My Dreams
Prologue The night sky was restless, the full moon buried under dark clouds suggesting a storm. Two people were standing opposite each other on the terrace of a six-story building, their quarrel getting louder as the wind picked up around them. The first person's voice was cool and collected, and their offer appeared overly simple. "I have no trouble accomplishing what you want if you agree to what I have asked for. Deal?" The second person didn't even pause; their rage spilled forth. " Over my dead body!" Every syllable came out as incredulity and contempt. Every few seconds, lightning illuminated the heavens and momentarily showed the strain on their faces. With a manipulative tone, the first person pushed further, trying to persuade them. "Why not? This way, we both get what we desire." But the other wasn’t backing down. Shouting over the wind, they accused the first person of being greedy and callous. "I’ve never encountered anyone as selfish as you. You’d even use the ones you love to your advantage. Is this just about money? Fine, name your price, and I’ll pay it!" The offer didn’t seem to matter. The first individual disregarded it without a second thought. "I don’t want money. I want what I asked for." That simply made the other even angry. They promised not to let the greed and destruction continue. "You’ve already damaged so many lives. I won’t let you take any more, and I’m surely not giving up my affection!" Then came the revelation that wrecked all prospects of tranquility. The first person chuckled, harsh and contemptuous. "Your love? Hah! The one you call ‘your’ love has already become mine—mind, body, and soul." In a flash of wrath, the second guy lunged, seeking to deliver a punch. The two fought, their hands clutching for each other’s garments, fists flying. They fought, dangerously close to the edge of the terrace as the storm roared on, the wind shrieking through the air. Suddenly, a scream pierced through the commotion. It was noisy and full of horror. In the blink of an eye, it was over. One guy stood there, frozen in amazement, while the other had disappeared into the darkness below. The hurricane didn’t care. Lightning continued to flash, the wind howled, and shortly, the rain began to pour down, as if trying to obliterate everything that had just transpired. But for the one left standing on that terrace, life would never be the same again. Chapter 1 The scorching NYC sun beat mercilessly on my face as I dragged alongside my mother through the bustling streets. Sweat soaked my back, and with each step, my patience wore thinner. The heavy shopping bags digging into my palms served as a constant reminder of why I was enduring this unbearable heat. "Oh, come on!" I groaned, adjusting my scarf to shield my face from the relentless sun. "Why do we have to shop for groceries in this heat? Couldn't we have let Khaleesi handle it?" My mother, Grecia, shot me a look that mixed amusement with exasperation. "Iris, you know I can't trust Khaleesi with groceries. Remember the last time? She wasted all my money and brought home nearly spoiled vegetables!" I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't suppress the little smile that drew at my mouth. Though we were bickering, there was an unmistakable warmth between us. Still, the heat made me agitated and I couldn't relax. "Mumma, Could we please hurry?" I argued, moving the bags' weight from one hand to the other. "I feel as though I am melting!" But ever the deal hunter, my mother had already been sidetracked by a neighboring booth. Her eyes brightened up as she studied a set of dazzling earrings. "Look at these, Iris! They'd look so gorgeous on you!" I ignored her, pressing ahead through the crowd. That's when I noticed her—an elderly woman rocking by the side of the road, appearing as if she would faint at any moment. Without thinking, I dropped the bags and hurried to her side, catching her just before she slumped. "Please, take a seat," I said, guiding her to a nearby empty chair. "I'm so relieved you didn't pass out. Here, have some juice—it might help with your blood sugar or blood pressure. Don't worry, I'll make sure you get home safely." The woman looked up at me with gratitude, her weathered face softening with relief. "Thank you so much, dear," she said, her voice trembling a bit. As I handed her the juice, I suddenly heard my mother exclaim in surprise. "Violet ?!" I stood in amazement as my mother wrapped her arms around the elderly woman tightly, tears glistening in both of their eyes. It was an unexpected reunion, yet it filled my heart with warmth despite the sweltering heat. "I'm glad to see you've found someone special, Mumma," I commented, unable to hide the amusement in my tone. We helped Violet rise to her feet and begin the brief journey to our small apartment. As we walked, my mind wandered to the connection between this frail woman and my mother. Clearly, there was a backstory there, and it made me curious. Once we stepped into our apartment, I quickly shifted into a medical mindset. Well, more like a wannabe doctor mindset. Although I had only taken the entrance exam for medical school, years of preparation had embedded certain habits in me. "Your blood pressure has dropped," I remarked while checking her vitals. "That's the reason for your dizziness. You need to take better care of yourself, Nani." My mother, always the proud mom, couldn't help but beam. "You should listen to her. She's on her way to becoming a doctor!" I felt my face heat up with embarrassment. "Mumma, come on. I've just taken the entrance exam. I haven't even received the results yet!" But Violet's eyes sparkled with pride. "What? You're going to be a doctor? That's wonderful!" I tried to minimize the situation, caught in a whirlwind of hope and anxiety about what lay ahead. "Please keep me in your prayers, Nani. They say the blessings of elders hold great power." Violet's warm smile made me feel as though her blessing could truly turn my dreams into reality. " May you excel and gain admission to the finest medical schools!" I respectfully touched her feet before retreating to my room, leaving my mother and Violet to reconnect. As I shut the door, I couldn't help but catch snippets of their conversation. "I'm truly sorry for drifting apart," my mother said, her voice heavy with sorrow. Violet's response was filled with deep emotion. "I missed you dearly, Grecia. You stopped answering my calls and moved away without a word... You’re like a daughter to me. It hurt when you vanished." I pressed my ear against the door; my curiosity intrigued me. This was a chapter of my mother's life that was completely unknown to me. "I'm sorry for losing contact with you," my mother said, her voice heavy with regret. Violet's reply was filled with heartfelt emotion. "I missed you so much, Grecia. You stopped returning my calls and moved away without telling me... You’re like my own daughter. It hurt when you disappeared."
