The Kingdom Beneath the Waves

1520 Words
The words hung in the air long after the creature spoke. "Together, they will either save both worlds... or destroy them." The ocean roared as lightning flashed across the dark sky. Asandia stood frozen. The guardian and the heiress. The prophecy. None of it made sense. She had spent her entire life believing she was an ordinary girl. Different, perhaps. Strange, definitely. But ordinary enough to belong in the small coastal village she called home. Now everything she believed was unraveling before her eyes. "What are you talking about?" she demanded. The creature's glowing eyes remained fixed on her. "You deserve answers, Princess." Princess. The word struck her like a physical blow. "I am not a princess." The creature tilted its head. "You are the last heir of Neravia." Before Asandia could respond, another violent tremor shook the shoreline. The sea rose higher, swirling around the creature's feet. Effiom stepped closer to her. "We need to leave." "No." Asandia pulled away from him. "Not until someone explains what's happening." The creature studied her for a long moment before speaking. "Very well." The waters behind him parted once again. This time, they revealed something impossible. A pathway. A glowing path made entirely of shimmering blue light stretched beneath the ocean surface, disappearing into the darkness below. Liora gasped. "That's impossible." The creature looked toward the path. "It leads to your kingdom." "My kingdom?" Asandia whispered. "Your birthright." The mark on her wrist burned again. This time, instead of pain, she felt a pull. A call. Something deep beneath the ocean was reaching for her. Waiting for her. Wanting her to come home. Far below the waves, the Kingdom of Neravia waited. Its towers were carved from giant pearls and crystal coral. Its streets glowed with ancient magic. Its people had waited eighteen years for their missing princess. And tonight, they would learn she was alive. Inside the Hall of Tides, Queen Seraphina stood before a massive window overlooking the kingdom. Her silver crown reflected the glow of the sea. Though she appeared strong, worry filled her eyes. "The barrier weakens every day," said an elderly advisor standing nearby. "I know." "The Shadow King grows stronger." Seraphina closed her eyes briefly. For eighteen years she had hidden the truth. For eighteen years she had protected her daughter from a destiny no child should bear. But fate was no longer willing to wait. "She knows nothing," the queen whispered. "Then she must learn." A painful silence followed. Finally, Seraphina nodded. "Prepare the kingdom." The advisor bowed. "The princess is coming home." Back on the shoreline, Asandia stared at the glowing pathway beneath the ocean. Part of her wanted to run. Part of her wanted to pretend none of this was real. But another part... A part she had ignored her entire life... Wanted answers. "What's your name?" she asked the creature. The guardian straightened. "I am Kaelor, Keeper of the Eastern Tides." "Why should I trust you?" "You shouldn't." The honesty surprised her. "But the truth remains the truth whether you trust me or not." Asandia looked toward the ocean. Then at Effiom. Then at Liora. Her best friend looked terrified. "You don't have to go," Liora said softly. Asandia swallowed hard. "What if I do?" Liora didn't answer. Because they both knew. The ocean had been calling her for years. And tonight she finally understood why. Effiom watched her carefully. "Whatever you decide, don't make the choice alone." Asandia turned toward him. "You knew about this place." "Not everything." "But something." He nodded reluctantly. "My grandfather told me stories." "What stories?" "Stories about the Child of Two Worlds." The wind shifted around them. "The same prophecy?" she asked. "Yes." Effiom's gaze darkened. "But the stories ended badly." A chill ran through her. "What happened?" "No one knows." The answer felt incomplete. Like he was hiding more. Yet before she could press him further, Kaelor spoke. "The kingdom cannot wait." The ocean pathway brightened. "The time has come." Asandia took a deep breath. Then another. Finally, she stepped forward. The moment her foot touched the glowing path, blue light exploded beneath her. The sea responded instantly. Waves rose around her like protective walls. The mark on her wrist began to glow. Symbols appeared across the water. Ancient symbols. Beautiful symbols. Powerful symbols. Kaelor bowed his head. "The ocean recognizes its heiress." Liora stared in amazement. Effiom looked concerned. Asandia looked terrified. Because she felt something awakening inside her. Something ancient. Something powerful. Something that had slept for eighteen years. The journey beneath the ocean was unlike anything she had