“Don’t overthink it, Hazel. Just sign the divorce papers so we can all move on. It is as easy as that.”I clench my fists, fighting the tears welling in my eyes. Turning away from my mother-in-law, I confront my so-called husband. “Luke?” I called again, "Luke? Can you not hear me?"He responds nonchalantly, “Yes? Can’t you see what’s happening? You can read, can’t you? Just sign the papers. I don’t have time for your nonsense.”I look at the man I once cherished, questioning where it all went wrong. *********Hazel Orion gives her kidney to her husband, Luke Smith, against her parents ' wish. This act of her’s, causes them to disown her and vow never to have any tie with her. Hazel accepts her fate and continues standing by the side of her beloved husband, taking care of him, her company and his parents, while he healed.Unfortunately, she developed a complication, a month after the surgery. This causes her to fall sick and be hospitalized. Hazel stayed bedridden for a month and finally saw the true colors of the one she risked her life for. She had no option but to manage the ill treatments meted out on her by the one she loved most.On the day of her discharge, Mrs. Eleanor(her mother-in-law )and her husband, Mr. Smith, came into her ward with their son, Luke, and a girl she knew. They introduced Ruby as Luke's wife-to-be, the one who’d give them grandchildren and take care of the Smith family since she was unable to. Chapter 1: You're Weak And You Might Die Soon
HAZEL’S POV “I don’t realize my strength until I bear the burden of a marriage fated to collapse.” I snap back to reality upon hearing a noise at my door. Gradually, I straighten up and wait to see who has unexpectedly barged in. A faint smile crosses my face when I see my mother-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor. “Mum? You’re here.” I shift upright and adjust the blanket while glancing at the somber expressions of my husband, Luke, and his father, Mr. Smith. Mrs. Eleanor forces a smile. “How are you, Hazel? Hope you're responding to treatment?” “Hazel?” I repeat inwardly, masking my disbelief. She hasn’t called me by my name since the day we first met. As the marriage progressed, she quickly switched to calling me “my dearest.” Nodding stiffly, I respond, keeping my eyes on Luke, “I’m okay, just some minor hurt here and there, apart from that; I'm fine.” Luke slouches on the hospital couch, showing no concern or interest in our conversation. Redirecting my attention to Mrs. Eleanor, I notice a change in her demeanor. I wonder what I could have done to offend her. Without warning, she steps closer, stops a few feet away, pulls out a document, and hands it to me. With a smug look, she locks her gaze on mine and says, “Here you go, Hazel. Luke has already signed on the left. Just add yours so we can end this ridiculous marriage. There's no need to waste anymore time.” Stunned and hurt, I rise unsteadily and glare at her. “What’s the meaning of this? Make me understand.” She tosses her chestnut hair to one side, reapplies her lipstick, and stares at me indifferently. “Don’t overthink it, Hazel. Just sign the divorce papers so we can all move on. It is as easy as that.” I clench my fists, fighting the tears welling in my eyes. Turning away from her, I confront my so-called husband. “Luke?” I called again, "Luke? Can you not hear me?" He responds nonchalantly, “Yes? Can’t you see what’s happening? You can read, can’t you? Just sign the papers. I don’t have time for your nonsense.” He adds, "s**t, you're so annoying." I look at the man I once cherished, questioning where it all went wrong. Mrs. Eleanor leans in, her hands gripping my shoulders, and whispers, “Let it go, my dearest. Let it go, you need to be free.” “Don’t call me that!” I shove her hands off angrily and collapse into the bed, shattered. Suddenly, another woman enters the room dramatically. “Mum! Dad! Luke, my love! There you are—I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Mrs. Eleanor spreads her arms wide, welcoming the newcomer. “Ruby, my dearest, we’ve been waiting for you. Glad to have you here.” They share a quick embrace, their affection evident. “I’m here now, Mum. I'm here for you.” Ruby says warmly. She glances at Luke, then turns to Mrs. Eleanor with a distressed expression. “Why does my sweetheart look so upset?” Ruby casts a venomous glare my way before redirecting her focus to Mrs. Eleanor. “Is she the cause?” I watch as Mrs. Eleanor laughs wickedly, then sneers at me. “She’s nothing but leftovers—a useless nobody. Don’t worry about her.” Furious, I retort, “Excuse me? What is all this nonsense? I won’t stand here and let you insult me! What's all these for?” Ruby approaches with a smirk. “You can hardly stand as it is.” She then strides to Luke’s seat, drapes herself over him, and wraps her arms around his neck. Luke holds her by the waist, resting his face on her shoulder as they whisper and giggle together. My world feels like it’s crumbling. Seeking answers, I summon the last of my strength and turn to Mrs. Eleanor. “Why? Why the divorce?” She looks at me as though doing me a favor. “Ruby will replace you and fulfill everything you failed to do.” My brows knit in confusion. “Everything I couldn’t do?” “Yes,” she replies confidently. Scanning me from head to toe, she adds, “You’re weak, and you might not live long. How will I ever get grandchildren that way?” My head spins. “Wait—this is about grandchildren?” “Of course,” she says coldly. “And since you’re already at death’s door, I’m simplifying things for you before you go.” “You make it seem like you’re helping me, but you’re destroying me,” I whisper, tears now streaming freely. Suddenly, something clicks in my mind. I glance sharply at Ruby. “Why does she seem familiar?” “That’s because you know her,” Ruby says, standing up from Luke’s lap. She glares at me with open contempt. “Oh my God,” I murmur as realization dawns on me. “You’re Luke’s ex-girlfriend. What’s happening here?” “It’s good to see you’ve caught on,” Luke says curtly. He rises, takes Ruby’s hand, and says, “Sign the papers. We’ll return for them.” With that, they all leave me behind, treating me like discarded trash. Luke’s father casts me a final glance but exits silently. Holding my chest, I cry loudly, wondering where I went wrong. Moments later, doctors enter, noticing how I clutch my chest. They administer anesthesia, but no drug can numb this pain. No analgesic could soothe my aching heart and my affected mental health. Once they leave, I rise unsteadily and shuffle toward the balcony at the back of the hospital. Clinging to my IV stand for support, I continue until I reach the low railing of the bridge. I recall my father’s last words before he disowned me and regret giving Luke my kidney. Now, I am alone—no family, no friends, no refuge, no one to run to; and nowhere to call home. Leaning against the rail, I weep uncontrollably. Suddenly, I sense a force behind me...
