Chapter 1
Rule number one:  never trust the humans…  That was the biggest and most sacred rule in my pack. And I broke it. Life with the humans was always uneasy, even before I broke the rule.  Their village was about 10 miles from ours, and the village was the largest around, with the exception of the Capital.  Of course, there were also other villages like mine, home to many different packs. Mine was a much smaller pack than many of the others, but we were about to receive the greatest honor of all: we were about to host the annual mating season festivities. I was 20 years old when it happened.  It was the first mating season I would be allowed to participate in, despite having been of age for the last four years.  For whatever reason, my pack didn’t like travelling to other villages, and, if a pack didn’t join the festivities, they weren’t allowed to celebrate at all.  This year, my pack won the lottery, so we would be hosting the festivities for the first time in a decade. The village was alive preparing for the arrival of the other 12 packs in the country.  The smell of baked breads and sweets filled the air all over the village, and everyone hurried about, doing their part to prepare.  Since my family were farmers, we had to make sure there was enough cattle and grains for the feast. My job was to deliver the wheat to the miller. “Good morning, Hanna,” called Calista, the miller’s wife, from the door as I pulled up in my family’s wagon.  I smiled and hopped down from the driver’s seat as she waved her two boys out the door to unload the wagon. “Morning, Calista,” I smiled back.  I then smiled at her two boys: Gregory and Tom.  “Good morning to the two of you.” I dusted myself off as Calista approached me and wrapped an arm around me. “Will you be participating in the mating season festivities with the rest of us?” she asked as we watched Tom and Gregory bring in the wheat bales.  She looked at me with a mischievous look in her eyes. “Both my boys will be participating…” Catching what she meant, I shrugged. “Depends on if Mother needs help at the farm,” I responded politely.  She nodded with a look of concern. “And your father?” she asked.  “How is he?” I sighed and lowered my gaze. “He’s holding on,” I said sadly.  “Doc said he may not have much time left.”  She nodded in agreement. “He might be holding out to see his grandchildren,” she recommended.  “All the more reason for you to participate while you can. After all, what are the chances you’ll be able to participate again?”  I shook my head. “Mother can’t run the farm on her own,” I stated matter of factly.  “It’s bad enough we lost Joshua last spring to hunters, but losing Father could put us out for sure if we don’t keep the farm running.”  She nodded. “If you chose one of my sons, you’d have another able body to help you save that farm, Hanna,” she continued.  “Plus, it would give me more of an excuse to see you and your mother.” She cast a glance towards the mill, where both Gregory and Tom had disappeared with another bale of wheat.  “Don’t tell them I said this, but Gregory is interested in you and always asks about you whenever you bring the wheat. If you weren’t always rushing back to your farm, he’d have asked to court you already.”  I watched Gregory walk out of the mill and back towards the wagon. His muscles bulged beneath his shirt, and his skin glistened with sweat. He was handsome enough, and he and I had been childhood friends up until Father fell ill, but I had never considered courting, especially while helping Mother with the farm.  Seeing me, Gregory smiled and waved before grabbing double the bales his younger brother could carry and taking them to the mill. I blushed and sighed. “I suppose you’re right,” I said after a moment.  “I will see how things are at the farm and come find you first if I go.”  Realizing it was the best answer I could give her, Calista smiled. “Alright, Hanna,” she sighed.  “Give my regards to your Mother and Father for me.”  I nodded and went back to the now empty wagon. “I will, Calista,” I promised with a smile.  Just when I reached the wagon, Gregory smiled down at me and offered me a boost into the driver’s seat.  As soon as I was situated, I looked at them. “I’ll see you all later.” With that, I was off back towards the farm. I was about halfway home, lost in thought over what Calista had said, when I was stopped by a small group of men.  They looked like they had been on the road for awhile, and they smelled like one of us, but I knew they weren’t from our pack.  I had never seen them before, and they had a different scent than most of the men in my pack. One smiled at me. “Looks like this place will be well worth the trip after all if all the females are as cute as this one,” he said as he glanced around at his fellow pack members.  They all nodded in agreement and inched closer to my wagon as the first one continued. “Where are you off to, miss?” I swallowed hard and kept my voice steady, regardless of how scared I felt. “Home,” I said curtly, trying to keep the conversation short so I could keep going.  Another one grabbed at my horse and looked at the others. “You hear that, guys?” he asked sarcastically.  “She’s going home…” They all laughed in amusement as the first one came up beside me. “You’re not going anywhere unless we say so, miss,” he sneered just before grabbing my hand and pulling me down from the driver’s seat. I yelped in surprise as I crashed into his, but before I could react much more than that, I was surrounded.  I growled in anger and nipped the man’s wrist, forcing him to let me go. He snarled and struck me across the face, making me fall back into another.  