PROLOGUE
Clarion Keep      Darwin looked up at the parents of the child in his arms. They glowed with pride and joy. He smiled at them, as he looked back down at the child. The baby cooed at him, her heart shaped lips forming an O, and a smile. What a happy little girl.      “A beautiful daughter, congratulations.” Darwin said to the happy couple. The Baroness’ smile grew bigger.      “Thank you my lord.” She said.      “I bless her with a caring and fair heart. She will be a strong willed girl, so beware Cecil, she may be your match.” He said, looking up at his friend. “She will make a great successor as many will love her.”      “I thank you my friend, for your blessing.” The Baron said, Darwin held up his hand to stop him.      “I also bestow a gift upon your daughter, for I fear that her life will not be an easy one. I give her the gift of our protection. She will be needing it in her life, for she is going to run into an obstacle that will test her strength and will, and she won’t be able to defeat it alone.” Darwin predicted, as he ran his thumb over the baby’s forehead, a blue light transferred from him to the baby. She giggled and closed her eyes at the brightness. When the light was gone, she opened her eyes again, her brown eyes staring up into his. Yes, this child was a fighter, and intelligent. Darwin smiled down at her.      “You are most gracious my lord.” The Baron said, now nervous. “But why would you say such a thing. She has her mother and I to protect her. Truly, you aren’t saying…” He broke off.      “I am not suggesting anything my lord. I have seen into your daughter’s future, you will be amazing parents. But, as she grows older, you will not be there to protect her all the time, there will be trials that she must go through and you won’t be there to help her. We will be there though, and that is what she will need. Don’t fear my lord. She will live long and will prosper, and Clarion will live on.” Darwin reassured his friend. He kept to himself the trials that Clarion itself would go through itself. He knew his friend’s worries, and he didn’t want him to fret over what was coming. He couldn’t protect Clarion itself, or the Baron and Baroness, but he can protect the child.      Cecil nodded and took his wife’s hand, Darwin looked upon the woman, she was rather pale. Darwin knew that she had struggled with the child birth, and was obviously still recovering. Her hair was done up in an intricate design consisting of several large braids and intricately woven together. Her velvet, dark blue gown hung off of her frame. He didn’t miss the fact that she leaned on her husband to remain standing. She was weaker than he thought from the birth.      “My lady, let us sit down.” He suggested, not wanting to point out what he was seeing to save her from embarrassment. He knew how these humans worked, a woman struggled to be their counterparts equal, and seen as naturally weak they had the odds stacked against them. She looked grateful to him as they moved towards the head table, where a servant had placed a pitcher and a platter of pastries for nourishment.      “I do wish your men had accompanied you, they are welcome into the keep.” Cecil said, as the servant poured everyone a mug of mead. He nodded his thanks to the servant once she was done, and she slipped away silently.      “They are not accustomed to the walls of a fortress such as this, they prefer to wander the village until I have concluded my business here.” Darwin said.      “Will you be staying with us long? We are preparing a banquet for you visit to honor you.” Oceana asked, hopeful. Darwin smiled at her, her heart was true and Cecil couldn’t have found himself a better wife. He had been sad when she left their Mountains to be with a human man, but he didn't fault her for wanting to be with her own kind. Oceana and Cecil's love was so pure he had to let go of the human he had raised.  He took her hand in his own, and a yellow light passed between them, she sighed contently and a little color returned to her cheeks.      “My dear, of course, we will stay for your banquet, and then we must head home. The men are anxious here, and uncomfortable. But we had heard that you had given birth, and naturally I would want to meet my granddaughter, and see how you are doing in your recovery.” Darwin accepted the invitation. She beamed at the news.      “I would love to see Drake and Kargeth again.” Oceana said, longing in her voice. Darwin chuckled, she had grown up with those two, and he knew that the two men were excited to see her again as well. They were very close and acted like siblings. They were very protective of her, and hadn’t taken her leaving lightly. They had not taken her marrying Cecil well either, which was why they were in the village and not here to meet the baby. Darwin was glad though, for he didn’t want the men to see Oceana’s condition, it would have angered them. He didn’t want Cecil killed in front of her. With the healing light he had given her, by tonight's banquet she will have recovered fully, and all traces of the birthing would be gone. While he had let Oceana go with his blessing, those two still hated Cecil and wanted her to come home. They did not trust a mere human male to protect their adopted sister from the dangers of the world outside their mountains. Her hut still sat in the middle of the valley ready for her to come back.      “They will be here tonight. Then we must leave in the morning.” Darwin said. Oceana nodded with a smile.      "I can't wait." She said, sighing contently. Nestling her baby against her, as the child fell asleep. She waved off the wet nurse who had come to collect the child, clutching her. "She's okay where she is Martha." Darwin watched Oceana as she watched her daughter sleep.      "We have a request, my lord." Oceana said looking back up at him. Darwin hid the smile, he knew her request, and he had wondered what had taken so long for her to ask.      "Of course, my child, what is it?" He asked.      "We would ask that you be her guardian, if anything should happen if us, we want her with someone who can protect her. I know you have already bestowed the gift of your protection, but we need her to be able to go somewhere that is safe and where she is welcome." Oceana said. Darwin smiled and bowed his head to her.     "Of course I would be honored to be her guardian." Darwin accepted, "now we truly have a reason to celebrate." He said, and Oceana laughed. He was happy to see the orphan he had taken in so happy in her new life. He couldn't have asked for anything better for her.      He looked down at the babe sleeping in her arms. He prayed that her daughter would get the same happy ending, and that it would last longer than his adopted daughters will.
