Chapter 1. First Day
It’s Monday morning, room 302 goes quiet as Mr. Johnson opens his classroom door and walks in, followed by a new student. “Who is she?” some whisper while others stare with some anticipation at a slender, young 17-year-old girl, with long wavy brown hair and light green eyes standing in front of them. “Morning everyone, this is Miss. Carter, she will be joining you, please introduce yourself to class” Mr. Johnson said while clearing his thought and opening his briefcase. It feels like her heart falls right into her shoes, she doesn’t like this, “Hum, morning, I’m Clarise Carter, I moved from a small sunny town outside the city called Norbury, to come and live with my aunt…” she said while trying to concentrate on a spot on the wall the end of the classroom. She looks over at Mr. Johnson “Ahem! Alright”. He scans the room and sees an open spot, “You can take a seat in front of Mr. James over there” he points to the open spot. James lifts his one hand up and waves her over, he is a scrawny boy with lengthy dark blond hair, his eyes look so big through his black-rimmed glasses she noticed as she comes closer. She smiles at him and takes her seat. During the break, she sits alone while having a delicious ham sandwich. She feels unease someone is looking at her and when she looks around she sees a boy sitting at one of the tables looking over at her, he is well built, with short brown hair it almost looks like a military cut hairstyle to her. “That’s Tyler, Tyler Canmore!” comes a voice from behind her, she looks to her right as a girl with bouncy bop blond hair, light blue-grey eyes, with an athletic build body, pulls out a chair and comes sitting down next to her, “Hi I’m Willow!” she stretches out her hand for a handshake. “He is a loner and a really mysterious, no one really knows anything about him he usually keeps to himself, he also transferred in, at the beginning of this year” Willow adds on while she points with her head and eyebrows over to him smiling. “So what brings you to the big city?” she asks while ripping apart the brown paper bag that holds her lunch. “M-my, mom, passed away, so I had to come and live with my aunt” Clarise replies while bowing her head. “Oh no, I’m, so sorry!” replies Willow looking over at Clarise not knowing what else to say and feeling a bit awkward. Clarise notices that Willow's whole mood dropped, and didn't want that, "She was my best friend and confidant, I was lucky to have had a mother like her," she says trying to be brave in front of Willow. "Wel if you want to talk about her, you can count on me," she says putting her hand on Clarise's shoulder with a comforting smile on her face. The two of them sit there quietly for a couple of minutes, eating their lunch. When they look up again they see Tyler, looking over at Clarise one last time and smiling before disappearing down one of the hallways just before the bell rings. The rest of the day goes by quiet and uneventfully. That afternoon she walks home after school, her hair swaying in a cold city wind, her dreamy eyes staring in front of her but not really seeing where she walks as she is in deep thought, she grabs and clenches her new navy blue school jacket tighter around her skinny waist to try and block the cold from seeping in. “Clarise this is your life now,” she says softly to herself, as she looks up, she can barely see the blue sky above her, as the concrete giants that towers around her block her line of sight, she never knew she would miss the sun on her skin so much, I used to wish for a cloud to move in front of the sun for a bit of shade, but now, now I wish for the sun to bless my skin with its warm rays she thinks to herself. She used to only visit her aunt in the city maybe once or twice a year, she never really noticed all the city noise and the cold, maybe because she is alone now, maybe it was the comforting voice of her mother that blocked out all the noise that’s almost overwhelming. Mom, I miss you so much! she thinks… Suddenly she feels something crack and grinds undertreat her school shoe, she takes her foot away slowly “oh what is this!” she says softly, there in front of her on the sidewalk lies a pendant, she bends over and picks it up, on the front side is the head of a deer with big silver antlers that touches the rim of pendant and at the bottom, there are some words inscribed that she can’t make out clearly because dirt that has filled the spaces in the words, it has a long thin solid woven silver chain that is not broken. She quickly puts it in the pocket of her jacket, as she suddenly hears her name called out, “Clarice, Clarice!” As she turns around she froze solid, it can’t be she thought to herself, as a curvy lady dressed in a white long-sleeved chef jacket with a dark reddish apron and black pants with a chef’s hat on her head with curly reddish-brown hair that leaks through the side of her chef’s hat or toque as her mom used to call it with emphasis on the “ue!” and she to say the word would open her eyes real big and lift her eyebrows real high, as the lady walks closer she realizes and remembers it's her aunt for a moment she thought she saw her mom, I still can't believe she is gone she thinks to herself, “how am I going to make it through this" she whispers softly and full of despair to herself, especially with the likeliness between her aunt and her mom. "Why don't you come for a piece of pie at the bakery before you go home?" Aunt Belle asks with a smile on her face as she gasps for air "and then you can tell me all about your first day..., oh wow haven't you heard me calling you? I have been running almost two blocks to try and catch up to you?” She says wiping her hand over her forehead, “I’m not as young as I used to" Aunt Belle says with a laugh, Clarice turns around and walks with her aunt to her aunt's bakery, as she gets closer she starts to smell the delicious aroma of freshly baked pastries and bread that floats in the air.
