The lone She-Wolf
The music blared and the laughter roared. It was Christmas, and man was it a merry one. With wolves from all over the pack and all throughout town, even a few humans had come through. It was also a joyous occasion, for the family had announced the arrival of a baby girl. Her eyes as brown as the chocolate cake, and her hair as sandy as her mothers. Her big eyes oped to the sight of her grandmother, and a huge gummy grin showed. Looking down at the little wolf, Anita Dalm pushed up her glasses and laughed along with the crowd.     "She sure does smile a lot," Anita said running a hand through her short grey hair. The mother looked up and still smiled, rocking back and forth to make sure to keep the baby calm. "She certainly does," She said. Walking away, Anita ran into her son. With his dark brown hair and boyish charms, he could have been the hottest guy in the land so far, but he never let his looks get to him, as far as most people know. As the night continued to go on, people started to leave and bid their congratulations to the couple. Anita walked out the door and down the road to her own home. Opening the door, she turned on the light, hung up her coat, and took in a deep breath.      Its been a long time since a child was born in her husbands family. Together they had 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. Nearly 80 years herself, it was hard to live without most of them. Her husband died of cancer about 10 years ago, and living without a mate was a tough one, most didn't really survive. She had too, she just had to for her children, or her son, his wife and her new granddaughter. She slowly took off her glasses and grasped the bridge of her nose. She was slowly fading day in and day out, she wouldn't last much longer on her own, with or without her sons help.      She couldn't rely on him for however much long she had, he had a family now, a future and maybe more. She scrunched up her nose and decided to go to bed, walking over to her bedroom, she looked along as the photos lined the walls. Old family photos, ones from marriages, but most are of her children when they where little. Them around the tree, them dancing in shows and playing music. Those where good times until the spring took them.     She walked into the bedroom and quickly changed into a nightgown. Her head started to fill with memories of her kids, and the tears just prickling along the edges. The edge of her bed sunk in as she sat down and drank it all in:                             The spring had just started, the snow melted. Libby put on her favorite summer gown, even though it wasn't warm enough. Ryan, Jackson, and Luis all ran after their little sister, for fear she would do something dumb or stupid. There being no ice on the ground, it was fine to run on the cement. Laughter could be heard from the kitchen as Anita started to lunch for the kids. "I'm gonna marry the prince one day," Libby would say at the top of her lungs before she would play princess. Anita started to laugh as she thought about being mother-in-law to the king. It would be a story to tell her grandchildren and even her mother when she dies. "Ryan, you arnt supposed to shift!"Luis screamed. Being the oldest, Luis was always watching out for his younger siblings, especially since Libby and Ryan where twins. Both of them causing a ruckus all the time. Anita looked out the window and saw Ryan running around in his wolf form, being the first to shift meant he got to taunt everyone, and he loved to taunt his older brothers. "Ryan, thats enough,"His father screamed from just inside the door. "But Dad," He wined as he shifted back to his human form and grabbed his clothes to change back into. "No butts young man, you know how your mother feels about you doing that without a reason,"He stated. Ryan through back his head and continued to play with his siblings. "I swear to god those kids are more like you everyday, John,"Anita said washing some lettuce. Her husband came around her and planted a kiss on her cheek, she started to giggle and smile. Some of her chestnut hair fell in her face and  she just tried to maneuver it. John stopped her and wrapped her hair up in a super messy bun, but just tight enough so that it wouldn't get in her face. He smiled then went out to make sure none of the children got into trouble, again. Anita finished making turkey with salad. Her children where growing day by day, and they needed to eat more so then her or her husband, especially with their metabolisms as wolves. Walking to the door, she noticed that her kids where around something. Her face began to worry and running off to the door and swinging it open, she noticed John carrying Libby with him, her eyes red from crying. "What happened?" She asked as they walked Libby in and placed her on the couch. "I think she is shifting," Ryan said, the last one to run in. Libby started to twist and turn, her body aching all over, before they knew it, her bones started to shift and then her fur started to come in. Within about 2 mins, she was a complete wolf, and the last one to shift. Looking down, Anita picked up the little white wolf, which was odd since she was the only one who looked anything like her mother. Everyone else was black and brown, like their father. Holding her close, the little pup looked into the eyes of her mother and started to jump and run around with her brothers in tow. Anita walked over to her husband who sat in a chair and watched as the kids ran around the house. Eventually Libby shifted back and fell asleep. The rest of the family ate and ate but left just enough for the little she-wolf.      