DRAMATIS PERSONAE *Among nobility in France circa the 1700s, the family name differed from the titular name (Francis de Brangelton, Comte de Tournelles). The titular name took precedence over family name. For the clarity of the narration, the family name is omitted when a titular name exists (Comte Francis de Tournelles). Even among close acquaintances, Monsieur, Madame, and Mademoiselle were commonly used in regular speech, and are abbreviated as M., Mme., and Mlle. in the written text.
