I laughed, “Yeah, my wolf would feel the same way about it. You sound like her, but in a way a lot of wolves sound alike. Plus, my subconscious made you and this place up so….logically it makes sense that you sound like her. She’s in my head.” I swear the white wolf laughed. I sighed, “I hope Freya gets to run free soon. I’m worried my shift is going to be really painful. I remember the first time now. I know it’s not supposed to be in constant pain for five hours….but I remember my bones breaking and repairing as they chanted the spell. Over and over…..It was torture. Then I woke up without Freya.” I wiped a tear away. I sighed, “God, I’m crying a lot lately. I’m not usually such a crier. It’s just been really hard. Then there’s the whole family component going on. I honestly don’t know which way is up anymore. I can barely look at my grandparents. It’s easier with mom, dad, Tristan and Jason…..I haven’t even spoken to Everly really. It’s all just a mess. I’m normally much better at figuring things out. Like a lot better. Not with people though….people have never really been my strong suit. Most people think I’m odd….a beautiful dancer but odd. Or they hate me...there’s not exactly and in between there either. My friends say I’m wrong….but I’m not.” The white wolf huffed and sat down beside me.
I started to pet her back. I told her, “You have beautiful fur. It’s like snow. White and glistening….almost shimmering….anyway….I just don’t understand why everything has to be so messed up for me. I’m finally with my Xander, who does want me, and he can’t mark me. I haven’t marked him….my wolf has a point about that though. What if I had to re-mark him after I got my wolf. At the same time, what if it did work? Then I could at least see what Freya looks like.” The white wolf tilted her head at me. I sighed, “I know….she’s probably a brown wolf. I know that. Most Beta’s are….I just want to see her. Living without a wolf for four years has been horrible. She was a huge piece of me missing, and I spiraled. Not just because of the whole your dad isn’t your dad bullcrap. That was a huge piece of it….but it was also because I was literally missing half of myself. I just….it’s not fair. I know life isn’t fair, but why is mine so beyond unfair? I know people have it worse. I do…..I can’t even show my mate my back. I don’t know what to do about that.” I looked away and wiped my tears. All the words on my back would anger Xander…..the last one across my low back above my butt would make him the angriest though….I was fairly certain.
I sighed, “It’s even got a magical component to it….I mean...well..no the scars are really there….there’s just magic so that no whip marks or anything I did couldn’t alter the words. I’m pretty sure Edward and Jean can’t see them….maybe….maybe Xander couldn’t either. Maybe it’s Alpha’s…..my dad’s not an Alpha. Neither is my family. Obviously Jean is a Beta. but this was about hurting my dad…..He can’t ever see my back. None of them can. I just don’t know how to keep up a lifetime of that never happening. Freya and I will be around for centuries. Do you have any ideas?” The white wolf moved closer and put her face in my lap. I sighed, “I suppose Paige could remove the magic. No...I know she could. She’d probably be pissed I never told her there was a magical component. It’s not like magic did this to me though. That was Trevor’s knife…..then some metal letters he made and branded me with because the knife carvings on my back were too sloppy for his liking. I hate him. I hate him so much. I really want him dead.” I shook myself off the memoires of that night and Trevor. I sighed, “Alpha Peter would never have let that happen in Red Run. The kick in the teeth is that’s where I was supposed to be. Why couldn’t they just leave me alone? Because of some stupid vendetta over a guy who was doing bad things and deserved to die? I don’t even blame my dad for that….but he will blame himself. If I tell them about Alpha Ezra’s involvement…..that I know him. That he was always around threatening to take me to his pack. If they found out that Trevor is his great Nephew…..my dad will never forgive himself. It’s not far. My dad didn’t do anything wrong. He protected my aunt. I’m glad he killed that pathetic Alpha. He deserved it. The Ducant Alpha was someone like the people I fight against. He was scum and he deserved it. There’s just no way for me to win. That’s what they took from me. Peace. They took my freaking peace and everyone else’s. Telling the truth only hurts everyone. How can I do that? Isn’t there enough hurt between us all right now? Taking on the pain of others is something I’m used to. I can just keep doing that for them.” The white wolf didn’t say anything just snuggled into me.
When my eyes opened I felt arms around me that gave me tingles. I rolled over and faced Xander. His face was completely relaxed. I whispered, “You’re my mate. I’ve always protected you…..protecting you from my past is nothing to me.” I gently kissed his forehead. He instinctively pulled me closer to him. I stayed in his arms until my nerves set in. Red Run. I was going back there for the first time since that day I left. All the letters sent about what would happen if I came back flashed through my mind. I got up and started to go downstairs. Luckily, I found a bathroom and threw up in there before I threw it up on the floor. I stood shakily. I couldn’t focus on going to Red Run. Obviously. I shook myself and went into the kitchen.