That was a time to remember. It was one of their best days as a family. A few moths later, an epidemic hit the surrounding areas, mainly effecting werewolf children. All of their children fell ill, most weren't too worry about it until the illness became fatal. After the first child had died, more and more started up. Not everyone who got the disease survived, adult and child alike. Libby, Luis, and Jackson all died, leaving Ryan the only one to survive and people wondering why?      Some thought that it was due to unfaithfulness of Anita towards her husband, but Ryan and Libby's blood matched their fathers perfectly, and if one twin survived, why didn't the other one? It was still a mystery to this day why Ryan survived and her other children didn't. While suffering loss is a big one, she knew nothing would help anyone if they just grieved and didn't try to move on and keep the fallen in their hearts and let them live on forever in another aspect. Through stories, photos, laughter, and such.          Although it hurt to remember such painful memories as well as good ones, she needed to be strong, She had a family again. A son, daughter-in-law and now a baby granddaughter. And she would want just as much time with her grandmother as much as her kids wanted it.      "Don't you worry,John, I wont be joining you anytime soon without stories of out little girl," She said to a wedding photo of her and her husband.  "Our sweet little Katie." ----------------------------------     "Ryan, dear. Is your mother doing alright?" Virginia asked. Ryan turned to see his beautiful wife in a peach gown that went all the way to the floor. Her bangs pulled out of her face and her smile as bright as ever.     "Don't worry love, she is doing well. I just got a letter saying she will be here for the anniversary," He said. He rubbed the sides of Virginia's arms as an effort to try and sooth her.It seemed to work since she relaxed and nodded her head.      "Is grandma here yet, Poppa?" A little voice asked as she ran around the side of the wall. She hugged the door frame to her parents bedroom. Ryan looked down at his daughter. She looked a lot more like her mother then anyone else in their entire family, but in a way, he could see and even hear a little bit of Libby in her.      "She is on her way my little muffin," Her mother said picking her up. Nearly 5 years old, Katie didn't way as much as most children her age, but man did she eat a whole lot. Ryan came up to her and started to tickle her stomach. She giggled and laughed, until a knock on the door stopped all that.     "Grandma!" She screamed. Jumping from her mothers arms, she ran to the door and practically jumped on her grandmother as she walked through the door. "Katie, dear. Its not polite to jump," Her grandmother scolded her. Katie got off and looked to the floor as she spoke with a soft voice,"I'm sorry grandma." Anita could stay mad at her with that face.     "Alright deary, come in for a hug,"Anita said kneeling down. Katie ran into her arms with happiness and joy. Patting down her granddaughters hair, Anita just loved the moments with her. Savoring each one until the day she dies.      Hearing a cough from behind them, they watched as Virginia was hacking up a storm, which was odd due to the fact that she usually didn't have one. Anita held onto Katie as Ryan ran over to his wife to help her sit down. Running to the kitchen, he grabbed her some water and she slowly drank it.     Soon the coughing stopped and she breathed easier. "I'm sorry about that, I must have in-took too much air,"She said.  Handing the glass to her husband, she stood up slowly, and everything seemed to go back to normal, for all but Katie.      She didn't know what was going on, but she noticed a little twinge when her mother stood up and the smile she gave looked a little forced then anything. She didn't know why it bothered her, she was only 5. Putting on her coat, she held her mothers hand, watching her father helping Anita to the cemetery.  --------------------------     Placing a flower on the marker, Virginia stood back. Anita felt her tears start to well up. "Don't be sad grandma,"Katie said. She leaned  on her grandmas side as her eyes went to her grandfathers grave sight. 