Chapter One
To say that you hated life would be a complete lie, there is always something about life that everyone enjoyed. Rose Quinten lived a life beyond many her age in the world, it can only be described as extraordinary. But not in the way anyone might think. Her father was the master behind Rose’s well-looked after life, if it were not for his work ethics as a young man they wouldn’t be where they were today. Former Navy seal Scott Quinten moved to a life of security for the rich, the sub level of the three-storey house was the base of operations for his work, a job that Rose is very much involved in. The business soared in one short year and because of that Rose was now standing in her new home that was located on the other side of the planet. From the murky weathers of the United Kingdom, Rose was stood looking out the bay window of her new home. The sun was shining through the glass creating a warm feeling to the flesh of Rose’s arms. The heat of the sun’s rays was a comfort to the young women, albeit a feeling that almost everyone neglects to acknowledge in their forever busy schedules, it was a nice change for Rose. The property agent stood by the door with a perky smile on her face; the pan-suit she was wearing fitted her perfectly straight figure. She handed over the keys to Scott and for the final time she left the house. Scott turned around and held the keys between his thumb and middle finger and gave them a light shake. With all the empty rooms in the house and the semi-opened floor plan, the small chimes of the keys echoed throughout the large four-story mansion like house. Rose smiled then turned to look out the bay window at her new home, it was a new start and a chance to try and forget her past. “So, what do you think?” Scott questions his only child as he joins her too look out the at the Los Angeles beach front. Rose sighs, it wasn’t negative, more of relief than anything else. “I think we made the right decision, and it coincided with the logical thing to do, having most of our clients out here” Rose stated. Scott nodded his head in agreement and continued to look out the window. Though the silence in the neighbourhood was about to be disturbed when three moving trucks came to a screeching halt outside the new Quinten house. Rose followed behind her father in silence savouring every second she could grab as the minute she walked out the house, silence would never come again for a long time. “Better order take-out, this is going to be one long night” Scott informed his daughter. Rose nodded her head and began her search on the internet for local take-outs. The Chinese and kebab shops almost had a heart attack over the phone when Rose put the order in, it was a large order. Jogging out of her house, Rose finds her father already at the back of the moving truck with his team unloading them onto the front lawn. “What do you need me to take?” Rose asks. Though there was plenty of men to unload the furniture, Rose wasn’t going to stand by and let them do it alone. “Go and sort your room, we’ll do this” Scott tells his seventeen-year-old daughter. Rose shakes her head, “It’s fine dad, I can help you know, I’m not completely broken” she jokes out. Scott looks at her with a sad smile, Rose saw but ignored, it. The past didn’t matter, they were moving forward. Grabbing a nearby box, Rose takes it to the location stated on the box. Office. Rose put the box down in the corner of the room and admired the new office. This was where the paperwork was held for the business, Rose was going to be in here often when she worked, making sure files are in the right place and booking new clients. As Rose moved to the door the phone rang. Moving the company number to the new house was one of the first things they did when they first got to the house. Siting at the empty desk, Rose answers the phone. “Quinten security, you’re speaking to Rose Quinten, how may I help you” automatically using her telephone voice. “I am looking to hire your company for protection” a male’s voice speaks out. Rose looks around for her appointment diary and sees it in a box sitting beside the desk. Grabbing the book, she opened it to the current week. Having just moved there was no appointments giving Rose a wide log for meeting the potential new client. “Okay, we would obviously need to meet and discuss the type of protection you are wanting and the situation that has occurred for you to require it” Rose explains to him. “Can I come tomorrow; I need this in place as soon as possible” the man on the other end of the phone. Rose was going to deny him, that had yet to settle in, but the desperate plea in his voice had Rose agreeing. “You can come over at two, is that okay with you?” Rose