I leaped from my bed, trying my very best not to knock over the lamp on the bedside table. I had to leave, now. The urgency in my heart was overpowering but there was nothing I could do to calm myself as another wave of unease washed over me. Where was all this coming from? I had no idea what time it was but outside my window, the moon hung low and the gleam of the stars was fading. Daylight must be near. Grabbing a pair of running shoes, I dashed out of my bedroom and down the steps. All through the house was quiet. My mother would be awake soon and my brother Andrew wouldn’t be awake until midday; that was the perk of being a teenager on summer break. Carefully I unlocked the door and grabbed my keys before taking off down the street. All the houses were dark, and I knew that if anyone saw me out here, they’d try to stop me, or even call the police. I ran as fast I could, ignoring the pain that filled my lungs and the quiet voice in the back of my mind telling me to turn around and go home. I wished it was as simple as that because although I had no idea where I was going and why I was going there, I knew in her heart that if I didn’t go, the unease would never pass. After what felt like hours running at full speed, I finally turned unto an old road that I hadn’t traveled for years. Why was I here? The old road led to the old park that had been decommissioned after two children died there. The instances of their deaths had been categorized as mysterious circumstances, but since then, no parent wanted to send their children there. Instead, the housing council had moved forward to build new apartments. All along the streets, there were trucks and machines I assumed were being used by the builders. As I moved closer the hairs on my skin began to rise. There was a sharp voice in her mind telling her to hurry but I didn’t know where to or why I needed to hurry. I kept walking until I was at the enclosed fencing which blocked my view of the development. Looking around to make sure no-one else was there, I decided to go over the fencing to see what had compelled me to come here. Ignoring the fear and confusion that began to engulf me, I jumped over the high fencing and landed with a thud on the other side. I had to give thanks for my gymnastics training, it had made me agile enough to leap over anything. Looking around, I realized that there was no-one else there. “Thank God,” I whispered knowing that if I had been caught, I would have to explain to my parents just how and why I had come here. Shaking off the concern about being caught, I began moving towards the massive hole that had been dug to lay the foundation. In my mind, the thought of walking over to it and finding the dead bodies of those two children was real. Or maybe it was the fear that someone would pop up and thrust me over the side. Whatever it was, I was in real danger and yet, the voice in my mind kept urging me forward. I moved closer and closer ever so quietly. When I finally made it to the edge of the massive hole and looked down, both disappointment and relief filled me. There were no dead bodies, to my disappointment, and there were no dead bodies, to my relief. Then why was I there? After a few moments considering the several ways things could get worse, something caught my eye. It was a flicker, almost indistinguishable in the darkness, but there was something down there. It was giving off its own tiny light and I wondered if someone might have left their phone in the rubbles. There was a part of me that hoped this was the case but another part of me knew that it was unlikely. This was the reason I was here. It was the reason I had awoken, covered in sweat and gasping for air. It was the reason I had run ten blocks to go to a park that no-one went to anymore. And it was the reason I was about to go down into the then foot hole without understanding why. There were ladders all around leading to the bottom of the hole and I decided it might be more convenient than a ten-foot drop. Descending slowly on the ladder closest to the gleaming rock, I did my best not to think of what was happening. At the bottom, my feet hit the soft dirt. Looking around, I made sure that there were no snakes or other crawlers that could have made an uneventful descend into the hole. With slow meaningful steps, I made my way forward trying my best to create little or no tracks in the dirt. The last thing I wanted to do was leave too much evidence of my trespassing. Looking around I spotted the light I had seen earlier still flickering beneath the dirt. I could tell the light wasn’t from a cell phone because the pigments were too sharp and bright. Kneeling next to it, I brushed the dirt away to see what it was. To my shock and amazement, it was a beautiful medallion made of gold. It was nothing like I had ever seen before and I hesitated to pick it up. It was gleaming, and the light was blinding but all I could think of was how beautiful and ethereal it was. Pick it up! The voices in my head shouted commandingly. Reaching down, I touched it to see what would happen. A warm sense of peace and calm flooded me which was a direct contrast to the anxiety and fear that had been plaguing me just moments before. “What is this?” I asked aloud I clung to the round gleaming medallion and held it in my hands with the reverence of a priest. It was heavy as if made of pure gold and I could tell it was old but well preserved. As suddenly as the calm had filled me, a feeling a horror incapacitated me. The stone began gleaming brighter and brighter and as it glowed, it became hotter and hotter until I could no longer stand to hold it. I flashed my hand out intent on throwing it away, but the medallion clung to me as if it was drawing life from me. A cry of horror erupted from me as the fear that I didn’t understand began to cripple me. If this was a horror movie, I had played right into it. Suddenly the light began to change shape and instead of blinding colorful rays, I could almost make out the face and body of another human being. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this.” The person said I once again tried to pry the medallion from my hand but it would not budge. “Child!” the person admonished in a loud commanding voice that sounded more like an army than a single person.  “Be still,” the hologram-like figure insisted Unwittingly, I stopped and stood still. I realized that I was losing control of my body and I was terrified. “I know you have no clue just who you are yet, but in time you will.” The voices said, “I have guided you here because you needed to find this before you figure it out.” “Who are you?” I asked “I am you,” the voices replied, “child, the time has come, you need to prepare yourself for what is about to happen.” I shook my head wondering what exactly she meant. “What’s about to happen?” I asked “There is no time to explain,” the voice said, “I have to prepare you.” Before I could reply, the voices began chanting. In my fear, I tried to turn and run to the closest ladder but I was stuck, my feet just wouldn’t move and my eyes were beginning to close. I struggled to gain control over my body but the harder I tried, the more I lost it. “Alementus Dun Rigut.” The voices began to chant. I strained to figure out what they meant but it was a language I didn’t speak or even knew existed. This was the one situation where being fluent in six languages just didn’t help. The voices got louder, the chant became more fervent and the last thing I could remember before my eyes closed was the beams of light coming together to form a bigger more elaborate version of the medallion. What the hell had I gotten myself into?
