The bad news

Block

I was about to kiss Dee but Paige and Kyle turned up, I cursed under my breath as Faith woke up and Dee sprinted away to see to her.

"I thought you two were going to your parents?" I glare at Kyle who mouths his apology.

"They decided to call it off at the last minute."

"Want a coffee?" I ask and they both nod.

"Where's Katie and Adam and was that Faith I heard crying?" Paige raises an eyebrow in confusion.

"They went grocery shopping and asked us to watch Faith." I shrug making my way over to the coffee machine.

"Awww, how cute." Paiges voice makes me turn and I see Dee walking into the kitchen cradling Faith. She doesn't say anything but drops the diaper bag on the counter and starts making a bottle with one hand, damn this woman is talented.

"Can you run that bottle under cold water, I'm going to change her diaper unless you want to do her diaper." Dee smirks at me and they all laugh as I shake my head. I watch as she heads into the lounge carefully placing Faith on the rug and gathering the essentials she needs out of the diaper bag, the bottle is pulled from my hand I turn to see Kyle smirking at me

"Don't worry man, I'll do this. You carry on." He laughs. Dees phone rings just as she finishes dressing Faith, she picks her up and places her in her pram while answering her phone.

A minute into the call, Dee runs outside and we look at each other confused but Paige heads in the same direction as Dee, Kyle gives me the cooled bottle and I pick Faith up and sit on the sofa to feed her.

Kyle offers to take Faith so I can go and check on the girls, I reach the door just as Paige comes in.

"Is everything alright Paige?" She shakes her head and I see the tears trickling down her cheeks.

"Hey, what's going on?" She sniffles

"Dees brother Aaron he's a Marine has been in an car accident just outside of the training camp, her sister in law Kayla has said Dee needs to get over now as they don't think he's going to make it" she sobs, my heart breaks for Dee, I give Paige a hug and lead her over to the sofa, and when Kyle sees her he puts a sleeping Faith in her pram and charges over to Paige.

"What's going on?" Kyle directs it at me so I tell him what she told me and his reaction mirrors mine.

"I should go check on Dee" but Paige stops me "She's coming in now, she just wanted a minute by herself." I nod and tidy away the baby things and send a quick message to Katie

"Sorry but your going to come pick up Faith, Dee has had some really bad news." She replies instantly

"We are on our way, hope she's ok." Just then the door opens and Dee walks in with her phone clutched in her hand, her normally sparkling green eyes are red and full of unshed tears the sight of her like this kills me, I walk over and wrap an arm around her waist leading her to the sofa.

The house has been silent since Dee entered but Katie arrives with Adam and Paige and Kyle usher them into the kitchen to tell them what's happened.

"Where do you need to go?" I ask Dee who stares at the bottle of water in her hands

"Portland, its almost a three hour drive."

"I'll drive you, I'm not letting you drive when your going through this. Go pack a bag and we will get on the road straight away, I'll grab some stuff and let the others know." She give a small smile.

"Thank you block, you're truly a secret gentleman." I laugh softly at her comment and she heads upstairs, I walk into the kitchen.

"Paige, are you ok to stay here and look after things? Adam and his crew start work tomorrow and she has some deliveries coming."

"Of course, where are you going?"

"I'm taking her to Portland. I'll call Gary and Sarah and let them know what's happening."

I fill two travel mugs with coffee and head to mine to pack a bag, after packing my duffle I shove it in the trunk of my car and head back into Dees where she's being pulled into hugs.

"Right I'm ready to go, I'll take your bag and put it in the car." I grab the travel mugs and her bag. Once I've loaded the car I back it onto her side of the drive and head back into the house where Dee has Faith cradled in her arms and everyone stares at her, Paige is sobbing quietly into Kyles shoulder.

Dee hands Faith back to Katie and pulls her into a hug "Come round for dinner when we get back" she smiles at Katie who immediately nods and smiles but the tell tale sign of tears are in my sisters eyes. I send a few quick messages while she gets engulfed in more hugs

"Sarah, Dees brother has been involved in an accident and the outcome doesn't look good so I'm taking her to Portland. I'll message Gary." I send pretty much the same to Gary but tell him to put me on emergency leave and I will keep him updated.

Dee

The whole trip here I sat in the seat curled up in ball praying the doctors are wrong, but as we enter the hospital we get ushered to a desk at ICU

"I'm here to see my brother Aaron Hayes." I watch as the nurse types on the keyboard her once smiling and polite face turns into one of sympathy.

"Take a seat over there, his other visitors are there." I turn to see the large waiting room full of uniformed Marines who all stand as Block and I enter, an older gentleman in his dress uniform steps forward and offers me his hand.

"Miss Hayes?" I turn to see a doctor and I nod "Your sister-in-law is requesting that you and your friend join her." I nod again and grab Blocks hand and we follow the doctor to a private room where I see Kayla sat on a chair beside a bed and after closer inspection I realise it's Aaron. I walk to Kaylas side

"Hey hon." I whisper making her turn

"Hi Dee. We were going to come and surprise you this weekend." She smiles sadly, I wrap my arms around her.

"It's ok, come here." She stands and my hand covers my mouth in shock

"Surprise, your going to be an auntie." She sobs and I can't help but pull her into my arms I squeeze her.

Stepping away

"Kayla this is James Brewer, James this is my sister in law Kayla." They shake hands,

"Wait, your Block goalie of The Red Socks?"

"Yes ma'am that's me." She almost swoons making me laugh.

"Why don't you two go get some coffees, I'll stay with Aaron." I want to spend some time alone with my brother.

After they leave I take a seat next to the bed and grab Aaron's hand

"So I'm going to be an auntie, I can't believe you managed to keep it a surprise." I chuckle softly, his heart rate on the monitor spikes slightly.

"Aaron please come back to us, you need to meet your baby and I f*****g need you." As Kayla and Block come back in Kayla sits the other side taking his hand and Block sits next to me with an arm around my waist.

"Please baby, just wake up. I love you!" Kayla sobs and another spike on monitor.

"Aaron, I need you, don't leave us. I love you" The monitor gives a high spike and then stops and there's nothing, the alarm on the machine beeps loudly and I run out into the corridor.

"I need someone, quick!" I scream, doctors and nurses flood the room and usher Kayla and Block out, closing the door. They pump his chest and use some kind of machine on his chest making his body rise and fall, I don't know how long this goes on for but they stop, a doctor exits the room

"I'm so sorry, we did everything we could." We walk back into the room where a nurse quietly unplugs all of the machines, he looks so peaceful now, I wrap my arms tight around Kayla as we both cry. Block has informed Aaron's captain. Kayla and I spend the next hour saying our goodbyes, I video called mom and dad who got my siblings there to say goodbye. The next few hours went by in a blur of phone calls, messages and lots of tears. I managed to convince Kayla to come back with us and stay at mine for a bit, so we are on our way home now.

Arriving home, Paige and Kyle were on the settee she was sobbing in his arms and Kayla rushed over to Paiges side wrapping her in an embrace, Kayla, Paige and I have been best friends for a long time so it's no surprise to see Kayla comforting Paige. Block takes Kyle into the kitchen while we all sit together, three cups of tea are placed on the coffee table in front of us and the guys sit down with us, Kayla shares the memories with us about Aaron's reaction to the pregnancy and she announces I'm going to have a baby niece in four weeks which makes me cry again.

Kayla has gone upto one of the guest rooms and Paige and Kyle have gone back to his house, Block has been amazing he's cleaned up the house while I had a bath, its after midnight when I slip into my large t-shirt and get straight into bed.