questions. “Yes, that will be great” he replies. Rose takes the man’s name and gives her address, Richard Mathews only lived ten minutes away. As she closed the diary, Scott walked into the office carrying two boxes. When he placed them down, he sees his child sat at the desk and raised an eyebrow in question. “A man name Richard Mathews called wanting out protection services, he sounded slightly fearful, so I booked for us to meet him tomorrow afternoon at two” Rose informs her father. Scott nods his head, “Great, we could do with more clients since a few of them were lost when we moved and also ended contracts”. Rose walked to her father and the pair headed out of the office to help the guys unload the rest of the trucks. By sunset, the bottom of the house was unpacked, though the furniture wasn’t in the right places Rose wanted them, they could mess about with the design in the morning. The lads had managed to get the gym set up in the basement, one of the first things they did in fact. Such gym buffs. The food arrived and everyone tucked in, with the kitchen set up Rose looked at the garden, it connected right onto the beach, the sand merging with the green grass. “Rose come eat, before the pigs get there first” he says from the dining room table as he unpacks the food from their bags. Stepping away from the back door which led to the garden, Rose grabs some plates and cutlery and puts them by the food. The team comes bounding in and grabs a plate before digging into the wide range of food in front of them. “I’m glad you bought a new dining table, the old one didn’t fit us all round” Leighton comments. Rose chuckles, “Well we didn’t exactly plan on the entire team being round for dinner every night”. Back in England, the house was only small, their business ran from the garage. Now they had moved, the guys came too and Scott figured the best way was for them all to live in the same house, it was much cheaper to buy a business house than seven separate properties which would have been all over the town. “So Rose, when do you start school?” Tommy asks as he shoves in a mouthful of food. Scott coughs to clear his throat. “I was actually going to talk to you about, I’m not putting you in school, after what happened before, I figured it would be better to home school you, besides you are already completed a year of college in England” Scott says. He was cautious as to how to bring the subject up, but thanks to Tommy he didn’t have too. Rose looked down to her plate, her fork moving the food about, no longer interested in eating. “Rose” Scott says, his voice soft. Looking up she plasters on a smile, “Okay, it lets me works at my own speed and still help you with the business” she explains. School in London wasn’t fun, in fact it was horrible and Rose knew she would never forget it, she never spoke about it either, the guys in the house knew and kept their mouths shut, they were there when it all happened. The guys finished and took to the living room to put on the sports and chat amongst themselves. Rose cleaned up, denying any help, they had done nearly all the lifting, it was the least she could do. As she dried the last plate and put it in the cupboard, she hears Jack call from the living room. Drying her hands, Rose walks into the room. “What’s up?” she asks. “Heard there’s a party a few streets over, you should go and check it out, it may be the only chance to make friends” Jack jokes at the end. Rose rolls her eyes at Jack’s poor joke. Jack was the youngest of the group, only been working for her father for five years. “You should go” Scott encourages. Rose looks at her father in shock “You are seriously telling me to go to a party full of drunk teenage boys?” has she stepped into another realm? Scott chuckled at his daughters look of shock, no father would suggest what he was, but his daughter wasn’t like every other girl her age. “What kind of father are you?” she jokes. Heading to her room, Rose takes a shower, the stench of sweat and takeout lingered on her clothes. Rose walks out of her ensuite bathroom naked, her towel in hand as she rubs her hair to get all the water out. Her room was yet to be unpacked; her furniture ready for things to be put in them. Her bed was the only thing up and ready. Kneeling to the ground, Rose rummages through her suitcases and boxes for underwear and clothes. Shredded black jeans were her go too bottoms. Putting on matching black laved underwear she slips the jeans on, it was a bit of a struggle, it had been a while since she worn them last. The shirt chosen was ‘f**k you’ tank shirt, she had it in a crop top version, but since ‘the incident’ she wasn’t confident in wearing things like that anymore. Her feet had black