Chapter 1 Nice to Meet You Again
The constant bombardment outside caused the entire infirmary to shake. Christine Ygritte had her head down and concentrated on stitching up a wounded soldier. Her hair was smeared with sweat and blood, while her face looked messy. No one could have guessed that she was the gorgeous eldest daughter of Mayor Ygritte, the apple of the Ygrittes' eye. The heat and chaos did not disrupt her surgery. As a doctor, she was responsible for healing the wounded and rescuing the dying. She was the leader of the medical corps of Cheagard at the time. She was obliged to dash ahead. Bang! The shabby front door was kicked open. About four soldiers carrying a stretcher burst into the infirmary, mud and blood on their bodies. The soldier on the stretcher had lost blood that stained the ground. The soldier walking at the front was tall and upright with delicate facial features, looking majestic. "Who's in charge?" He asked. Christine replied coldly, "I am." He strode up to Christine, pressed the gun to her forehead, and said, "Bring him back to life right now. Or I'll bury you with him." Without flinching, she looked at him calmly and said, "Are you going to let me operate on him in that posture?" The man, with the gun in his hand, froze slightly, then pulled back his weapon quickly. This girl. Her face. Looks so familiar. Christine could not notice the expression on the man's face. She coldly uttered two words, "Get out." The soldiers in the infirmary all opened their mouths in horror. No one had ever spoken to their General in such a tone. This girl was getting herself into trouble. However, Ryon, the "horrifying general", did not seem to be offended. To everyone's surprise, he smiled and said, "Okay." With that, he walked out with his men. Christine immediately asked her assistants to carry the wounded soldier to the operating table, "Quick! Hemostat. Blood pack." "Doctor Ygritte, his pulse is too weak. He seems to have stopped breathing." Christine did not hesitate to perform CPR on him. From afar, Ryon squinted at the woman who had yelled at him. She was trying her best to do CPR. Blood sprayed on her fingers and face, staining her white shirt, but Christine didn't seem to care about it. At this moment, she ruled the O.R like a real queen. The will. The power. The imposing manner. The surgery on this soldier was not completed until midnight. The soldier was rescued from death and transferred back home. Christine heaved a great sigh of relief. She walked out of the O.R., gazing down and cleaning the blood on her hands. Out of nowhere, someone handed her a towel. She looked up and was about to say thank you but fell silent when she saw the straight face in front of her. His infinite eyes were too sharp that they looked deep into her. It made her feel as if the man behind those eyes was going to take something over. To be honest, she had an awful first impression of this man. This vulgar, brutal, and oppressive man. He lit a cigar, opened his mouth, exhaled a puff of smoke at her, and said, "Remember my name, Ryon Wyndell." Ryon Wyndell, the military legend, the well-known newcomer, the powerful magnate in the political arena. Words on the street, this man was of humble birth but had joined the army since twelve. He had been active in the military at the age of sixteen and led a strong and elite team at twenty. After several rounds of promotion, he was now, the General of Cheagard, at the age of only 27. This man had never lost one of his battles. He was stern with people but stern with himself even more. His bluster even intimidated his father. Nobody had ever dared to go against him. Christine choked on the smoke he exhaled. Her face flushed because of her constant coughing, appearing to be cute and charming. She tossed the used hand towel to him with all her might. Just as they brushed past, he suddenly grabbed her wrist. She subconsciously tried to reach for the scalpel in her pocket. If he dares to bully me, I'll definitely fight with him. "Thank you for saving my soldier." She murmured, "It's just my job. General Wyndell, you don't need to thank me for that." He used one hand to pin her arms behind her and whispered, "It's been long." She looked at him in confusion. It was indeed a face that she found familiar. But she couldn't remember who he was. At the same moment, some people from the medical corps approached them. He quickly loosened her arms, causing her to stagger back. Then, he wrapped his arms around her waist, forming a very romantic position. She tried to kick his knee with her foot, but she could not move her legs because of his long and slender legs were on hers. He rubbed his hand repeatedly over the corners of her soft lips and finally kissed them. She stared at him in disgust, but he smiled with something clearly in his mind. After releasing her, he said, "You'll see me again." And then he left. Christine's lips were tainted with the faint smell of tobacco. She turned back to the sink and scrubbed her lips with cool water so hard that they almost peeled. The medical corps doctors and nurses who saw this scene gathered around Christine. These people all came from different cities and didn't know each other well, so they expressed their guesses casually. "Christine, is General Wyndell the man you are looking for?" "How can that be? Christine is looking for her fiancé." "So I still have a chance to date General Wyndell? I admire him so much. Look at him. He's so handsome and works so hard. I heard that he rose from the bottom to the top in the military. " "Oh, come on. General Wyndell never dates. He is like an ice man. Even if he does, how can he go out with ordinary girls like us?" Christine forced a smile and turned to leave. She leaned back wearily on a bench in the hallway, opened her wallet, and caressed the photo in it. The photo showed a handsome man and a beautiful lady, both smiling broadly. The man was Marcus Blair, her fiancé, and her childhood crush. For as long as she could remember, she knew she was going to be Marcus's wife in the future because the Ygritte family was bound to marry one of the boys in the Blair family. Christine is the eldest daughter and the most suitable one. She does like Marcus. For one reason, their familiarity bred fondness; for another, she thought that Marcus was a good candidate since she had to marry someone eventually. He was good-looking, elegant, and gentle. On top of that, he was not arrogant because of his famous family. Instead, he treated her exceptionally well. Christine's half-sister, Vanesa Ygritte, had jealousy of Christine's engagement to Marcus. On the other hand, Christine's father often threatened her that even if she didn't marry Marcus Blair, she would marry another member of the Blair family... or even marry someone she had never met at all. In that case, she preferred to marry someone she knew. They were to have their wedding ceremony in two months, but Marcus was nowhere to be found. All she knew was that he hadn't been in contact with anyone for six months since he had fought in the battle between the countries of Cheagard and Darhold. Even the Blair family had absolutely no idea where he was. The Blair family had to keep Marcus's disappearance a secret as Blair was the hot candidate for president of Cheagard. Christine enrolled in the medical corps with the wedding date approaching, hoping to find Marcus. The pattern of the General's Office at the barracks was simple. All the furnishings were black here, including the curtains, making people shiver from seeing them. A pile of photos was placed on Ryon's desk. The girls in the pictures were all apparently Christine... from her childhood, teenage years, and even now. The photos had captured her crying, laughing, liveliness, mischievousness, and gentleness. Stroking the beautiful eyebrows of the girl in the photo, he smiled with his brooding eyes even more deep-set. He said, "Since you came to me of your own accord, don't blame me for what happens in the future." The corners of his mouth curved up. He immediately called the staff at X Block's dungeon, which imprisoned people who had committed felonies or were about to be lynched by dignitaries. "Let Marcus go and get him back to his family as fast as possible." "But, General Wyndell, the Keyon family said they would only cooperate with you only if this man is held in custody. What if it makes Vice President Keyon unhappy?" "Just Shut up And do what I asked you to do." He pondered for a moment and added, "Also, bring our brothers here tomorrow." On the phone with Ryon, Carlin Frankel immediately became exuberant, "General, is there a new mission? Bravo! Gosh, I'm so excited. We've got another great opportunity to use our muscles." "I'm going to propose to a girl." Carlin drew a swift breath. Then he said slowly, "What..."
