"Are you listening?" my little brother Klaus asked looking up from his tablet.
"Sure" I responded pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Something bothering you Donnie boy?" He asked placing the tablet on his lap. He's definitely the more eccentric one. We sat across from each other in the stretch Cadillac, on our way back to the packhouse. He had on a fitted lilac colored Givenchy suit, adorned with pink and white flowers. His light brown hair had golden highlights and was slicked back. Not a single hair was out of place. His gold rings with rainbow diamonds adorned each finger. His nails were pink today.
"Earth to Donnie" he said snapping directly in front of my face.
"Ugh, Klaus, what?" I said rubbing my face in annoyance.
"Penny for your thoughts?" He asked placing his chin in his hand, staring at me.
"I'm exhausted. I can't focus on these stupid ass business meetings when we have a rogue problem at home. I'm needed there. I don't see why the hell they needed me here when I have you to handle the business side of things" I said in a huff.
"Well big brother. That's the joy of being king. You have to spread yourself as thin as a whores legs and make sure every aspect of everything is perfection" he said nonchalantly picking up the tablet again.
"Lucky me" I groan leaning my head back. We have three businesses in the human side of town, to bring profits to the pack house. Because of my brothers expertise, they're flourishing. They're all his business ventures, a high end clothing store, a steel mill, and a chain of grocery stores. Because variety is the spice of life right? All I did was fund the start ups and sign a piece of paper. These are his babies. I'm more concerned with running my pack with an iron fist. Talking makes me uncomfortable. I lead with actions. We have the biggest pack in the US, with more than 2000 members. We have the best warriors and training programs. I taught my wolves to kill rouges on sight. And trespassers? I implore my wolves to go with their guts. If something doesn't feel right, execute them. No questions asked. I demand loyalty, respect and hard work. I became Alpha when I was a mere 15 years old. After my shithead father beat my mother to death and started in on Klaus. I have his skull on a stake, in a display box in front of the packhouse gates. I'm also the king of all Alphas so there's no room to sugarcoat anything in my world. Klaus and I are lycans. The most powerful shifters on earth. My beta, and childhood best friend Eli and his twin sister Ellie are also lycans. The rest of our pack are normal werewolves, with the exception of some of their mates. I embrace diversity as long as they're loyal. We have a few fae, a witch, a couple dragons and even a vampire. I'm not too fond of her, but she's always been respectful so I let her and her mate stay.
We've been gone for three days and I'm already itching to take my inner lycan for a run. As we drive deeper into the woods, I let a deep breath out. I'm so close to home I can taste it.
"We have, have, HAVE to meet with Melissa tomorrow. You rescheduled three times and quite frankly brother it's unprofessional. We need your signature on some more documents and you have to do a run through of the mill and give it the green light" Klaus rambles, pressing goddess knows what on his tablet.
I practically jump out of the car when it stops at the gates, waiting for us to enter. Hi dad I smirk to myself.
"I wish you would take that goddess awful skull away from the entrance big brother. It's mortifying." He says turning his nose up in disgust. Even though it was 15 years ago, I know the pain is still fresh in his mind. So what if he's different. He's smart, loyal and strong. And he's the only blood I have left in this world. I'd be damned if I let my father take him from me too.
"I like to keep the reminder that me or my family are not ones to f**k with" I say proudly as we enter the gate. He shakes his head and puts his glasses back on. They're purple and bedazzled and on a dainty chain like the librarians wear.
"Where the f**k did those come from? You don't even need glasses" I say looking at him.
He bursts out laughing and shrugged. "Aesthetic. And it goes great with my outfit"
I chuckled and climbed out of the car behind him, my stone cold demeanor returning. No one is to look me in my eyes or try to have a conversation with me. Klaus is the only person allowed talk candidly with me. Even Eli has boundaries he's dared not cross. Everyone who we pass, bows their head in respect. Klaus shoos them away and marches into the house. Something is different. I know there's been no rogue problems because no one contacted me. In my absence, Eli runs the pack and I trust him with my life. Maybe I'm just overly excited to be home. I nod at passerby's bowing with a straight face and make my way up the driveway. I walk in the packhouse and I'm met with the most delicious smell. It almost makes my mouth water. It's faint, but it smells like strawberry cake and lemon icing. I begin walking to the kitchen to see what the cooks made and I stop in my tracks once I walk pass one of the couches.
Mate. my lycan says.
I look down and see the black motorcycle jacket sitting on the couch. Oh goddess, I realize that's where the smell is coming from.
"Who's jacket is this?" I ask staring at it, my eyes turning black. My voice echoed through the packhouse. The maids and pack members begin scurrying around. I let out a low growl and everyone freezes in their tracks.
"Brother, I wasn't expecting you so soon. But I can't say i'm surprised" Eli says walking up to me with his arms extended.
"Who's f*****g jacket is this?" I growl again.