I threw my hair up and started to cook. It was just after two in the morning. By four in the morning…..I had an insane amount of food. I waited until five thirty. I grabbed all the platters I could find and loaded them up. Mrs. Blanch came in, “That is power smell….are we feeding an army?” I flushed, “No...I just….make food...when I’m nervous...and…” Mrs. Blanch’s face lit with understanding. She smiled, “Well, I’ll just call some lads to help us. A young man I consider one of my own just came home, Jeffery Kruthers. He’s been on a mission.” I was surprised. Jeffrey Kruthers was Phil’s brother. He leaned more towards his Hackura side. I smiled, “He came home to meet Phil’s mate.” Mrs. Blanch laughed, “He did. I’m hoping he’ll stick around. I think...between us gals….oh hell….I know Phil called and asked Jeffrey to come home. He’s his older brother by a few months.” She laughed then added, “Miley was fit to be tied after Eric and Haley released magic right after she’d given birth to Jeffrey a week prior. She fell in love the second she heard Phil’s heartbeat though.”
I asked, “Why did Phil ask Jeffery to come home?” Mrs. Blanch smiled. A voice came from behind her, “You must be the muffin Luna...as I see these chocolate muffins I’ve heard so much about. My little brother asked me to come to help protect his mate. Seems there are douchebags that think she’s theirs. I’ll be heading to the Hackura realm after I help drop off...ummm all this food. We need more people, Grams.” She wasn’t technically his grandmother, but her daughter was mated to Jeffery’s uncle. It made sense he considered her family. Mrs. Blanch laughed, “Whatever you say.” Jeffery snorted, “I’ll be going to visit a certain prisoner of my brothers in the Hackura realm….it seems you, my muffin Luna, handed said prisoner up to him on a silver platter.” I nodded, “Yes, I always planned to get Clay to the Hackura realm. I just didn’t think Phil would be how he got there.” Jeffrey snorted, “You were going to ask Cayden then.” I nodded, “Yes. I was.” Jeffery laughed, “Oh...I can’t wait to tell him that today. I bet he’ll ask what you were going to offer in return.” I smiled, “Why would that matter now?” Jeffrey smiled, “My little brother did say that you and he would be besties. I see why.” I asked, “Why didn’t you want to be a beta?” Jeffrey smiled, “Too much paperwork for me. I’m a warrior in the pack, but I also go on longer missions.” I nodded, “Fair enough. Coffee?” I handed him a to go cup.” He smirked, “Of course. I do have beta blood after all.”
A group of ten warriors helped us carry the food down. Word must have gone around because people were waiting for us. They were chanting muffin Luna as I left. I ran back to the house. I shouldn't have, but I made more food. Freya linked, “It’s going to be ok.” I sighed, “I might throw up again if I think about it some more. So, I have to distract myself.” Eric came in first followed by several of Xander’s brothers. Eric stopped short. I turned and put out plates. I asked him quietly, “….Do you want coffee?” Eric raised an eyebrow, “Coffee would be….great.” I rambled, “I know it’s a lot of food...I’m sorry...I should’ve stopped I just…” Brady Conners spoke with his mouth full, “Never be sorry. This is so good. I’m going scouting for my mate in Nashville…..I can’t believe I just said that. Those are definitely words I never thought I’d say.” I laughed nervously. Xander popped in and I put a plate together for him. I knew it was too much food. I could run some to his allies. It wouldn’t take me long. Running! Why didn't I think of that before? Xander kissed me and all thoughts left my mind. Freya linked, “We could also try s*x too….I’m just saying is all.” Xander told me it would be ok. I’d wasted so much food on my nervous energy. I was trying to be normal, and I was not succeeding. I apologized to him, but he didn’t want my apology. He told me his mom would handle the food.
