A voice said from behind her in the silence of the examination hall. "Shut up!" She shot back. "Pretty please...” After a pause with a calculating gleam in his eyes he added, “I’ll give you a treat of whole tub of dark chocolate sundae.” Hearing that her mouth filled with water and she was even contemplating for a second to help him out for the treat he promised but then she remembered what he'd done in the assembly and discarded the idea of helping him. "I don't know that answer." She replied under her breath. "You're lying," He whispered as he knew too well that she learned even the small stars that defines difficult terms at the bottom of the page of a book. "I swear if you don't...” "Then what?" She half shouted and half whispered back. "Fine. Tell me the sixth one." He said tight lipped. "I don't know that one also." She knew it as well as the other questions but she won't tell him. It's his fault that he doesn't know the answers because these were the same questions during which he was eating her lunch without telling her. Food thief. She was lost in her thoughts when a hand came from behind and snatched her answer sheet off her table and put the other one. “What the.." "Ssh... Otherwise Sister Stewart will know that you are cheating." He sounded smug and when she turned, she saw that s**t eating grin on his face. He was cute with black hairs falling on his forehead, she knew that he tried to tame them every morning before coming to school but they didn't stay exactly same and she was glad for it. She looked in green sparkling eyes, amusement clear in his eyes as he smiled and there it is, the dimple in his chin. It appeared only when he smiled and it left her speechless most of the time but thank god this time it didn't as she remembered what he'd done and scowled up at him. "But... I... I didn't." "Yeah, I know. She doesn't." He gestured towards Sister Stewart, their examiner for today. "I will kill you." She hissed at him as she tried to snatch her sheet back. "No. Don't..." His eyes went wide as he looked over her shoulder. She turned and was pretty much sure what she’d see. And right, Sister Stewart was standing in front of her, eyebrows raised. She regarded them both for a second when both of them didn't say anything she asked, “Care to explain?" "He did it." "She did it." They both said at the same time.  "Kasak? Ketan?" "He first snatched my paper," Kasak said by a way of explanation."Because it was my paper," He said very seriously. Kasak looked at him with her mouth hanging open. How could he sound so calm when lying? He was the one who snatched her paper first. “He’s lyi...” “I’m not lying." He interrupted her before she can finish. “Sister, you can see this is my paper." He held up his paper which she'd put while taking hers from his table. "Kasak." Sister said her name in a way that it was clear she believed him. With a tsk-tsk sound she took her sheet and walked to the podium. “I won't be returning it to you. You can go out if you want." Gathering her pens and pencils, she said low and threatening, “You'll pay for it." Ketan watched her walk out of the class literally stomping her foot like a five year old. He bit back a smile knowing too well that her devious mind was probably planning something to get back at him and he couldn't wait to find out. So, he submitted his answer sheet and walked out of the class. Outside the class, a pretty blue box was lying in his path as he turned for the playground. As soon as he picked the box two soft little hands pressed on his head. He smiled knowing too well to whom those hands belong but his smile was short lived. He narrowed his eyes on the girl standing beside him with pretty big blue eyes and two pigtails, smiling at him that smile which can lit the whole school if need be, showing her perfect white teeth. “Thank you for the box. Bye." She took the box and then took a step back. He was so dazzled by her that he didn't realize right then what she'd done. Laughter of all the students nearby brought him back to reality. He looked around him and realized that they all were laughing at him only then he felt the sticky goo dropping on his shoulder and touched his head. “What the hell!?" His hand came back with smashed banana mixed with some juice. “You wouldn’t dare..!” He shouted at her retreating back. “Wouldn’t I?” was her only reply as she ran away from him, laughing. He couldn’t help the answering smile on his own face.   Three years earlier… “What is the matter with you?” She screeched. For the first time she was hurt by what he did. They’d always done lots of s**t to each other to get a rise from the other one but this time, it was beyond the line. She was so excited to go out on a date with Karan. He was cute, smart and one of the popular boy of school with his good humor and charm. He was also her senior but she knew he was not a bad guy. She glared at the bane of her existence. He’d been fun to prank with, over the years they’d laughed at each other, they’d joked and occasionally they also had sat side by side taking care of each other. She knew it had been hard for him at home. His father being an alcoholic and his mother, b***h, left them just because they couldn’t afford her demands and desires. She felt bad for him and she cared for him but he couldn’t use all that like an excuse to behave like a self-serving and self absorbing prick. She waited for him to reply, to give some kind of reasonable answer for what he did. She breathed a long breath to hold back her words. She wanted to lash out, she wanted to hurt him back, this time he’d done the unthinkable. This was beyond their childish games. He’d all but announced to whole school that she’d fantasies of tying boys and torturing them for getting off. How could he, when she hasn’t even seen a single porn, for god sakes! He just stared back, face blank. Then slowly he leaned in like he’s going to whisper in her ear but he didn’t. Of course, he didn’t. He said loud enough that she had no doubt even students peeking from outside the class heard him. “Why, are you that horny to get what you can? If you want, I can help you with it.” He suggested with a smirk. She was so disgusted with him that she didn’t think twice before letting her hand fly and hitting him right across his cheek. His head whipped sideways by the force of her slap but she didn’t get a chance to even turn when he pinned her to the wall. His eyes turned nearly black, the muscle in his jaw ticked and when she tried to leave he tightened his hold on her wrists and pinned them above her head. It was enough to make her afraid. And despite of herself she was. He leaned down so close that their lips almost touched. “Think before you react. May be you won’t get any reprieve the next time. And I believe in giving what I get.” The threat was clear that next time he would retaliate in a kind but she didn’t care, she was beyond hurt. Her wrist ached from where he’d held them and most of her heart ached to see him like this. Her eyes stung from holding back the flood of tears that threatened to spill over. “Go to hell.” She whispered vehemently. Any other girl or boy would have thought twice before retorting back but not her, she was the only one who could so daringly, defiantly and stubbornly, engage in battle of wills with him. And she was the only one who got to go her merry way unscathed. And despite his dislike for everything she was and for everything she does to him, he liked that in her. He thought about her words she’d spoken and proceeding them came his mother’s words. You are not enough. You’ll never be. He heard her and also the words she didn’t speak. She tried to hide the tremors in her voice but he heard them too. He closed his eyes briefly and smiled cynically and thought to himself that how could he go there when he’s already in hell. He saw her walking out of the class, students whispered around her commenting on her, boys' crude comments for giving them a chance. One of them, Rajat, said loud and clear for all to hear, “Take me baby, I want you any way you like to give it to me.” Other students laughed with him. And he saw red.He stalked to him, grabbing him by the throat he bit out, “Say even a word to her and you may not be able to say your own name and if you want it that much then who I’m to deny you.” And saying that he punched him, across his face getting the satisfied crack of the other boy’s nose.