Eli drops his hands to his side but never drops his smile. He's always been a troublemaker despite his angelic appearance. He's also a skilled fighter and insanely loyal. He looks at the jacket in my hands and raises an eyebrow.
"I think we should take this conversation to your office Alpha." He says slowly approaching me. I let out another low growl and begin to shake. s**t. I'm losing control.
"Klaus! Klaus! We need you in here buddy!" Eli calls to the kitchen. He's slowly walking towards me with his hands up and his head slightly bowed.
"Yes my angel?" Klaus says sauntering in the room. Once he looks at me, his smile drops. "And what the f**k got your panties in a bunch?" He asks crossing his arms.
"Who's jacket is this?!" I roar, shaking the chandeliers and all the glassware in the room.
"Okay everyone, let's calmly evacuate, nothing to see here" Eli says slowly backing away from me and trying to get the attention of everyone frozen in fear. I start snarling and my eyes are almost pitch black now. Klaus walks up to me and snaps his finger in my face.
"Donnie? Care to tell me what's got you all riled up?" He says with his arms still crossed and tapping his foot. "Come on honey, let's sit and chat about it" He says slowly taking the jacket from my hand. I growl but he slowly continues to pry it out of my fist. "I'm not gonna hurt it drama queen. Let's just go to your office" He coos, walking backwards.
He never gives me his back and slowly makes his way up to the third floor where my office is. I stalk him silently, my eyes fixated on the black jacket. Eli keeps a safe distance behind me. Once we get in, I snatch the jacket from Klaus and drop in my chair. I put it up to my nose and instantly feel calmer.
"Sooo, how was your business trip?" Eli asks sitting in a chair across from my desk. I slam my fist into the desk and it makes a cracking down.
"Quit f*****g with me Eli" I snarl.
"Seriously though Eli. Who's biker coat is this? A baby? It's so tiny. Oh my goddess! A biker club made only of babies! Could you imagine? So adorable" Klaus says holding the jacket up. I begin bashing my head into the desk. Maybe if I do it hard enough, by the fourth time it'll kill me. If i'm lucky.
"Okay, okay big guy. Take it easy" Eli says trying to hide a smile.
"I'm waiting Eli." I say void of any emotion. These two knuckleheads are going to be the death of me.
"So everything went perfectly fine while you were gone. Because I'm the best freaking beta around and I'm pretty sure I do this better than you" Eli begins with a toothy grin. I groan and get into position to finally end it all.
"Okay, okay. Anyways everything went great. Until about two hours ago" he continues. Klaus and I raise our eyebrows and look at each other before looking back to him.
"There was a breach. A human stumbled across our boarders" He said shrugging.
"You mean trespassed?" I ask sitting back and folding my arms. We're so deep in the woods that a human would've had a hell of a time getting near our boarders. Let alone pass them.
"Technicality" Eli says dismissively waving his hand. "Well this girl looked like she survived hell. The poor thing was dazed and bloody. She even puked on Prescott's boots" He says chucking.
"Oh my goddess! I MUST meet her" Klaus says jumping up from his seat.
"See here's the thing. Some stuff she said didn't add up. Not like she was up to anything but like she wanted to hide who she was. I got the vibe that she was telling half truths. And I can't put my finger on it, but this girl is special. I was drawn to her. There's more to her story." He finishes sitting back looking damn proud of hisself.
"Eli. You've told me absolutely nothing. Oh goddess help me. Matter of fact, kill me" I say burying my face in my hands.
"Well where is the little rebel?" Klaus asks lifting up one of the cushions and looking under it.
"She left" Eli simply responds.
"WHAT" I growl, once again shaking everything in site.
"Well Prescott did raise the issue that you don't like 'trespassers'" Eli said doing air quotes. "So I sent her home. Was that okay? I'm curious as to why you're so worked up about a tiny little human. Is there something you want to share?" Eli asks, a smile slowly spreading across his face. Silence filled the room as they both waited for me to respond.
"Sooooo, I'm guessing this human is your mate? The subtle reaction to the jacket may have given it away big brother." Klaus says smirking at me.
"Where did you take her?" I ask, ignoring the smiles from the both of them.
"Relax big guy. I just dropped her off at the next town over. I made her promise to have dinner with us tomorrow before she goes back home. And yes, I have someone sitting outside the hotel. She hasn't left" Eli reassured me.
"Home?" Klaus and I ask simultaneously.
"Yeah she's from somewhere in the UK supposedly. Her accent sounds like it, but she went out of her way not to say too much about it." Eli said getting up. "Now you get your beauty rest. We wouldn't want you getting all cranky and scaring your possible mate" Eli says winking and walking out the door.
"I need to go shopping. Not for me, for my future sister-in-law. Because if that's the best she has, yikes" Klaus says excusing himself. He gives me a small smile and shuts the door.
I need to go for a run.
