A New Life

I wake up to Isabelle my cat affectionately pawing my face. I look at my phone, it’s 3AM. I had fallen asleep in my favorite place, in the hammock, under the stars, listening to music with my headphones on.  “C’mon Isabelle, let’s go to bed” I say, as I’m walking into the house.  I grabbed a glass of water and headed down the hall to my room. But then I noticed my parents door is open, which is odd, they always sleep with it shut. As I reach in for the door handle, I see my dad lying on the floor next to the bed. My mom is laying in the bed face down. I stand there in shock, it’s silent, I hear absolutely nothing. I walk slowly up to my dad and I feel something wet under my feet. It was blood, a lot of blood, surrounding my dad. I walk quietly to my mom and whisper “Mom, please wake up.” Nothing. So I put my hands on her to move her and realize she’s bleeding as well.  I start panicking, “this isn’t real, wake up!” I tell myself.  Then I hear something from the kitchen. I sneak down the hall to my bedroom and quietly open my closet door. I went in and closed it behind me, I sit, and listen. I haven’t heard any other sounds, so I pick up my phone and dial 911.  “911 what’s your emergency?” I sit there trying to form words as the lady on the other end keeps repeating herself. I finally utter words I’d never thought I’d say in a million years. “My parents are dead, they’ve been murdered, help.”  The lady starts to talk again and nothing she says I can take in. All I can hear is my voice on repeat “my parents are dead, they’ve been murdered.” Over and over like a broken record. I sit there replaying everything in my head, finding my dad, begging my mom to wake up. Then the door opens and there is a bright light in my face. I squint to see, it’s the police and I break out in tears because I no longer have to be silent and hide.