converse wedges on. Being only five foot three, the extra height helped with sight mainly, especially if she was in a crowd. Quickly drying her hair, the natural beach waves stand out with her blonde hair. Her skateboard leant against the wall in the hall when she walked downstairs. Calling over her shoulder her goodbyes to her family she placed the board down and headed to the sound of the loud music. The neighbours must really hate these people, she was still a few streets away and could hear the music. She finally finds the house and the lawn is scattered in cups, cars parked up and down the street, none of which parked straight. It was only nine o’clock and people were already wobbling around on their feet, some even heaving their guts out in the bushes nearby. Rose wrinkles her now in disgust, the owners of the house are going to be pissed off in the morning. She didn’t bother to knock; people were coming in and out as they pleased so one more person wasn’t going to make a difference. The music was so loud the pictures hanging on the wall vibrated. The mass of people in the small house was unreal, pushing through the hordes of people, Rose makes her way to the kitchen, there was drinks all over the place, but she knew better than to grab any of them. Opening the fridge door, Rose grabbed a bottle of beer, checking that it was still sealed before opening it. The living room had turned into a make shift dance floor, the furniture pushed up against the walls as people danced in the middle, grinding up one another, this was not Rose’s scene. Even more so when a drunk guy came stumbling up to Rose, his drink spilling over his cup as he moved. “Hey purty girl” he slurs out. Slumping against the wall to try and hold himself up. Rose rolls her eyes. His hands reach out towards her, but she recoils in disgust, when he tries again, she automatically slaps his hands away. Agitated, the drunken guy moves quicker than Rose anticipated and grips her arm. Pain emerges from his vice grip and she winces in pain, biting her lip she tugs hoping he would let go. “Stop, you’re hurting me” she whimpers out. His angry stare suddenly turns suggestive and not in a nice way “Why don’t we take this upstairs” he says. Rose didn’t have the strength to fight against a six-foot drunk guy and she was pulled aggressively through the crowd, no one noticed the struggle. Rose continues to fight him, but nothing worked, in fact, his grip tightened, it would most definitely bruise. When she got to the bottom of the stairs, she had enough room to yank her whole body away. “Let go of me” she shouts. He stops his ascension and turns to look at Rose, “I’m not the kind of girl you can just grab and sleep with, so let me go” she demands. His grip loosens and Rose takes the opportunity to release herself from his grip. Her free arm holds the place he had a death grip and rubs the sore spot. As she focused on her pain, Rose was unaware of the guy raising his hand to hit her. She didn’t have time to move out of the way, his hand came swinging towards her face, Rose’s eyes go wide in fright, she immediately closes her eyes as she waits for the impact. It never came. Opening one eye, Rose looks down to see the drunk guy on the floor with some random dude on top of him punching him in the face. Rose gasps as she watched the scene unfold, other’s around glance at them but don’t pay attention, this must happen a lot. When the guy gives one final punch to the drunk man on the ground he stands up. Straightening his clothes, he turns to face Rose. “Are you okay?” his breathed out heavily. Rose watched as he ran his hand through his hair and his icy blue eyes staring right at her grey and blue eyes. She nods, remaining silent. His eyes move to her arm that she was holding, he reaches forward, Rose remains still allowing him to take a hold of her arm. The gentle touch sends shivers through her body. When his fingers touched the newly forming bruise she hisses and tugs her arm away. “Sorry” he mumbles, then releases he arm “You need ice” he states. Not giving Rose chance to deny and leave, he takes the hand that wasn’t injured and guides her through the crowd. People turn to see and move out of the way, they parted like the red sea, Rose looked at everyone confused, but no one would meet her gaze or his for that matter. He opens a door which led to the garage, freezers sat on the back wall. Releasing her hand, he opens the freezer and rummages around, pulling out a bag of ice, he turns back to Rose and places it on her bruise. She winces from the cold touch, but the cool sensation had her relaxing. “Cold?” he asks with a light chuckle. She nods. “It will reduce the swelling, the colour will still be there though, for