It surrounded the sword like a veil. Slowly the form of a unicorn emerged from the dark and mist. It was small, barely the size of a cart pony. Like a pony, its mane and tail were long and thick. It had a short horn, but long ears. The unicorn’s nostrils flared, breathing a strange vapor, and a voice spoke, “Greetings, Your Highness.” “I remember you,” Jaron said. “You were here that night.” “Yes,” the beast bobbed its head. The voice seemed a part of it and separate at the same time. The creature didn’t speak so much as the voice emanated from it. “It is time to test your worth.” “My worth?” Jaron blinked. “Yes,” the small unicorn looked at the sword, lodged in the crystalline rock beside it. “Take your father’s sword, young Prince, if you can.” Jaron clenched his jaw.
