Chapter 5: The Glamorous World of Entertainment

Lily's beauty was a sight to behold, easily matching the allure of Vision Entertainment Group's top-tier stars. With such breathtaking beauty, it's no surprise she caught the discerning eye of Vision's talent scouts. Even so, everyone couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. After all, this was Vision Entertainment, the crème de la crème of Riverwest City's entertainment scene. If she signed with them, with their vast resources and star-making prowess, not becoming famous would be a challenge. Christopher, standing nearby, felt his curiosity ignite. He hadn't anticipated Lily signing with Vision. But after today, Vision would be his, and so would she. A sly smile tugged at Christopher's lips as he sauntered over to Lily, eager for a chat. Before he could say a word, as soon as he sat down, Lily wrinkled her nose and discreetly shifted away, eyeing Christopher with disdain. "You smell like sweat. Could you keep your distance?" Christopher was caught off guard, instinctively blurting out, "Sorry, I rushed out and didn't have time to shower." Lily covered her nose, her voice dripping with disdain. "Christopher, can't you at least shower and put on something decent before stepping out? Look at you, covered in dust. Anyone would think a construction worker had wandered in." What the heck, he thought. These clothes were freshly washed yesterday, and he didn't reek of sweat. If anything, there was a faint minty scent from the detergent. And what's wrong with construction workers? Can't they come to a place like this too? Just as Christopher was about to retort, his high school buddy, Smauel, yanked him away. Back in school, Christopher was always top of the class, while Smauel was perpetually at the bottom. Yet, despite their contrasting personalities and grades, they became the closest of friends. Smauel dragged Christopher to a secluded corner, sighed, and shook his head. "Chris, a woman like Lily is out of our league. Let's be realistic." Christopher paused, noticing the forlorn look on Smauel's face. It seemed his friend hadn't had the best of times over the years. He chuckled, choosing not to argue, and instead steered the conversation towards Smauel's recent life. Having not seen each other for years, once they started talking, they couldn't stop, making Christopher feel as if he were back in his school days. As drinks flowed, everyone became a bit tipsy, and the atmosphere grew lively. Lily, being the center of attention, was naturally toasted frequently. After several rounds, she was visibly tipsy. Her dreamy eyes and flushed cheeks left the men around her mesmerized. She was just too beautiful. The gathering was joyous, but with work the next day, no one could fully indulge. So, Harry suggested they meet again next weekend and invite their homeroom teacher. Harry's suggestion was met with unanimous agreement. As the party ended, the male classmates vied to escort Lily home. However, once outside the karaoke lounge, Lily hopped into a Mercedes G-Class and drove off without a backward glance. The female classmates were filled with envy and jealousy, wishing they had been born with such stunning looks. "I'd give ten years of my life just for one night with a woman like that," Smauel muttered, swallowing hard. Christopher watched Lily's departing figure, a cold smile playing on his lips. Hope tomorrow brings you a surprise! Christopher thought with a cold chuckle. Just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID: "Wife Dearest!" Christopher quickly answered the call, but before he could utter a word, Mia's icy voice pierced through the line, "Where are you? Do you want everyone to wait just for you? Are you trying to embarrass me on purpose?" Mia's voice was cold, tinged with a hint of disappointment. Oh no, Christopher thought, smacking his forehead in disbelief. How could he have forgotten about this? He hurriedly told Samuel, "Let's meet again next week," and fumbled in his pocket for his keys to unlock his little scooter. In his rush and with some alcohol still in his system, he fumbled several times before finally unlocking it. "Haha, how embarrassing! Showing up to a reunion on an electric scooter, aren't you ashamed?" "Hey, Emma's a national brand, you know." "Hahaha, yeah, a real brand name!" A few female classmates laughed openly. Christopher heard them, but he couldn't be bothered to argue with these narrow-minded women. After unlocking the scooter, he sped off. At the entrance of a high-end villa community in Riverwest City, Mia stood in a black evening gown, accentuating her graceful figure to perfection. Around her swan-like neck was a dazzling sapphire necklace. The deep blue gem complemented her smooth, delicate skin, like the most beautiful painting on earth. Christopher was momentarily stunned, entranced by her beauty to the point of speechlessness. Mia noticed his dumbfounded look and, with a blank expression, said coldly, "Tonight's event will have many family elders attending. Try not to say anything and don't embarrass me." Christopher snapped back to reality, nodded slightly without saying a word, parked his newly bought electric bike, and got into the car. He barely had a chance to sit down before his mother-in-law, Jessica, launched into a scolding. "Smell yourself, reeking of alcohol, and look at that dusty face. Where's your suit? Are you trying to make our family a laughingstock? Do you want us to be humiliated in front of the family elders? You ungrateful wretch, what's your intention?" Jessica wore a white evening gown, contrasting with Mia's black one. Standing together, they could easily be mistaken for sisters. Christopher scratched his head, gave a sheepish grin, and said nothing. Jessica was so infuriated by his nonchalant demeanor that her chest heaved, and she nearly hurled her purse at him. Mia, seeing her mother so agitated, tried to calm her, "Mom, don't be mad." "My dear, listen to your mother. Go to the civil affairs bureau tomorrow and get a divorce certificate from this loser. Even if you don't think for yourself, think for your mother. If this continues, he'll drive me to an early grave." Mia remained silent, glancing at Christopher through the rearview mirror, her disappointment unmistakable. Even she didn't understand why she felt so let down. The journey was silent, and the three arrived outside the Walker Estate. By then, the entrance was jam-packed with luxury cars, not a single exception in sight. At this hour, everyone who was supposed to be there had arrived, and the estate's lawn was dotted with people standing in small groups. They held glasses, chatting in clusters. Seeing Mia approach, many greeted her. In such a setting, Christopher could only fade into the background, trailing behind Mia as everyone instinctively overlooked him. That was just as well, less talking meant fewer mistakes.Christopher rubbed his stomach, realizing he had been so caught up in drinking at the reunion that he hadn't eaten a thing, leaving his stomach empty. He decided it was time to grab some food. As he reached for a plate, a figure stepped into his path. "Well, if it isn't Mia's prized husband, Christopher!" Harry sauntered over, eyeing Christopher up and down before exclaiming, "Wow, that outfit you're wearing—I swear I've seen a beggar on the street wearing the same thing. Did you swipe it from him?" Harry's voice was loud, deliberately drawing everyone's attention to Christopher, who suddenly became the center of attention. Christopher scratched his nose, wondering why every encounter with this fool had to be so humiliating. Was he really that much of a magnet for trouble? Seeing Christopher remain silent, Harry pressed on, "See, I was right, wasn't I? If you can't afford clothes, just give me a call. I've got plenty at home I could spare." "Nonsense," Christopher retorted. "This outfit was a gift from my wife. Besides, if I ever need clothes, my wife will buy them for me." "Haha!" The crowd erupted into laughter, amused by the spectacle of someone so shamelessly reliant on his wife's generosity. It was truly a rare sight! "Christopher... get over here already!" Mia's face burned with embarrassment as she felt the weight of everyone's stares. She was mortified, wishing she could have left him at home. Then, Harry dropped a bombshell that left the room in stunned silence once again!
