Chapter 12 A Day of SurprisesIt had taken just over nine seasons for the Great Hall and the square to be completed. Spindly saplings had been planted that one day would grow bold and tower up to the skies with branches forming bold canopies of dappled shade. Around the trees elaborate sculptures carved from wood and stone were dotted here and there. Men sat playing board games in the shade or ambled in the last light of the sun, children moaned as their mother’s summoned and bed time woes beckoned, tears welled as they bid their friends good-moon and went their separate ways with pigskin ball or stick sword or wooden spear clutched in their tiny hands.
