Nightmares
"The bed's getting cold and you're not here..." -Selena Gomez, The Heart Wants What It Wants Sophia couldn't sleep.  She never could these days and it sucked majorly.  Every minute of every night, she was haunted by the face of her mate. He and the blonde, naked, in bed together...Sophia would then wake up in more pain than when she went to bed.  After giving up sleep entirely she walked the entire palace to restless to do anything else. Her mind letting her walk but still torturing her every step with thoughts of her mate. Was he looking for her? Was he with that she-wolf or some other girl? Did he want Sophia or someone else? She was too afraid to find him for answers.  So she instead hid.  After running from him that day in Valorie's pub, Sophia had been content in spending her last remaining weeks of her summer break hiding in her friend's castle. Amaya had of course been eager to let her stay while Cole worried she was running from the inevitable.  But Sophia didn't really care, she wasn't ready for the rejection yet. Her heart was strong enough considering all the damage it had, already taken.  Walking into the garden, Sophia hummed as she put a flower behind her ear.  Sitting on a bench, Sophia reached under her and held up the tiny little wooden box. She knew Ambrose liked to still get stoned here and there, he said it took his mind off things. Sophia could desperately use a means to escape.  Grabbing one of the already rolled joints, Sophia lit it and sat back in the bench as the narcotic took effect slowly but surely. When Sophia could think and actually breathe, she thanked whatever god having mercy on her and enjoyed the weed flowing through her system.  As Sophia smoked and enjoyed the noise dying down in her head, Ambrose suddenly appeared and laughed. "Well, I never took you for a smoker." Sophia looked down ashamed, "I'm sorry, I would have asked but-."  Ambrose waved the young girl off as he put out the minuscule little piece of a joint she had left and lit another. "I know you're going through a rough time Sophia, I'd never kick you while you're down."  Sophia looked down at her hands and asked, "Ambrose...what would you have done? If Fleur rejected your advances?"  Ambrose shook his head in thought, "When I met Fleur I was at the time in my life where I felt less than great about myself. I had just been in a near-death experience and I realized everything I wanted, I almost didn't get the chance to have. But the feeling of loneliness, emptiness, complete and utter isolation doesn't just disappear for anyone."  Ambrose blew a smoke trail from his mouth and passed as he told her, "It takes the right kind of woman, or man to love someone broken."  Sophia looked at Ambrose and whispered, "I've accepted a long time ago I was broken and couldn't be fixed. No amount of friends or even a mate can fix what's broken in me. But now I have a mate who might just break me farther. I don't know if I can survive." Ambrose smiled a little as he looked at the young woman he had watched grow for the past five years, "Sophia you can, I know you can because you are a strong woman. Never let a man too foolish to miss out on this define you."  Sophia blew smoke out of her nose like a dragon as she huffed, "I like the idea of being strong Ambrose, I do. But..." Sophia exhaled sadly, "It's stupid."  Ambrose looked at her as she passed, "No it's not, tell me."  Sophia sighed and admitted, "I watch my mom be strong. After she left my dad, she was strong every minute, of every day trying to keep s**t together. I loved her in those days because I knew she wasn't entirely happy either. I just...I don't want to HAVE to be strong all the time.  I'd rather let someone else share the burden."  Ambrose coughed and hesitantly said, "Just because this wolf is your true mate, doesn't mean you can't choose someone else once you two...severe the connection. Sophia winced before nodding, "I know. And while it would suck to go through I know it's an option." Sophia exhaled and admitted, "It just sucks."  Ambrose squeezed Sophia's knee as he stood and gave her the remainder of his joint before telling her, "It does, and I'm sorry Sophia. But don't let this define you. You're so much more than some guy. You're a young, beautiful, powerful witch. If he isn't beside himself looking for you, then he doesn't deserve you."  Sophia smiled and bid Ambrose a good night and watched him shuffle out in his hippy robe and sandals.  Stoned and even more confused about what she wanted, Sophia went up to her room and sat in her bed.  She wrote in her journal into the early morning and managed to get a couple of minutes of sleep. "You're going to hell if you don't stop! You're going to become a demon, just like your mother!"  But of course, the nightmares of either her rejection from her mate or her biological father seemed to be on a loop. By the time breakfast was ready and she had joined everyone at the table Sophia was feening for coffee and something sweet. Amaya looked at her concerned and asked, "Are you okay love? It looks like you haven't been sleeping. Still."  Sophia sighed, "I haven't. It's nothing but a waste of time to try and sleep these days."  Amaya frowned and told her, "I'll make you a tonic. It'll be more like a coma but you'll still get rest." Sophia thanked her and looked up when her mother walked in with Christopher. Smiling at her mother and stepfather, Sophia greeted them and both did the same back happily.  Christopher looked at his stepdaughter in concern and asked, "You okay baby doll? You look peaky." Lucy frowned and huffed, "It's that mate of her's fault. I blame him for this." Sophia looked down sheepishly but still jumped to defend her other half, "No I ran away from him like a spineless little girl. I had no clue what he wanted, I just assumed the worst."  Lucy still frowning buttered her biscuit, "Doesn't matter. He shouldn't have been taking his sweet time in claiming you as his." Laughing Amaya turned to look at Lucy, "Should he have jumped her in the pub?"  Lucy scowled at Amaya, "No! And who's side are you on?" Amaya c****d an eyebrow, "Side? There has yet to be a fight darling. All we know is he made an error in judgment."  Huffing Lucy sneered, "And that so-called man made my baby feel rejected that's good enough for me not to like him."  Wanting to get off this subject desperately Sophia scrambled for a different topic. Seeing her in need of a lifeline, Christopher asked loudly, "So Sophia, you ready for your final year at Sphynx Prep?"  Sophia smiled widely and nodded at her stepfather eagerly, "Yeah I mean, it's the year where I can do whatever I want. I'm a freaking Gemini now!"  In her school, Sphynx Prep, the students were all put into classes by age.  Topaz- ages twelve through fourteen.  Diamond- ages fifteen through seventeen.  Gemini- ages eighteen.  Gemini's were basically seniors, and they were on a less tight leash and bound to have more fun than ever before.  Amaya giggled as she looked at Sophia, "Oh yeah you're bound to get into mischief, especially with Topaz right there with you." Sophia grinned widely, "Oh you know it." Lucy coughed and had to put her mom's face on, "Now Sophia I want you to have fun but remember our deal. No grades, no fun. Yeah?"  Sophia teased her mother sleepily, "Yes warden."  Lucy gave her daughter a concerned look and whispered, "Let's go upstairs sweetie, I'll put you to bed with one of my sleeping spells. It'll keep you from dreaming."  Sophia left out with her mother, and like she was five again was tucked into bed and kissed softly on the forehead. "Mom?" Sophia whispered as she started to go under.  Lucy stroked her daughter's hair as she whispered, "Yeah?"  Sophia sniffled and asked, "Do you think he would love me?" Lucy smiled as she nodded, "If he doesn't have a heart. No one can be around you and not love you, sweetie."  Sophia drifted into a dreamless sleep hoping like hell that was true.
