Part 1: Arden
The sun barely rose as I heard screaming and cries from outside. I couldn’t help but jump to my feet from my bed. The air around me seemed to be cold and eerie and I couldn’t help but feel as if I was being watched. More screaming erupted throughout the castle and I dashed down stares to see fire set ablaze in my kingdom. How could this be? I scanned the room and there standing before me was a very tall muscular king with fiery red hair that falls down into a battel braid; the sides of his head shaved to give a fade to match his style and his beard long enough to have mini battle braids. His eyes filled with hatred and a cold feeling that almost made me believe he was dead on the inside. His eyes a fiery green as he watched me freeze in his presence. He grinned wickedly and spoke, “Hello Verena. Nice to see that you’re finally awake my queen.” Mortified that he knew my name I tried to run but he grabbed me by my hair almost throwing me to the ground. His eyes roamed my body as if he was scanning for imperfections. “Where do you think you’re running off to my queen? You can’t run away from me that easily.” He snickered out with a deep husky voice almost making my body completely submissive to him. “W..who are you?” I stammered out unable to break from his grasp. He pulled me up to his face and whispered softly in my ear almost kissing my skin with his words. “I’m Adler, king of the gods, and I’m here to claim my wife back.” (3 months prior) “Long ago there lived a strong race of magical warriors called the Cealestis warriors. They contained powerful magic that could be used to kill any living creature including the immortal gods who ruled us. With their prophecy of a Cealestis being more powerful than any of her kind would arise and put back order to all the realms were said to have……Verena?……Verena! VERENA WAKE UP!” I couldn’t help but become increasingly tired every time Hagan brought up my ancestors history. It was bad enough that I didn’t know my own parents because of the mass murder placed on my people by the King of gods. I was the only one left of my people and it didn’t help that I was the one the prophecy’s talked about. Hagan took care of me for 216 years. Our people mature at the age of 30 and slowly grow old after that but for me? I matured at the age of 24 and never got older. Come to find out I’m immortal and can only be killed by a god just like I can kill them. Ah this is great…………I’m dreaming again. I force myself to wake up as I feel Hagans small furry hands shake me to awaken. I look down at him and smile sheepishly. “I’m sorry Hagan. I know you try to teach me all the time about my people and how important my powers are but nothing is going to happen. We’ve been fine for 216 years. I’m pretty sure if any god was going to come and kill us they would’ve already done so.” I could see Hagan getting angry by my words and I couldn’t help but sigh and feel bad for my tone of insincerity. I know he cares for me enough to train me up but he never explained anything more than just that. Hagan sighs and looks out the window of our castle sitting on the very top of the hill in Arden. “Verena, I know you don’t want me to always remind you of this but I can’t help you forever. I need you to understand the severity of what could happen if you fell into the wrong hands.” I look at Hagan as he stands by the window with his big elf ears twitching and his hair combed back to make him look more distinguished. His grey hairs were more visible as the light shined delicately all around him. I walked up next to him to stare out the window and sat down beside him. “I know Hagan, I know that you care for me and I’m sorry that I haven’t been treating it seriously. It’s not easy..you know being the only one left of your kind and expecting to fulfill the prophecy’s that have been made centuries ago..I mean..you never tell me how I can harness and control my powers…” Hagan looks at me and sighs. His small body gets up as he walks over to the wall covered in books. We’ve been stuck in the library room all morning trying to go over lessons of my people and our power. “What if none of this was truly real? What if they made up some story about the prophecy’s as a old children’s tale to make us go to sleep with hope?” I bite my tongue after saying that. I couldn’t help but see the annoyance on Hagans face as I spat out another useless topic that he will shoot down with using my parents as a reasoning. “Verena! Why would you say that? Do you think your parents entrusted me in taking care of you if this was just some kind of old children’s story? Let alone…do you think your people would be wiped out because of it?” “W..well..if my people were truly wiped out for that reason, why haven’t the gods come and kill me yet?” Hagan looks at me with eyes of bewilderment and worry. He couldn’t help but look away as his body stiffened. His ears twitched betraying his stance of him trying to show that he’s unbothered by my statement. Him and I both know that if I was truly a threat to the gods, I would’ve also been killed before I was even born. Hagan answers barely above a whisper. “I..I don’t know Verena..but I swore to keep you safe with my very last breath..” Hagan and I both look at each other before sighing loudly and closing up the books that we had sprawled out on the oak wood table. “Before you go Verena..there is one thing you must know that I’ve never told you before.” I perk up and listen as he begins to clear his throat. “I’m not exactly sure how you’ll be able to tell but…the only way you can reach your true potential and control your powers is by finding your true mate. If you fall into the wrong hands…” My golden eyes widen as Hagan gives me new information for the first time. True mate? As in fated and bonded for life? How could this get any more confusing. “I think I’m done for the day Hagan. I need to stretch my legs from the boredom.” I laugh a little trying to get Hagan to lighten up. He’s still looking at me with worry in his eyes. “Hagan, I’ll be fine. You’ve taught me everything you know and I’ve never been more stronger than now. Let’s just..give the training and history lessons a break for now..at least enjoy the day and our peoples company.” I smile at Hagan as his wrinkled face smiles back at me warmly. He’s getting beyond his years being that he is reaching 569 years of age. I know it won’t be long before he passes to the great beyond and I can’t help but wonder if he’s afraid of leaving me behind on my own. I kiss his forehead and run out the library. “I’ll be back before dinner!”