imagined. Instead of drowning, she walked through a tunnel of water held apart by magic. Schools of glowing fish swam beside her. Massive sea creatures drifted through the depths. Colorful coral forests stretched for miles. Everything felt alive. Everything felt familiar. As if she had seen it all before. Memories flashed through her mind. A woman's laughter. A beautiful palace. A lullaby sung beneath the waves. Then they vanished. Leaving her breathless. "Did you see that?" she whispered. Kaelor nodded. "The kingdom remembers you." The answer only created more questions. Hours later, the tunnel opened. And Asandia saw Neravia. She stopped walking. Her heart nearly stopped. The kingdom was magnificent. Crystal towers rose from the ocean floor. Pearl bridges connected floating palaces. Silver lights illuminated every street. The entire city shimmered beneath the sea like a dream. "It's beautiful," she whispered. "It is your home." The words hit harder than expected. Home. Could this really be home? After eighteen years? After a lifetime of feeling like she belonged nowhere? As they approached the city gates, people began gathering. Hundreds. Then thousands. Citizens lined the streets. Watching. Waiting. Whispering. Asandia felt overwhelmed. "Why are they looking at me like that?" Kaelor smiled faintly. "Because they never thought they would see you again." The crowd parted. A woman stepped forward. She wore a silver gown that shimmered like moonlight. Her dark hair flowed around her shoulders. Her eyes... Asandia froze. They were identical to her own. The woman stopped several feet away. For a moment neither moved. Neither spoke. Tears filled the woman's eyes. "Asandia." The sound of her name broke something inside her. Because somehow... She recognized the voice. The lullaby. The memories. The dreams. "Mother?" The woman nodded. And then they ran toward each other. The moment they embraced, the crowd erupted into cheers. But Asandia barely heard them. For eighteen years she had imagined this moment. Wondered about it. Dreamed about it. And now her mother was real. Warm. Alive. Holding her tightly. "I thought I'd never see you again," Seraphina whispered. Tears streamed down Asandia's face. "Why did you leave me?" The question escaped before she could stop it. Pain flashed across the queen's face. "I didn't leave you." "Then where were you?" Seraphina gently touched her daughter's cheek. "Protecting you." Asandia shook her head. "I don't understand." "I know." The queen looked toward the palace. "And I promise you will." That evening, a royal feast was held in celebration of the princess's return. Music filled the halls. The people celebrated. But Asandia couldn't. Too many questions remained unanswered. She stood alone on a balcony overlooking the glowing city. The ocean currents drifted peacefully around her. "You should be celebrating." She turned. Effiom stood behind her. "You followed me here?" He smiled slightly. "You looked like you needed company." She looked back toward the city. "I don't know who I am anymore." Effiom moved beside her. "I think you're still the same person." "No." Her voice trembled. "This morning I was a village girl." She laughed bitterly. "Now apparently I'm a lost princess destined to save or destroy two worlds." Effiom couldn't argue with that. A silence settled between them. Comfortable. Gentle. Unexpected. Finally, Asandia spoke. "Why are you really here, Effiom?" His expression changed. The question had finally arrived. "The truth?" "Yes." He stared out across the kingdom. "My family has protected the barrier between worlds for generations." Asandia frowned. "The barrier?" "The magical wall separating the human world from everything else." A chill ran through her. "The voice in my dreams." Effiom nodded. "It's failing." The realization hit her immediately. "If it breaks..." "Both worlds collide." Neither spoke for several seconds. The danger suddenly felt much larger than her personal questions. Much larger than Neravia. Much larger than herself. Then alarms echoed across the kingdom. Loud. Urgent. Terrifying. The celebration stopped instantly. Citizens rushed into the streets. Guards grabbed weapons. Asandia's heart raced. "What is happening?" A soldier ran onto the balcony. "Your Majesty!" Queen Seraphina appeared moments later. Fear filled her face. "The Shadow King has found us." The entire kingdom fell silent. Asandia looked from the queen to Effiom. "Who is the Shadow King?" No one answered immediately. And that silence frightened her more than any response could. Because for the first time that night... Everyone looked afraid. And deep beneath the ocean floor, something ancient awakened. Something that had waited eighteen years for the return of the Ocean Heiress. Something that was finally ready to claim her.