15 years to this day he died, She may have never truly known him in life, but she knew he was important.      *cough*cough*cough* Victoria started to sputter again. Only when she pulled her sleeve away from her mouth, there was blood all over it. Katie's eyes got bigger and bigger as she saw the stain on her mothers white coat. Virginia suddenly started to get blurry eyed, her last image was Ryan catching her before she fell and Katie struggling to get out of her grandmothers grasp     "Mommy!" Katie screamed.      When she woke again, she was home, her blood stained coat on the door hanger, the pack doctor on the side of the bed. She felt weak more then anything. But she couldn't shake the look of her daughter trying to get to her, but struggling and crying, and she couldn't do a thing about it.      The doctor noticed she was awake, "Mrs. Dalm, your family was very worried about you," He said. She nodded her head. Looking away and towards the floor of their bedroom, she slowly asked,"Is it what my mother had?"     The doctor nodded his head, although she wasn't looking, she took the silence as a confirmation and started to cry. "I had just hope that it would have skipped me, or at least let me stay a little longer," She said. "Would you like me to tell your family?" He asked.      "They already knew the possibility when it came to the wedding. But please," She said. He nodded his head and walked into the family room, closing the door behind him. Ryan and Anita got up. Katie wanting to join was pushed back down on the couch.     Looking up she saw them talking to the doctor, Anita with tears in her eyes and Ryan with a horrid look to his face. The doctor looked sympathetic and worried when he saw Katie sitting down."You may see her now," He said. Ryan looked to the little girl and felt the tears roll down his face.      "Whats wrong Poppa?" she asked.      "Mommy, is gonna go to sleep for a long while sweetie, and it just makes me sad to see her go," He said. Katie turned her head sideways and looked over at the door which held her mother.      "Why does she have to go to sleep?" She asked feeling scared. Ryan looked up at his mother who was slowly shaking. "She hasn't been feeling well for a while," He said, more tears flowing. Katie watched as he stood up and took her hand. He walked her too the door and she went in.      Her mother looked so frail, and so weak. She turned to her father , he nodded his head. She kept walking until she was face to face with her mother. She watched as Virginia reached out and placed a palm on Katie's cheek, feeling the small invisible tears trickle down. "I know we haven't had as much time as I wanted, but I want you to know that I love you, more then anything in this world," She started. "Even Poppa?" Katie asked turning around. Virginia smiled and started to laugh a little. "Yes, even more then Poppa. *cough*cough*" She stuttered. Katie started to cry.          "Just know that I will always be with you," She said grabbing a necklace. It was a little golden heart on a chain. "This was your grandmothers, then mine. It is passed throughout the family, and although I couldn't give it to you when you are 18, I want to give it to you now, before its too late,"She mentioned. Katie looked confused as her mother placed the chain around her neck. Before she could ask what she meant, Virginia started to cough up even more blood.     "Mamma. MOMMY!!!!" She screamed as the doctor came in and her father picked her up and placed her in the room, closing the door as he checked in on his wife. The tears kept streaming and streaming. She grasped the little heart on her neck and just could help but feel pain in her chest.     'Is this what Grandma and Poppa felt like when they lost my uncles and auntie, and even grandpa? I hate the way this feels'     Within the next 2 hours, Virginia had passed away, surrounded by her husband and mother-in-law. She went out with a calm and peaceful smile. She couldn't feel much better.     "At least she went out with those that she loves," Anita said, placing her hand on Ryan's shoulder. He looked up at her and she could see the pain in his face. "What am I gonna do Mom," She asked. "I dont know dear, But you and I are all Katie has now. We must think of something, especially for this little girl, at such a young age to loose her mother," She said looking towards the door, knowing for a fact that Katie was up against it.      Ryan looked the same way. He stood up and slowly opened the door to find his little girl with more tears in her eyes that he cared to say. He went down to his knees and she ran to him wanting nothing more then a hug. Looking up at the bed, she could see her mothers body, lifeless on the bed. She pulled back and looked at her fathers tear filled eyes.      "Its ok, Poppa. Mamma isn't hurting anymore. She is all better," She said.Ryan nodded his head and brought her back in for a hug.      "We will be ok, Mamma. I promise," She said     'I believe in you, Muffin'
