made by my father’s capo's and other business partners. Salvatore also gave a short speech, which if you had read between the lines was a direct warning to other rival mafias not to do anything stupid. When we got back to the house, i took myself up to my room and locked the door removing the veil finally able to breathe. I lay down on my bed feeling numb, and then i let the sadness engulf me. I felt like I was drowning, the heaviness on my chest growing with each passing minute as I slowly realised that I was now entirely alone in this dangerous world.
