Episode 9: Prove It

1312 Words
“Adrian,” the man said again, stepping fully into their space. “You’ve been keeping secrets.” Elena turned a bit, her attention drawn to him. He looked like he fit in here. Of course he did. In a tailored suit with an easy confidence, he had a presence that didn’t need to shout for attention—it was already understood. His eyes flicked over to her. Sharp. Interested. And then— Amused. “Well,” he said, “aren’t you going to introduce us?” Elena felt the weight of his gaze instantly. This wasn’t just casual curiosity. This was evaluation. Public. Deliberate. A test. Her pulse quickened. Not panic. Not exactly. But close enough to feel it edging in. Adrian stood still. No movement. He kept his hand resting on her back. “This is Elena,” he said. Straightforward. Simple. But it didn’t feel like enough. The man raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?” A pause. Then his gaze returned to her, slower this time. Measuring. “Just Elena?” There it was. The challenge. Clear. Deliberate. Elena felt tension build in her chest. He was asking without asking. Who are you? Why are you here? What makes you think you belong? Her fingers curled slightly by her sides. Her mind raced. Too fast. Don’t hesitate. Don’t falter. Don’t give them anything. She raised her chin just a bit. Enough to make her point. “Elena Hart,” she stated. Her voice sounded steady. Controlled. Good. “I didn’t think I needed more than a name to stand here.” A flicker of surprise crossed his face. Quick. But genuine. Then— A slow smile. “Depends on where you’re standing.” Her pulse quickened again. “Then I’ll adjust.” His gaze sharpened. “Oh?” He stepped a bit closer. Not overstepping. But testing the boundaries. “And how do you plan to do that?” The room felt quieter now. Not silent. But focused. Nearby people had started to pay attention. Subtle. But obvious enough. Elena felt it closing in from all sides. Watching. Waiting. Her heartbeat thudded louder. But this time— She didn’t resist it. She didn’t try to hide it. She harnessed it. “You asked who I am,” she said. A moment passed. “I’m the one standing next to him.” The words landed clearly. Not loud. But impactful. The man’s smile faltered just a notch. Because that— That wasn’t submission. That wasn’t uncertainty. That was a declaration. And everyone heard it. Elena felt the shift ripple out. Small. But real. The man scrutinized her for a moment longer. Then— He laughed. Low. Genuine. “I like her,” he said, looking at Adrian. “She’s not what I expected.” Adrian stayed silent. Still. But his hand on her back— Pressed just a fraction more. Approval? Maybe. Her heart raced. The man looked back at her. “Still,” he said, “standing next to him isn’t easy.” Elena met his gaze firmly. “I didn’t think it would be.” “Good answer.” A brief silence. Then— “But answers aren’t what matter here.” Her stomach tightened. “What does?” He tilted his head slightly. “Proof.” The word sat heavy in her chest. Of course. There was always another layer. Another test. Another way to push. “And what exactly do I need to prove?” she asked. “That you can stay.” Simple. Direct. Dangerous. Her heart skipped a beat. Because that— That wasn't just about tonight. That was about everything. Before she could respond— He continued. “There’s a deal going down tonight,” he said. “Important. High stakes.” Elena’s focus sharpened. Business. Good. Something tangible. Something she could latch onto. “Adrian doesn’t bring distractions into situations like that,” he added. The implication hung there. Clear. Sharp. Elena felt the tension again. “You think I’m a distraction,” she said. “I think you’re untested.” Her jaw clenched. “That’s not the same thing.” “No,” he agreed. “But it leads to the same outcome.” Silence filled the space. Her chest rose slowly. Steady. Controlled. “Then test me,” she said, the words spilling out before she could second-guess herself. Once they were out— She stood by them. Didn’t backtrack. The man's brows lifted. Interest piqued. “Oh?” Elena didn’t flinch. “You want proof,” she pressed on. “Give me something real.” Her heart raced. Fast. But her voice remained steady. “Not just questions and assumptions.” A moment passed. Then— “Something that truly matters.” The silence stretched. Longer this time. The man glanced at Adrian. Brief. Meaningful. Then back to her. “You're serious.” “I don’t waste time.” Another brief pause. Then— A nod. “Alright.” Elena’s chest tightened. This was it. Whatever was going on— It was becoming real now. “There’s a meeting in twenty minutes,” he said. “Private. Select attendees only.” Her heart kicked harder. “You’ll sit in.” She blinked. That— That wasn’t what she’d expected. “You’ll observe,” he continued. “Listen. Pay attention.” Her mind raced. Fast. Sharp. “And then?” she asked. His gaze held hers. “And then you speak.” Her breath hitched. “What?” “You heard me.” Her chest tightened sharply. “That’s not—” “You wanted a real test,” he interrupted smoothly. “This is a real test.” Her heart raced. Too fast. Speaking in that room? With people like him? People who lived and thrived in this world— Who would tear her apart the second she slipped? Her throat felt tight. Words didn’t come immediately. For a split second— Just one— Doubt crept in. Cold. Sharp. You can’t do this. But then— Adrian’s voice. Calm. Steady. Right next to her. “You can.” Her breath stumbled. She turned slightly. Looked at him. Really looked. And for the first time— There was no control in his expression. No calculation. Just— Certainty. In her. Her pulse faltered. That— That resonated differently. Stronger than anything else tonight. She swallowed slowly. Then turned back to the man. “Fine,” she said. Her voice wasn’t loud. But it held firm. “I’ll do it.” The man smiled again. This time, satisfied. “Good.” A brief pause. Then— “Let’s see if you belong.” --- As he stepped back— That weight returned. Heavier. Sharper. More real than anything before. Elena exhaled slowly. Her chest tight. Her thoughts racing. “That was a bad idea,” she muttered. Adrian didn’t react. “No,” he replied. Her eyebrows knitted together slightly. “Then why didn’t you stop it?” A moment passed. Then— “Because you didn’t want me to.” Her breath caught. Because— Because he was right. Again. Her jaw tightened a fraction. “I could still walk away.” “You could.” He didn’t try to stop her. Didn’t challenge her. Didn’t even look like he anticipated it. And somehow— That felt worse. Her heart raced harder. Faster. Because now— It was no longer about him. It was about her. Her choice. Her decision. Her boundary. Elena exhaled slowly. Then stood tall. “No,” she said. Quiet. Certain. “I won’t.” A brief pause. Then— “Good,” Adrian said. And for the first time— There was something in his voice that wasn’t about control. Wasn’t about strategy. Something softer. Something that lingered longer than it should have.
