The crisp morning air carried the scent of flowers. Two potted plants stood on either side of the door, their vibrant green leaves wet with droplets of water. There were two cars parked at the front, and Amara stepped out of the unfamiliar one. Kelvin noted how his wife tensed at the sight of her. “That’s your ride,” he told her. He moved to her left and grabbed her hand, ignoring the startled glance she sent him as he tugged her to the car. Amara opened the back door for them, and she slipped in. Before she could shut the door in his face, he kissed her cheek. She flushed to her neck. “Have a nice day, Leila.” Amara collected his briefcase and started for his car.
