Chapter 1 - Heather
"I'm hanging up now, Mom," I say quickly before my mother can express her sorrows any further. "What, no, Heather, wait," the woman on the other side of the video call tries to keep me from my plan. I roll my eyes, but pause: "We'll be there soon. I can't keep talking on the phone." From the other side of the line, a sigh sounded: "All right, but take care of yourself and don't take over". I nod: "Of course, Grandma is still there to help me." "That doesn't necessarily reassure me," my mother says. "From your mouth it almost seems as if I would break down when I try to lift up a box," complains my grandmother, who sits to my left and steers the car safely through the dense traffic of New York. To suppress a grin, I bite my lip and look over at my grandma. With any other grandmother, my mother's concern would probably be justified, but mine is still relatively young and fit. She got pregnant with my mom at the age of seventeen, which is why she is not very old yet. But Mom still worries. "Yes, Mom," mumbles my mother and I am glad that only I can see her eye rolls. "But now I'm really hanging up," I say without allowing objections and end the face call. I let myself sink back into my seat and look out of the window. We move at a snail's pace and I wonder if it would be faster if I got out and walked. Probably that wouldn't be a really good solution either, because I have a pretty bad sense of direction. So I sighed and put my headphones back in my ears to listen to the sounds of 'Come as you are'. Unfortunately, long car rides never really do me any good and this has definitely been more than long so far. The little village I come from is a little further away from the big city than I expected. Nevertheless I am more than happy with a decision to move. I just had to get out of the daily grind and away from the people in my home village. There were just too many memories of the relationship with Blake, my longtime childhood sweetheart, and the locals always thought it necessary to remind me of my failed relationship. My mother was only against my decision - as a mother I would probably hardly react differently - to move away and then to a big city. The fact that my grandmother and my aunt live there convinced them in the end. In addition, I already got her a part-time job in a boutique here, as well as a place for the study course of my dreams. Half an hour later we finally arrive at my apartment and by chance Grandma finds a parking lot right in front of my front door. "Fate seems to be well-disposed towards us today," she says with a smile as she silences the engine and unbuckles. "Yes, of course", I roll my eyes, stow my mobile phone in my jacket pocket and then get out as well. I've never been a person who believes in fate and never will be. Now standing on the sidewalk, I close my eyes and take a deep breath of the evening air. "Don't dawdle, Heather", Grandma pushes me lightly into the side and makes me open my eyes again quickly: "The boxes don't carry themselves up by themselves". "But it would be nice", I grin and take two cardboard boxes out of the already opened trunk of the car. "Do you have the front door key?" I ask and my grandmother nods and climbs the stairs to the front door to unlock it for me. I take a few seconds to observe my new home. The building is one of those cute brown brick houses with the small stone staircase in front of it that you always see in the movies. I would never have dreamed of being able to live here, but my aunt let her contacts play and was thus able to secure me an apartment in the house. But when the burden became too heavy for me, I turned my eyes away and headed for the entrance. In passing Grandma puts the key into my jacket pocket, so that I can go ahead and bring the things into the apartment. But as soon as I realize that I have to climb stairs, I sigh. I really didn't think of that. Maybe I would have taken fewer things with me in advance. Cursing myself inside, I start to climb the stairs. Fortunately, my apartment is on the first floor, so it's not quite as exhausting. I briefly put the cartons in front of my apartment door and then unlock them to quickly push the cartons with my foot into the corridor. However, I don't take the time to examine my new home and instead make my way back to the stairs. In the hallway I meet a man who just steps into the door to the apartment opposite mine. I look at him with interest. After all, he is most likely my new neighbor. I briefly consider talking to him, but before I can reach a decision, he has already disappeared into his apartment. I have to say that the man looks pretty interesting - if you can judge that in so few seconds - and that he seems to be something of my age. I quickly push this thought out of my head. I am here to make a career and not to look for a new relationship. Because I'm tired of men for now.
