Chapter 1.
"Hurry up Chris, the bus will soon be here" I called out for my brother who still thinks he has all the time in the world to dress slowly "I'm off, see ya and take care" he hastily hugged and pecked my cheeks before running out to the bus station. I stayed by the window and watched until he was out of sight before continuing with my chores. I cleaned the used dirtied plates and hastily made mom breakfast. I got dressed and ready to start my day... Like every other morning for the past three months, I head over to the hospital It was almost 6 am when I got to my destination "Good morning Linda" I smiled at a nurse who stood at the reception area. "Good morning to you too sweetheart. How was your night?" As the saying goes, you can't help but feel some emotions towards the people you see daily. With the staff here, what I feel most is an appreciation for taking care of her My mom was diagnosed with bowel cancer six months ago, since then, we struggled to buy her medications but life had a different plan, she had collapsed one day and she has been here ever since. Mom got slimmer and tired of being here in the hospital but we all have no choice, Chris and I still need her in our lives and we can't ever let go. We decided to fight for her life. I had to put on auction some of our valuables and sold our home. She has no idea we live in a two-bedroom in a place people referred to as a slum. Chris and I made that decision since it was for the best! "My night went quite well. How is she doing?" Linda knew the 'she' I was referring to since I always asked the same question. Mom would never tell me how she is truly doing for me not to worry but I have a right to know! "Truthfully, I think she will be needing the operation. That's my opinion though because her condition is far too gone for drugs to work" she noticed the worry on my face and moved over to pull me into a hug. I couldn't help it then and broke down in silent sobs. They were silent but my heart hurts so much, my head tried to think fast of places where I will be able to get funds from for her operation which will cost almost a million. What do I do God?! I questioned him in my heart. I prayed, hoped, and relied on him to save my mom but still, I feel like he abandoned me already "Shhhhh, stop sweetheart. Like I said it was just my own opinion. You don't have to cry, the doctor might have another opinion OK" Linda tried consoling me. I knew mom was still sick, yesterday when I saw her, I could only see a shadow of herself, the woman who once stood strong and raised two kids alone, gave us a great life now looks ready to give it all up. Her glow was gone and all she had left was a gloomy expression. I cleared off the tears that flowed down my cheeks and went into a washroom to get myself cleaned. I guessed my little cry there did gain some attention as people looked my way with pity. Yes pity! I mean why else would one cry in a hospital entrance if a loved one isn't in trouble... I looked away from their pity looks and went on with my mission. After ascertaining my eyes doesn't look like I have been crying, I went out and left for mom's room. Linda smiled my way as she saw me but I couldn't even fake smile. My heart and head hurt too much How will Chris feel when he hears this? I wondered I stopped at her room entrance and practiced my smile, looking at my face in my small mirror I was ready to face her. Hopefully, I don't cry in there Taking a deep breath in, I pushed open the door, and just like always her thin body was laying right there on her bed, her eyes were closed and the dark cycles looked so evident on her face. The once beautiful, full of life face although still pretty looks different Yeah different. I can't pinpoint how different it is but she does indeed feel and look different from the woman I grew up knowing. "Hey mom" I whispered dropping a kiss on her cheeks I noticed her opening her eyes slowly as she took me in. She looked so tired and sad and that broke my heart so much... "Alayna" she whispered "Yes mom, I brought you breakfast"I tried to make my voice as cherry as possible to avoid her asking questions She could only nod her head a little. I picked up the food warmer and poured the content in a bowl, picked up the spoon then sat next to her bed as I slowly and patiently served her soup. Chicken soup has always been her favorite so I made sure to make it for her as often as possible. While she slowly ate, I fed her lies. Yes lies about how we were living quite well and all, not all were lies though but the majority was. She would smile whenever she hears of how well Chris is doing, eating good and healthy food before heading to school! I knew she would be quite disappointed when she gets better and discovers all those stories none were true but right now I have no choice but to do so! She believed me when I told her she was lucky to have gotten free medical treatment thanks to an organization that insists on keeping its good deeds anonymous I honestly wished that lie was the truth... But it was a lie. I have to work myself to the bones daily just to keep her here I stayed with her for an hour, helped her clean up, and changed before leaving for my first job of the day. To her though I'm off to school As I left her ward, I could hear my heart breaking to pieces, my legs felt so shallow** I don't know how I'm still holding them up. My first job for the day was at a coffee shop. We always had a busy morning as it was located at a very busy street, workers and students will always drop by for a cup and the fact that we make really good coffee added to the inflow of customers The business is a family-owned inherited down to three generations. The present owner is a fifty-year-old man with the most kindest heart ever. He treats all these workers like family and is very understandable. Well humans being human, there is still some worker who takes his kindness as him been a fool and exploit him. "Good morning" I greeted Jack the **** who was the shop's barrister. He was checking and cleaning his brewing machine but he did look up with that entrancing smile of his and responded "Good morning Lay. How was your night?" He questioned My night was short, too short. I couldn't sleep because of the loads on me, I knew Chris's tuition fees is almost due to be paid and my savings was too little to cover for all the expenses and also take care of mom. I spent the whole night thinking of what to do that wouldn't involve selling my body since that seemed to have been the easiest and fastest way. Oh did I add, we are running out of foodstuffs too Those were the response I should have given, but I responded "it went quite well" I couldn't help the mockery in my heart towards myself. Quite well?!! If that is well Alayna , then I don't want it! "That's good to know. You look beautiful by the way"the urge to eye-roll him was strong but I resisted it. Jack is a nice guy and I'm certain he said what he said just to see me cheerful and not feel bad. If that ain't it then, he is just been an annoying ass mocking me. I was certain there were eye bags under my eyes. Even mom had noticed and I have lied that I stayed up late just to read. Jack and I made little talks while we prepared to welcome in the customers in fifteen minutes. The door opened and Favour walked in "I'm so sorry guys. My boyfriend slept over" she apologized grinning "Oh yeah, are we welcoming a mini you soon" I teased and they both laughed while her cheeks turned red. "I hate you Lay" she shyly said before heading into the staff room to get herself ready to work. At 7:30 am we were opened for business and as expected, customers flocked in as soon as we opened. A busy morning I whispered as I got engrossed in working and temporarily forgetting all my problems
