Prologue
Katala  (Katala ten years old- Noctis eleven years old)     The girls pushed me until I fell on my side so hard that it hurt. I started crying in pain and the Beta rolled her eyes at me, crossing her arms over her chest and looking back at the other girls that surrounded us. I’d only been trying to play with them and I asked politely if I could join the circle. I didn’t know what I'd done wrong. I dried my tears with the back of my arm and looked up to the Beta.     “I’m sorry,” I said between hiccups, “I didn’t want to ruin your game.”     “You are always such a crybaby Katala,” said the Beta, whose name was Mila, “that’s why we don’t want to play with you.”     “You are just a stupid Omega!” said another.     “A weak Omega.”     “The Alphas always come sniffing after you!” said another girl from the group and they all nodded at me, sharing identical looks of disgust. I’ve been trying so hard not to cry but I couldn’t help it. I really couldn’t understand why they didn’t like me. I was always kind to them and shared all of my toys. I was always quiet when they were speaking and only talked when I was asked direct questions. I didn’t know what I’ve done wrong!     “We don’t like you!” said another girl, who twisted her mouth in distaste at me. Encouraged by the other girls she moved closer to me and raised her hand as if to hit me. I gaped at her, not knowing what to do, not understanding why they were being so mean.     A long shadow hid the sun and, trembling I gawked at the tall boy that had stepped in front of me. I knew him as I knew the palm of my hand. The tallest boy with the blackest hair. Muscular and well built, brawny. I felt my own heartbeat drum painfully faster against my ribcage. Noctis.      All the girls stepped back in fear. Mila visibly shook in terror and with a scream she ran away. The other girls followed her fast, all equally terrified by Noctis. I sincerely couldn’t understand why everyone reacted like that around him. Noctis was quiet and sometimes when he was mad, strange things happened, but he was always  kind to me. He was also a great big brother to Aros and Kun. At times I wished for him to be my own brother. At least then the girls will accept to be my friends in fear of angering him.     When Noctis turned around his black eyes looked bottomless. His brows knitted while he  studied my form and then he moved closer, offering me a hand. I accepted his offering right away, letting him push me up until I was standing. In silence Noctis crossed his hands at his back while a vein popped out in his neck. He didn’t look happy.     “Where are your guards Katala?” he asked me in that deep voice of his that always seemed to turn huskier at the end. A flush crept on my face while I scratched the back of my neck. I lost my guards an hour ago when I was playing hide and seek with my cousin Valnira. And then I’d heard the voices in my head and had grown dristacted. One thing led to another and I ended up finding the girls and wanted to play with them.  I opened my mouth and then closed it. At times I wished I had Valnira’s gift to tell lies but I didn’t. I couldn’t lie at all. His expression closed up, never a good sign with Noctis.     “Katala,” he said with a shake of his head, as if I should know better.     “I just wanted to play!” I said fast, following him close when he started walking in the direction to the palace, “and the voices were telling me I needed to meet my friends in the forest and…”     “What?” his growl made me stop and bit my lips. I really shouldn’t have said that.      “It was the good voices this time,” I whispered  in a small whimper and Noctis’s nostrils flared in irritation. He took me by my arm and forced me to follow his fast pace. We turned around the corner of the royal gardens and in the distance I saw the tall profile of my father. Oh no. I dug on my heels and tried to turn in the opposite direction but my father’s green eyes zeroed on me right then.      “Uncle Talon,” called Noctis and my father nodded at the boy. A line appeared between his brows while he looked from me to Noctis. In three short steps he was by my side, inspecting me from head to toes and sniffing me.      “ Where are your guards? Did you lose them? What were you thinking, Katala?” he asked me, taking me by my shoulders and shaking me a bit for emphasis. I opened my mouth and was about to tell him the story through my own perspective when Noctis again interfered, ruining my chances of getting away from this entire situation unpunished.     “She was following the voices,” said Noctis, gritting his teeth at me, “again.”     “What?” my father shook my shoulders one more time, his face looking a little paler than before. He really didn’t like hearing about the voices that whispered in my ear. But what could I do? Ignore them? “Katala we talked about this. You are not supposed to lose your guards. They are there to protect you. And we agreed that you will not pay attention to the voices.”     “But mom says that hearing the voices is not wrong. That she hears them too,” I said with a frown and my father rolled his eyes to the ceiling.     “Yes, well, your mommy and I will have a conversation about that tonight. For now promise me that you will stay in the palace and not go out, no matter what the voices say,” I felt my eyes flooding with tears for the second time that morning. What was so wrong about me? What I was doing so wrong that everyone got mad at me? My father shook me again, this time harder, “answer me Katala!”     “I promise,” I said softly and my father hugged me, gently tucking me to his chest and getting me up. He halted before moving and looked down at Noctis.     “Thank you prince Noctis,” he said with pride, patting his shoulder, “you are doing a great job protecting your little sister.”     “Yes, my little sister,” murmured Noctis, focusing his black eyes on me. I waited until my father turned his back to the prince to stick out my tongue at Noctis. I mouthed the words I hate you and to my surprise Noctis smiled at me.      A big smile brightened his face. A smile I’ve never seen in his face before.     And for the first time in my life I truly felt hate.      I couldn’t believe I wanted to have a brother like Noctis!     I pushed my forehead against my father’s neck and pulled softly at his hair so he could purr for me. He laughed a bit and purred gently, like he did every night before tucking me for bed. I fell asleep right after that but the violence of my hate for Noctis didn’t lighten one bit.     It never did.
