I stopped back into the book store later that afternoon. I had felt stares all day and I needed something to distract myself. I could have sworn Jackson said he was working, however I didn't see him anywhere. Instead, I went to the shelf I was on the day before and found the books he had been restocking. Blood of Ash was a book I had heard of before. it's premise was that a girl was born a vampire into a human family and she fell in love with her best friend who was a werewolf. It was a little cheesy, but I heard it was supposed to be good. I went ahead and paid for the book before heading towards home. I got three chapters in before my phone went off with a text message.
Looking at it, I didn't recognize the number. Unknown number: JACKSON KNOWS YOUR SECRET.
I texted the number back saying, Who is this?
Unknown number: YOU KNOW WHO I AM. OR AT LEAST WHO I WAS. ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED 13 YEARS AGO.
I shrieked before turning my phone off. It was super creepy and I felt like I knew the person but I couldn't think of anyone. I shook my head and laid down to go to sleep. It was probably a dumb prank anyways.
~The next day at lunch~
Jackson and Wolfe sat with us at lunch again. It was hard to not notice the similarities between Jackson and Alex. I picked at my lunch hardly listening as Wolfe talked to Lilly about something or another. Jackson kept glancing at me when he thought I wasn't looking. I glanced down at my phone again. 13 years ago. That's around when I met Alexei.
"And that's when she flung herself at our neighbor, Alex," I whipped my attention to my sister as I heard her say.
Jackson's attention immediately focused on me as I slowly and deliberately stood up and said before leaving the room, "We don't talk about Alexei, Lilly. Why would you bring that up?"
"Lilah," I heard him exclaim behind me. "Wait up!"
I glared at him and said, "Jackson, I'm not in the mood."
He gently touched my arm and said, "I take it Alexei is the one I remind you of?" I nodded. "It sounds like you two were close. I know I can't replace him, but maybe you and I could become friends like you two were. Maybe having someone that reminds you of him would be good for you?"
"Nothing is going to fix what happened. I'm never going to get better. I exist simply because if I didn't, then neither would she. There will be no friendship. Ever."
I looked at him long enough to see the devastation in his eyes before I walked away for good. I skipped the rest of my classes and went home instead. I got through several more chapters of Blood of Ash while waiting. I'm not sure what I was waiting for exactly, however it wasn't Lilly coming home with Jackson in tow.