Si burst into the room claiming the food debacle was handled. That they needed more food in Red Run today. She tossed in that Avery had been cooking breakfast. I bit my lip. Avery preferred cooking lunch or dinner. She didn’t like cooking breakfast. Si shoved Xander out of the room. She smiled at me, “To the shower. Let’s go.” I sighed. I caught sight of my back in the mirror as I took my clothes off. I traced the words. I asked, “Do you think Xander would see it? Your dad and Edward didn’t notice.” Sierra snorted, “I think your Xander notices everything about you. He won’t think less of you.” I nodded and got in the shower. I quickly washed my hair. I found a hair dryer in the cabinet that was clearly for me. It was red. Once my hair was dried. Sierra fixed it while I did my makeup. She showed me my dress. I smiled, “That’s….so Addison.” Sierra laughed, “We are going retro.” I smiled, “Of course we are.” I quickly put on my dress. I gripped the sink as a wave of nerves hit me. Sierra rubbed my back, “It’s going to be ok.” I nodded, “This is for Addison. I can do this for her.” Sierra frowned, “If you aren’t ready….Ads will understand.” I shook my head, “It’s just a place…..it had trees, dirt, and grass…..houses….I’ve been in a lot of places like that.” Sierra sighed, “It’s not the same.” It wasn’t. I just wished that it was.
We headed downstairs. The closer we got to the bottom of the stares I thought I could feel my heartbeat in my ears. I relaxed a little when Xander pulled me into him, but I was beyond nervous. Si was shooting worried looks my way. Cassie showed up and pulled me away from Xander. That wasn’t going to work for me. I needed him next to me. I couldn’t do this not next to him….or in his general vicinity. I closed my eyes. Yes I could. I was strong. I’d proven that time and time again. This was for Addison. I could do this for her. I gulped as Cassie popped us away. My face immediately felt hot. Addison was already in her dress. Her mom was there. I smiled, “You look gorgeous Ads….” Paige frowned, “Mel? You look really pale...Are you ok?” I was running through what must be Addison and Jason’s room. I put the toilet seat lid up and threw up violently. My eyes went wide. That couldn’t be good. I was throwing up black bile. I didn’t even eat a muffin today...or anything. Paige came in behind me and gasped, “It’s the Red Run territory?! Being here in Red Run is making her sick. CRAP! I don’t have everything I need. It has to brew for a week to work. I’m so sorry Mel.” I laid down on the tile, “It’s fine.” Addison frowned, “We will just cancel.” I sat up and threw up again.
I pushed away and leaned my head against the wall. I shakily said, “No, you won’t cancel, Ads. Promise me. This is a happy day for you. Someone can record it….We will watch it together over drinks and toast your day. You’re in your dress. I know you excited...and Jason…” I paused to throw up more. Addison was on the phone. Cassie frowned and told me, “I’ll get you home then I’ll send Alexander to you.” I shook my head, “No, keep Xander here. Promise me Cassie….Jason needs him. If you promise me….Xander will stay. You know he will.” Cassie bit her lip. I closed my eyes and threw up more. I tried linking Cassie, “Can you hear me?” Cassie’s eyes widened, “Yes.” I linked back, “Every nice day we tried to have for Addison her father ruined it. Even her birthdays as a little kid before I showed up. She deserves the perfect day.” Cassie sighed, “Alright. I promise to keep Alexander here.” Valentina shimmered in, “I’ll take Mel back.” She touched me and we were gone. She shivered. I frowned, “Are you ok?” Valentina said, “Huh what? Yeah….I just got this overwhelming sense of...I don’t even know….I want to go back.” I shrugged, “You can go. I’ll be fine.” Valentina shook her head, “Nope. I promised Addison. I’m with you.” I sighed, “We are supposed to be there for her.” Valentina asked, “Are you ok now?” I nodded, “I feel fine now.” I bolted up, “That’s it! We can shimmer to our spot on Alpha Raven’s boundary! We can watch the mating ceremony from there.” Valentina smiled, “You always come up with a way. I grabbed my phone and texted Addison.
Me: A spell can’t keep me away. I’ll be on the border with binoculars. I promised I’d be there….and by god I’m going to be there in more than spirit.
Ads: OH MY GOD! I love you Mel! That means the world to me
Me: :) Now go marry my brother and stuff.
Ads: Oh...I will ;)
Me: Ew.
Ads: You started it
Me: Touché
I grabbed my backpack and shoved some binoculars in them. Valentina smiled and handed me my rifle. I snorted, “Sometimes the scope just has a better view.” She nodded, “I know you think that.” I grabbed my laptop and a camera. I could zoom in and see if we could watch the ceremony that way. I grabbed an extra handgun just in case.