a little while at least” he nods at her. Rose gives a small smile “Thank you”. The guy whose name was yet to be revealed smiled. “They’re going to go ape” she utters. The guy leans against the freezer, “Over protective boyfriend and brother?” he asks. Rose shakes her head, “They’re my dad’s work team, really overprotective, if they see this, let’s just say world war three” she giggle out. The guy laughs, it rings through her ears like a melody she didn’t want to turn off. “Um, I should probably go, if he’s woken up, he’s going to come looking” she says. The guy in front of her shook his head “He won’t, don’t worry about that” he says a look of dark determination. Handing the ice bag back, Rose moves to leave but he reaches out to stop her, “Do you have to go?” he asks. “Why?” she questions. He shrugs his shoulders, “I don’t really talk to a lot of people, they always act up around me, you don’t”. Rose nods, “I could maybe stay a little while”. Rose watches as he scratches the back of his neck, and but his bottom lip in nervousness. “I’m sure my father and the guys are still watching a football game” Rose confirms her stay. “Your family a big fan of football?” he asks trying to keep the conversation going. Rose nods, “English football, you guys call it soccer, right?”. His eyes light up with surprise, “I wondered where the accent was from”. Rose chuckles, “Americans, and their problems distinguishing accents” she says. He returns that statement with a mock glare. The guy shows her up stairs where it was quiet, he entered a room and Rose looks around, “Are you sure we’re okay to be in here?” she questions. He nods “He’s my brother’s friend” was all he replied. Rose closes the door behind her and then realises, “s**t” she curses out. “What?” he asks. “My board, I dropped it when he grabbed me” she says about to leave the room to get it. “I’ll go” he says and was gone before she had time to argue the point. A few minutes tick by and he returns with her board in his hand. Grateful she takes it from him. He sits on the bed grabbing an Xbox controller for himself and one for Rose, “Call of duty” she says when she sees the screen loading. Rose shakes her head amused. Sitting down beside him she takes a controller, “You know I never got your name?” she says. He hums, “Nathaniel” he says. “Rose” she replies. He glances at her and smiles, “Rose” he utters, his tongue gliding over his bottom lip once he said it. Rose couldn’t help but follow the motion of his tongue and she soon felt something stir in her stomach. During the game, Rose learnt a lot about Nathaniel, his favourite colour; blue, he has a motorcycle which his mother hates him riding. He’s been in trouble a lot, so people seem to avoid him. Been all over Europe on holiday and a younger brother which he mentioned before. Rose told him her favourite colour and Nathaniel looked at her with a smirk “I would have never guessed that” he says looking at her attire. She also told him that this was her first move and she had never been abroad before, moving to America was her first international travel. No siblings and she wanted to visit Australia; it was the first place she would go when she had chance. If there wasn’t words being spoken, there was laughter, and calls of annoyance form Nathaniel when Rose beat him in the game. “I’ve never been defeated, ever” Nathaniel exclaims throwing his hands in the air. Rose laughs, “Well looks like you just got your butt whooped for the first time”. Nathaniel looks at her with a sly grin. His controller falls to the ground as he reaches out for Rose and pulls her onto his lap. She drops the controller on the bed and her hands grip onto his arms to steady herself. When she calmed down from her laughter, she notices she was on his lap and apologises trying to get up. “Sorry” she mutters, looking to his eyes, she sees him drawing closer, part of her wanted to move, but she remained on his lap, he was going to kiss her, and she wasn’t going to stop him. His breath danced across her lips and Rose automatically licked her lips, Nathaniel kissed her and Rose moved her right hand into his hair, she curls her fingers round his black locks and he moans. One hand snakes around her waist pulling her flush against him whilst his other rested on her thigh and gave a light squeeze. Rose smiled into the kiss, it was her very first kiss, at seventeen she had never kissed anyone till now. But she never thought it would feel like this Nathaniel begins to massage her thigh and Rose moves her hips a moan erupting from her throat. The separate moments later, he rest his forehead on her own and both are breathing heavily trying to catch their breath. “Wow” she breathes out and he smiles in response.
