Salome’s POV "Did you really need another one, or did you leave all your others in Portia’s closet?" The question hung in the air, sharp and cold. Barnabas stood by the couch, his hand still hovering near the navy blue garment bag. He looked like I’d slapped him. I didn't stay to watch his reaction. I grabbed the suit, tucked it under my arm, and headed straight for the stairs. My heart hammered against my ribs, but I kept my back straight. I didn't look back, not even when I heard the heavy thud of the front door or the roar of his car engine fading down the driveway. I sank onto the edge of my bed and finally let out the breath I’d been holding. That was too close.
