Episode One
Evelyn’s POV I didn’t think twice before opening his door. My hands trembled with a mix of excitement and nerve, the way they always did when I was about to see Nathan. It wasn’t unusual for me to stop by his apartment unannounced, especially when I missed him. Today, I had brought his favorite dessert, or so I thought. The sight of the bright red box in my hand made me smile. I could already picture his grin when he saw me standing there. I pushed the door open. “Nathan?” I called, stepping into the apartment. He wasn't in the living room. I checked the kitchen, and he also wasn't there. “Nathan?” I called again, heading to his room. I opened the door almost immediately. But my voice caught in my throat. There, on top of the bed, were two people I knew too well. Nathan. And Anita. My younger sister. They didn’t hear me enter. Nathan’s back was to me, his hands resting comfortably on Anita’s breasts, caressing it gently. Her head rested on the bed, moaning loudly as Nathan thrust into her repeatedly on the bed we had both shared hundreds of times. I froze. My heart raced as my brain tried to make sense of what I was seeing. My fingers went limp, and the dessert box slipped from my hands, landing on the floor with a thud. That sound broke the spell. Nathan spun around, his face draining of color when he saw me. Anita’s moaning stopped abruptly. Anita immediately tried to cover herself with the bed cloth, but Nathan jumped off her immediately trying to approach me naked, with his shaft dangling between his legs. He didn't even have the decency to cover himself up before walking up to me. “Evelyn…” Nathan’s voice was barely audible. Anita lay on the bed, her wide eyes full of guilt, her lips parted as if she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words. For a moment, I couldn’t move. My feet felt like they were rooted to the ground. My chest felt tight, like I couldn’t breathe. “How could you?” My voice cracked. I wasn’t sure who I was addressing him, her, or both. “Evelyn, it’s not what it looks like.” Nathan said, taking a step toward me. “Don’t.” I snapped, holding up my hand. “Don’t come any closer.” Anita looked away, avoiding my gaze, which only made the anger boiling inside me worse. “You,” I said, pointing at her. “You’re my sister. My sister, Anita! How could you do this to me?” Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. Nathan tried again, his voice desperate. “Evelyn, please, let me explain…” “Explain what?” I cut him off. “That you’re a liar? That you’ve been sneaking around with my sister behind my back?” My voice rose, echoing in the small apartment. “There’s nothing to explain, Nathan. I saw everything.” Tears burned in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. Not here. Not in front of them. I turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind me. AT THE ROD’s MANSION The drive to my parents’ house was a blur. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. My chest felt heavy, each breath a struggle as I replayed the scene over and over in my mind. When I reached the house, I barely registered parking the car or walking up the familiar path to the front door. All I knew was that I needed to see my parents to find some kind of comfort or reassurance that the world wasn’t completely falling apart. But the moment I stepped inside, I heard their voices. “I’m just saying,” my father was saying, his tone cautious, “we need to tell Evelyn soon. She’s going to find out eventually.” “And what do we say?” my mother replied, her voice anxious. “That her younger sister is pregnant for her boyfriend? How do we even begin that conversation?” I froze. My stomach dropped, and for a moment, I thought I might be sick. “You knew?” My voice cut through the room, loud and trembling. My parents turned to see me standing in the doorway. My mother’s face turned pale, her eyes widening in surprise. My father looked away, guilt written all over his face. “Evelyn...” my mother began, her voice soft and uncertain. “You knew about Anita and Nathan,” I said, stepping into the room. “And you didn’t say anything?” “Sweetheart, it’s not that simple,” my father said, standing up from the couch. “Not that simple?” I repeated, my voice rising. “You knew my sister was sleeping with my boyfriend, and you kept it from me. And now she’s pregnant? How is that not simple?” “Evelyn, please, calm down,” my mother pleaded, reaching out to me. “Don’t,” I said sharply, taking a step back. “Don’t try to explain this to me. You both knew, and you said nothing. You let me walk around like a fool, thinking everything was fine while this was happening behind my back.” “It isn’t like that,” my father said weakly. I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “You chose her,” I whispered. “You chose Anita over me.” I didn’t wait for them to respond. I turned and walked out, slamming the door behind me. AT THE CLUB The music was deafening. The bass thumped in my chest, drowning out my thoughts and, for a moment, the pain. I didn’t belong here. Clubs weren’t my scene, but I didn’t care. I needed to forget. I sat at the bar, nursing my third drink or was it my fourth? The alcohol burned as it went down, but it was a welcome distraction from the ache in my chest. People danced and laughed around me, their faces a blur of color and movement. I envied them. For a few hours, they got to escape reality. That’s all I wanted to escape. “Another?” the bartender asked, his voice barely audible over the music. I nodded, sliding my empty glass toward him. Somewhere in the haze, I thought I heard someone say my name. I turned, but the room spun, and I couldn’t tell who it was. My vision blurred. My legs felt like jelly. The floor tilt ed beneath me. I stumbled, and just as everything went black, I felt a pair of strong arms catch me.
