Briar “What are you doing, mommy?” Cass asked for the third time. I stared at the bush in the front yard as if daring it to move again. “Oh, nothing, Cass. How about you show me the new train set Iris bought you?” I asked casually, making sure I locked the door. This wasn’t a dangerous neighbourhood, but it was easy for reporters to sneak up on us. “I don’t want to. Where’s Severin?” Cass whined. “He’s my daddy. I told all my friends at school.” Cass picked up on that bit when Severin declared it during his encounter with Elijah. It wasn’t how I wanted to break the news. He wanted to know why Severin wasn’t there for his fifth birthday party and why he didn’t teach him how to ride a bike like his friend’s dad.
