RUN
“You’ll never be able to run from me!” rang through the woods on the quiet night. The little mottled brown wolf racing through the woods as fast as her legs could carry her. Her heart rate racing getting faster every time she heard the howls of the wolves chasing her. “No,” she thought, “I will not go back into that tiny box.” Suddenly, the smell of sandalwood and cedar hit her, almost causing her to stop running. “No, no, no, no, no! I can’t be that close! I’m on River Moon Pack land!” As quickly as she stopped, she started running again. Even more afraid now, than she was before. --- Beginning of Flashback--- “Star! Time for supper!” called her mom. “Coming mom!” was the quick response she received from her daughter. She walked in with her father, Markus, the Beta of the River Moon Pack. “Well hello my darling Cassandra, how is my beautiful mate doing?” asked Markus as he grabbed his wife around her waist and pecked her cheek, receiving the standard “GROSS!” from their daughter. Markus looked at his daughter, and said “One day you’ll do the same with your mate my darling daughter. Until then you’ll have to put up with the affection, I show your mother.” The tender little moment was interrupted by the sound of howls. Markus’s eyes glazed over and he suddenly yelled, “Star! Cassandra! Hide!” as he rushed out the door to defend their pack. Cassandra grabbed their daughter and headed to the basement towards the secret hiding spot that was prepared for times like this specifically. Only those who were apart of the River Moon Pack knew about its location, because every pack member’s house was built with one, each one warded by the first witch to protect women and children against evils. All of the sudden she screams and collapses, causing Star to cry out, “Mom! Come on we need to hide!” Star grabbed her mother’s limp body and drags it to the hiding spot. Barely getting her mother safely in when she heard it. Growls, punctuated by steps, coming towards the basement stairs. Star had to decide, something she knew would be the deciding point of life or death for her family. Quickly closing the door, and moving things in front of the hiding spot, she knew what was coming. Kneeling on the cold, hard floor she waited. The steps and growls coming closer, making it seem like it was an eternity waiting for her fate. Suddenly he was there. Standing in front of her. His aura enough to make her feel like she was suffocating. Soon there was a man, in all his naked glory standing in front of her. He was 6’ 5” and built like a god. His eyes glowed orange, his hair pure black, and his voice was rough. Scaring her the first time she heard him. “Do you know why I am here?” he asked her. “Yes.” She replied. “Yes what?!” he thunders. “Yes Sir.” She quickly corrects. “Tell me why I am here.” He demands. “You’re here to claim me, Sir.” She quickly replied. “Why would I do that?” he questions. “Because you are Alpha Damon Cliffe of the Shadow-land Pack, Sir.” She states, knowing that will not please him. He quickly grabs her by her hair, dragging her up the stairs and out of her childhood house. ---End of Flashback--- She collapses, hoping that she wasn’t followed, as she tries to figure out where she is. Quickly realizing she was less than a mile from her childhood home, she knew the only place that she would be safe would be there. Running there as quickly as possible, she darts down the stairs in her wolf form, stopping in front of the secret spot. Touching the symbols in the correct order with her snout, the door hisses open, and she slides in as quietly as possible, the door closing behind her. She collapses, from both the pain from her wounds and the exhaustion quickly setting in. Hoping that her body will start to heal she soon falls asleep. Not too far away, a battle between man and wolf continues. Edward argues internally with his wolf, Treznor. “I know what you smelled Treznor! I smelled it too,” sighs Edward. He sits next to the river with his head in his hands. Lavender and Vanilla, his favorite smell in the world. The smell of his mate, the one who disappeared 5 years ago. Yet, when he smelled it this time, it was mixed with blood. Treznor pointed out, “We don’t know if she’s dead. That could be her hurt, and needing help.” Edward thought about it, and decided Treznor was right. He linked Cas and Trey, his Beta and Delta, to keep a lookout on the southern border. “Got it Alpha,” was the response he got from both. He quickly stripped his shorts off, tying them to his leg, and shifted into his charcoal wolf. Treznor took off, nose to the wind, looking for the smell of Lavender and Vanilla. Catching the scent, he sped up, worried about the strong smell of blood that was mixed in with it. Slowing down he noticed the abandoned cabin up ahead. “Treznor, let’s shift back, I think I know where she’s at,” said Edward. Shifting into his human form, Edward put the shorts on, and cautiously walked the perimeter. Smelling nothing out of the ordinary, he headed inside. Making his way down into the basement, he noticed that the smell of blood was getting heavier as he went. Making his way to the wall, he pushed the symbols, letting him into the hiding spot. Instantly noticing the small brown wolf, he rushed to her side worried. Gently picking her up, he sprints through the connected tunnel heading to the medical ward, hoping that he wasn’t too late. As he ran, he linked Cas, “Cas, I need Anna at the medical ward, as fast as possible. Meet me there, I’m coming in with an injured wolf.” Anna linked him, “What can you tell me?” “Not entirely sure what all is wrong, she’s lost a lot of blood, and she’s still wolf form. She smells off, like something is blocking her shift,” Edward quickly replied. As he ran, his mind went back to the last time he had ran this tunnel. ---Beginning of Flashback--- “Hang on Mrs. Jonston,” Edward said as he carried her to the medical ward. She wasn’t responding, and he didn’t blame her. Her mate had been killed in the attack, and no one had seen Star. He burst out of the tunnel and ran up the stairs as fast as he could, calling out “I need a doctor! Now!” Dr. Wesley rushed over. “Put her on the bed please Edward,” he says, grabbing his stethoscope and checking her vitals. “Her heart-rate is abnormal,” he soon says. “I need a shot of epinephrine stat!” Dr. Wesley looks at Edward and says, “She’s in shock. What happened out there?” Edward looks at her and replies, “We’re not entirely sure. We were attacked, and going off of sheer force of the attack, it wasn’t rogues. Markus was lying in front of their house dead when we got there. I went to look for Mrs. Jonston and Star, but I only found Mrs. Jonston.” His eyes brim with tears, “Star’s 16th birthday is tomorrow. I was waiting to tell her that we were mates until tomorrow. What if something happened to her?” he says to Dr. Wesley. Dr. Wesley puts his hand on his shoulder, and says “We’ll find her Edward. Just give it time.” They buried Mrs. Jonston with her husband two days later. When asked what she died of, she died of a broken heart, the pain of not only losing her mate, but also her child was too much and her heart couldn’t take it. ---End of Flashback--- Nearing the end of the tunnel, he looked to see if she was still breathing, hoping that she’d be okay. Moving up the stairs into the medical ward, he carefully placed her on the hospital bed, and looked up at Anna. “Her breathing has been getting shallower and shallower. The bleeding has stopped, but she hasn’t made any sign of waking up.” He quickly tells her. Cas looks at him and asks, “Do we know who she is? Where she came from? Or even how she got into the hiding place there?” “Yeah, her name’s Star Jonston, she disappeared 5 years ago, and she’s my mate.” Edward says to the both of them.