I smiled at Valentina, “Shimmer us away.” Valentina tilted her head, “Are you forgetting….something? We still smell like us.” I sighed, “I mean….it’s not a super big deal if they smell us, but we will be in Alpha Raven’s territory without permission…..you have a point.” I dug through my bag and brought out the spray. I sprayed her then me. Valentina smiled, “That will only last about an hour.” I nodded, “I know. Xander has already commented about my lack of smell once. I imagine after the ceremony he’s going to pop in to check on me.” Freya sighed, “I suppose I can help you from my end.” I frowned, “Huh?” Freya snorted, “Oden can sense us.” Damn that was true. I mean that wasn't a bad thing. Freya laughed, “I’ll handle it.” I asked, “How?” She didn’t say anything. She was such a tight lipped wolf sometimes. I nodded to Valentina and she shimmered us away. I quickly climbed my tree and put up a camera. I came down lower on the tree and pulled out my laptop. We’d mad essentially a tree stand in this one. I zoomed the camera in as much as we could. My computer had the sound turned off, but Valentina and I saw the alert come in. The ring was attacking Jason and Addison’s mating ceremony as a distraction. I pulled out my heat signature binoculars and looked around. I found the snipers easily. I typed out a message to Valentina to find what this was the distraction for. She nodded.
The ring was NOT stopping Addison and Jason from getting married. Even from the dungeons Edward’s legacy of ruining things for Addison lived on. That asshole. I climbed up further into the tree. I began jumping from tree to tree towards the first sniper. Freya sighed, “I’m tempted to tell you I won’t help you not let Oden know we are here if you INSIST on acting like a squirrel.” I sighed, “Do you have a better way to sneak up on the sniper without shooting him and ruining the ceremony?” Freya sighed, “Yes and no…..Not something we can do right now.” I sighed. I didn’t have time for her cryptic answers. I killed the first sniper fairly easily, taking him by surprise and moved on. Once I killed all of them I took the final one’s earpiece. They were talking in clicks. There were more of them. Witches were helping conceal the scent of rogues. UGH. I quickly sent out a message to the group with watches to be on alert. Jason nor Addison would have theirs on. Everyone needed to be ready. I jumped down from the tree. A warlock came out. I rolled my eyes and engaged him in a fairly quick fight. Unlike Paige….these people didn’t learn how to fight with more than their powers. A serious mistake on their part, in my opinion.
I was jogging back to Valentina when another warlock stepped out with a fancy sniper rifle and aimed. I didn’t even have to think about who it was aimed at. It would be Jason. Fury overtook me. I ran at the warlock and moved the gun into the air. I snapped his neck. The clicks were getting more intense. I looked through the scope. Valentina shimmered next to me. She whispered, “Your Xander is on his way towards us….” I shot rapid fire taking out the snipers and a few witches. Ten in total. Valentina said, “I used to code to figure out who the real target is. It’s Alpha Theo’s pack….. We both know the man that has long since wanted Alpha Theo’s territory.” I felt the blood leave my face. We did know who wanted his territory. I whispered, “It’s Alpha Theo’s youngest daughter’s birthday today.” Valentina cringed, “Crush and Virgil are waiting back at your place.” I grabbed her hand and she shimmered us away. I nodded to Virgil and Crush and ran out into the yard.
I yelled, “ALL WARRIORS ON ME NOW!” People came running from every direction. I saw Liam. I told him, “You split fifty warriors off to go with you to Red Run. Virgil and Crush will go with those men. Your Alpha’s and Luna’s are under attack. It’s a distraction. I need your BEST trackers with me. Along with….” I checked my watch. Valentina had sent me the numbers of what the ring was sending to Alpha Theo. I hissed. Alpha Ezra was trying to take over and had taken hundreds of rogues. Luckily, I knew Black Mountains warrior numbers. I cringed, “I need three hundred warriors with me. The rest need to remain on alert here. The real attack is going down at Alpha Theo’s pack. You guys need to end the fight in Red Run and get to us. This is a big attack that is intent on taking over Alpha Theo’s pack and wiping out his family.”
The warriors growled as Liam and his family quickly split out the groups. I walked over to Virgil and Crush. I told Crush, “You stick by my mom. Nothing gets near her. Understand?” My palms were sweating again. Crush nodded, “I will make sure no one hurts your mom, Mel.” I nodded. I wasn’t there in my dreams, but I knew the fight I kept seeing wasn’t in Red Run; however it couldn't hurt to make sure she was protected. I told Virgil, “You go get our guy as soon as the fight ends. No doubt his dad put him in the dungeons so he wouldn't interfere. You get him out and to the fight so he can take over the pack.” Liam frowned, “You have someone to take over the pack attacking Alpha Theo already?” I nodded, “Yes, his son. Well, one of them. Some of them suck.” Liam frowned, “Alpha Ezra doesn’t have a son.” I snorted, “He doesn’t have a son with his mate….but….. I don’t have time to explain the practices of how he runs his pack. His son is a good man.” Everyone nodded. Cory came over to our side. I told the other group before they left, “Nothing happens to my mate….or my family. Understood? You protect your Alpha’s and your allies.” Everyone nodded and they shimmered out.
