The Beginning (1)

EDWARD'S POV My name is Edward Hawthorne, and I am the Alpha of the Emberheart Pack, and the heir to Fluers Limited. I took over the pack five months ago, after my father's death. My father was known for being a wealthy business tycoon, a man who gained even more power through his reign over our pack. But he didn't just reign over werewolves; he was also one of the country's wealthiest businessmen. Most people didn't know his true identity. They all assumed he was just like them, a human. He hid amongst humans with impressive skills. Humans don't believe in werewolves or any other supernatural beings. They believe and ignore what suits them—until a real problem arises. I'd told myself countless times that there was no way my father wouldn't have shown the traits of a werewolf, especially as an Alpha, whose emotions couldn't be hidden if he let his guard down. In his line of work, he got angry every day. Yet, people never seemed to notice the slight color change in his eyes, his sharp descending fangs, or his slightly pointed ears whenever he was furious. Perhaps they were too scared to notice these changes. I mean, who would dare look into my father's eyes when he was angry, unless he explicitly told you to? Now that he was dead, I was next in line. I'd been expecting the position, at least by the time I turned 25, but life had other plans. I was just a few months away from the assigned age when my father died. But it makes no difference. All that happened was that I started a year sooner. Just as humans didn't notice my dad was a werewolf, neither did my schoolmates—except for those who were werewolves themselves. I had no friends at school, but I had a lot of girls who always kept me company whether I liked it or not. I was always a magnet for female attention. If it wasn't my brown eyes, it was my body. Now, you are probably thinking how a twenty-four-year-old guy is still attending high school. Well, as a werewolf, I started late because I looked too built and developed for my age when I was a teen. I was home-schooled until I started attending high school. My parents manipulated my age for me, and now my schoolmates think we are age mates. My mother would always go ahead and say, "Don't mind his body. He is much younger than he looks." And that seems to do the trick. No best friends. In fact, no friends at all. My parents' friends are not true friends as they are solely friends for business. I didn't play around when I was young as my father made sure that I was exclusively within the house—as a werewolf who had not learned how to control his power, my father feared I might blow our cover. So, I had a beta chosen for me, but we didn't have a strong connection. There was nothing more than a formal Alpha-to-Beta relationship between us. For five months, I reigned over the Emberheart Pack without my father, but with a mother who loved living extravagantly. My mother, Catherine, took over my dad's business after his death while I took over the pack. This was our arrangement until the day my mother came home and said we would be running my father's business with another person's. At first, I didn't think much of it. After making inquiries about the new business partner, I discovered it was a win-win situation, mainly because my mother couldn't handle the entire business by herself. The situation was fine until it wasn't: I later discovered the transaction was about more than just business. They were merging maritally. My mother was getting married to another man just five months after my father's death. Despite the countless arguments we had, she went ahead and did what she wanted, and I couldn't really stop her. She was still a young, vibrant woman, so I couldn't stop her. She had her own life to live, just as I had mine, until she started taking over mine as well. The day we went to her new husband's house, I discovered he was a human. He was a bloody human being. The wife of a dead Alpha werewolf was remarrying a human. He had no idea who my mother really was... or did he? Still deliberating on whether he knew about my mother's true identity was the least of my problems. Then I discovered he had a daughter. A very beautiful human daughter. The moment I stepped into the house of a mundane, the real story behind the scenes began to unfold.