Before I could pull away, he had both my arms pinned behind my back and was pulling me off the road. He threw me down onto the softer ground, and I attempted to run, but one of them was already on me, pinning me to the ground.  Another was by my head, wrestling my arms over my head, while another held me down by the ankles. I whimpered as I felt the fabric of my skirt start to travel up my legs, exposing what lay below. Finally, I started calling out for help, struggling to free myself, while the remaining men laughed and watched them all struggle to keep me down. Tears were streaming down my face before the one pulling up my skirt was suddenly pulled off me.  A new man, much cleaner and better dressed than the others, with slick black hair and a light stubble threw the first man into the nearest tree with a deep throated growl.  As he turned to the others, I was released, and my other two captors scrambled to get away from me. The man looked from them to me and back again while others showed up, growling at the trembling men. “Pathetic,” he said in a deep, angry voice as he offered me a hand.  I blushed and accepted it, pushing my skirts back down into place as he helped me to my feet.  He shook his head, obviously smelling my tears as he continued. “Mating season starts tonight, yet you dare attack a female on the road?”  He snorted in disgust. “Bad enough it took three of you to take her down.” He examined me, and I lowered my gaze as I realized he was an Alpha.  “None of you are worthy of this female.” His eyes glowed red, and his chest puffed out. “Now go!” With that, the smaller group took off towards the village, and he looked at me as I wiped away the remains of my tears.  “Are you alright?” I nodded, keeping my eyes down. Rule number two: never look an Alpha in the eye unless you’re challenging him. “Thank you,” I said, and he nodded curtly. “Where are you off to?” he asked, and I gulped. “To my family’s farm on the outskirts of the village, sir,” I answered automatically, as any Omega in my pack would for an Alpha.  He nodded. “Alright, be on your way then,” he said.  He picked me up by the waist and set me up on the driver’s seat before nodding at a few of his men.  “Make sure she gets there safely, then report back to me.” Three men nodded and, as soon as I started the wagon towards home, they walked along side my horse.  Soon enough, the man and the rest of his men had disappeared into the village, and I looked at one of the men. “If you don’t mind me asking, where are you from?” I asked, hoping I wasn’t stepping out of line.  If there was one thing I was never supposed to do, it was challenge the authority of a male. The man never once looked at me. “We’re from the Capital,” he stated, and my heart dropped. “You mean that was…?” I started, and he nodded. “That was Alpha Darius of the Blood Moon pack,” he said confirming my fears.  I swallowed hard and clamped my mouth shut. He smiled ever so slightly. “Normally, he doesn’t get involved with affairs like yours, but I suppose he took a special interest in you.”  I bit my lip as he continued. “Not sure why he’d be interested in an Omega, but I’m not going to challenge his authority.” The rest of the ride was quiet, but I could feel their eyes on me from time to time.  Not that I blamed them. Once we arrived at my family’s farm, the first one smiled at me and held out his hand. “May I?” he asked, and I took his hand. As he helped me down, Mother came out of the house. “Back already, Hanna?” she asked before stopping when she saw the men.  She turned a wary eye to me. “Is everything okay?” I was about to respond, but the man smiled and spoke for me. “Just a little trouble on the road,” he said.  “We thought we’d walk her home.” She looked at me, and I lowered my gaze. “I had a run in with some males from another pack, and their Alpha asked them to escort me home,” I stated.  When she got a worried expression on her face, I forced a smile. “I’m fine, though.” She nodded and smiled at the men. “Thank you for returning her home safely,” she said, and the first man smiled. “Anything for our Alpha,” he said before turning to me.  “I have a feeling I’ll be seeing you again, mis…” He frowned.  “Hanna, isn’t it?” I nodded, and he took my hand and kissed it gently.  “Until we meet again, Hanna.” He then tipped his head to my mother, and they went back down the road.  As soon as they were gone, Mother turned to me. “Alright now, tell me everything,” she said as she guided me back into the house.  I told her everything, from my conversation with Calista about Gregory and the mating season festivities to my run in on the road to the Alpha who came to the rescue.  She chewed her lower lip while I spoke until I finally finished. When she spoke, she had an icy tone. “Maybe you shouldn’t go tonight.” I shook my head. “I would like to go, Mother,” I said.  “This could be my one chance to find someone to be with who will help us out here on the farm, especially since Father is so sick.”  She nodded solemnly. “True, but this is only the beginning,” she said.  “You know our customs. More often than not, we mate and move on.  Very rarely are we granted permission by the Alpha to marry.” I nodded. “I know, but I have to try,” I stated.  “For you and Father.” She sighed and nodded. “Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she said.  I nodded, and she smiled. “I have everything else done around the farm already.  Go bathe and get ready for tonight.” I smiled before taking off to my room. “Will you be coming?” I asked, and she shook her head. “My place is here, with your father,” she said, and I went to my room.