I turned to my group, “Who are the best trackers?” They came forward. I handed each of them a spray that Paige and I developed to make hollo port’s visible. I told them, “On the side Alpha Theo and his family will be standing on…..further back into the tree line is an escape route….you will go to that area... use that spray to find the hollo ports. You will guard them. Who are ten of the strongest fighters?” They came over. I nodded, “You are with the trackers to guard them until I draw Alpha Ezra into the open.” They gaped, “Alpha Ezra is who is attacking?” I nodded, “He is. Once I draw him out into the open. Five of you join the fight. I don’t care how you decide who does that. The leadership of their pack will be coming for who is left to try and escape. I don’t care how you choose to stop them, but ANYONE who comes for those hollo ports….does NOT get to safety. The rest of you….you will form a giant circle in the tree line. There WILL be rogues. If you see them kill them quietly. You will wait for my signal to come out. How they will attack will be to send the rogues to tire out the pack then their pack will come. We are going to surround them so we are coming at them from the inside and out. No matter what….you HOLD until I tell you to attack. Now, fifty of you will be coming into the fight initially with me. Cory, make those assignments.” I wasn’t surprised when he assigned himself to join me.
Valentina threw me a sniper rifle and my gear. I quickly put on my bullet proof vest and strapped myself down with weapons. I said, “Let’s go. We are all coming back here. Do you understand me? Fight like you have been trained. We will NOT go down at the hands of the ring, rogues, or an Alpha who doesn’t deserve the name. Is everyone clear on that?” They nodded. I turned to the pack members who were staying behind. I said, “To those staying behind. Non-fighters….You stay inside. Call our allies and make sure they are on alert. Anyone who can get to Alpha Theo’s that are fighters…. well….we could use the numbers. Warriors. You guard our borders. No one gets inside that doesn’t belong.” They howled in agreement. I nodded to Valentina, “Let’s go.” We joined with our warriors and left. She began shimmering the warriors in the areas we wanted them. I surveyed the area. I quickly noticed I was too far away from Lux. I saw the slight shimmer of the sniper rifle. I knew they’d fire at Lux first. I yelled, “LUX GET DOWN!” I took aim and fired as the sniper hit the building behind Lux. He’d listened and ducked thank god. I shot the sniper and fired in quick succession. I yelled, “ALPHA THEO IT’S AN ATTACK!” I threw my rifle to Valentina who had shimmered back.
I took off running yelling, “NON FIGHTERS TAKE COVER NOW!” My focus was on Alpha Theo’s daughter and his pregnant Luna. They were the furthest away from the group. Rogues began to run in from the tree line. Alpha Theo’s mate looked across to him in a panic. He was running to her, but he was too far away. Plus, I was much faster. She was running with her daughter who was screaming for Lux and her dad. I yelled, “HIT THE GROUND NOW!” Alpha Theo’s mate did without question. I jumped over her and snapped the neck of the rogue about to pounce on her. The Luna told her daughter, “Run Mae! RUN!” I turned, “NO! Wait!” I quickly killed another rogue. One of the Luna’s son’s ran to her and shifted back. He took her bridal style and ran. She screamed, “MAE! THEO GET MAE!” I took off running after Mae. A rogue jumped on her. I dove and blocked her neck with my arm. His teeth sank deep into my forearm. I screamed in pain. The warriors that had come out with me roared in anger. I punched the rogue between the eyes and used his stunned demeanor to snap his neck. I grabbed Mae, “I’ve got you it’s ok.” She gasped, “You fast.” For a two year old...putting two words together was pretty good. I snorted, “I am.” I ran her to Alpha Theo. He shifted back and hugged her tight. I told him, “You lead your pack. I’ll get to safety...I swear.” He looked at me as several emotions crossed his face. He nodded, “Thank you.” I took Mae back and ran to the pack house. I picked up another child who was trying to run to safety and threw him over my shoulder. I dashed into the pack house and a door flung open. The Luna grabbed Mae and another woman grabbed the boy. I ushered them back into the safe room. I quickly ran back outside and killed several rogues that were trying to get in.
