CHAPTER ONE: The night
NARRATOR’S POV Alpha Monroe’s jaw clenched in anguish and his eyes filled with tears as he held on desperately to his mate’s hands as her breathing started to sound even more laboured, seeing his mate in so much pain without being able to do anything about it tore his heart into a thousand pieces, he resisted the urge to growl and ask everyone else to stay away from her. Her previous deliveries hadn’t been nearly as painful or bloody. “You are doing so well, my love. This will be over soon.” he reassured her, trying to convince himself in the process. “I can see the head! It is almost over, you just need to push one more time, Luna.” The pack midwife yelled but even her couldn’t keep the dread out of her voice. The labour had lasted too long and she had lost too much blood. Luna Mevlyn looked into loving eyes of her mate and pushed one last time with as loud scream, the sound of a baby’s cry filled the room and all eyes turned to the little bundle of flesh in the midwife’s hands. “ It is a girl, Luna.” she said looking up with a smile. Rose sighed and her body relaxed, “Let me hold her,” she whispered. The older woman wrapped the baby in a cloth and placed her on Mevlyn’s chest. Rose cradled her baby with weak arms. “Doesn’t she look beautiful, Monroe?” Monroe peered at his daughter’s face as he cleaned the sweat of his Mevlyn’s forehead and caressed her hair. “She is the most beautiful baby in the world.” He smiled. Mevlyn coughed violently and the midwife yelped. “She is bleeding again,” she announced, alarmed. Monroe collected the baby from Mevlyn’s hand and his heart started to beat faster. “Can’t you stop the bleeding?!” The midwife shook her head sadly as the omegas assisting her tried to put pressure to stop the bleeding. Mevlyn weakly pulled on her mate’s sleeve and he turned to her. “Can you hold my hand?” she asked softly. Monroe handed the baby to someone else and knelt down beside her bed and held her hands in his. “Don’t you worry, you’re going to be okay.” “You are the best thing that I could have ever asked for, “ she started with a fainted smile. “I need you to promise me you won’t grieve too much and lose yourself, for our children” “Don’t speak like this, Mevlyn. You are not going anywhere, you are going to get better and stay by my side.” Mevlyn smiled softly, “You are the strongest and kindest man I know and everyone in this pack is blessed to have you as their alpha. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to spend my life with.” “Mevlyn I can’t lose you…” his voice broke “I will always love you and I know I will live on in your heart but I need you to promise me, Monroe, promise me you will always be there for our children. “I promise.” he said as his wolf whimpered in his head. Mevlyn smiled softly, “I love you,” “I love you too,” Monroe whispered, he prayed desperately to the moon goddess to spare the life of his mate and best friend. Within the next few minutes, he watched helplessly as the last bit of life drained out of her eyes, he felt the pain in his entire the body the second she was gone, it felt like someone ripped out his entire being leaving only a shell. He felt her absence in his mind, he had lost a part of himself. Somewhere in the room the baby stared crying, it was as if she too felt the death of her mother. In the middle of his turmoil, he looked at the wailing baby in the arms of the midwife, she had a red birthmark on her collarbone that resembled the shape of the moon, just like her mother, Monroe swore to himself and his mate that he would care for their children and love tem enough for two people. He swore to make sure they never feel the absence of their mother. But a life without Mevlyn was almost unimaginable, they had been mated for twenty years and had been each other’s person since then. He blinked back the tears that threatened to fall, not wanting to breakdown in front of his pack, he placed a kiss on his daughter’s head and took off into the woods. His clothes shredded into pieces as he morphed into his wolf form, his giant paws landed on the forest floor with deadly grace sending leaves scattering around him, the forest was unusually quiet as every creature disappeared from site as their apex predator mourned the loss of his mate. Monroe’s wolf took over and ran and ran but that did nothing to ease the pain, he stopped and stood on the top of a hill and howled loudly into the night, his heart-wrenching howl could be heard in all parts of the pack and forest, the rest of the northwood pack howled in response as they mourned alongside their alpha for the loss of their luna. Little Brienne fussed restlessly on the arms of the nursemaid, she had no way of knowing what was going on but it was almost like she could sense that there was sadness in the air. Ten year old Bernard, held his crying younger, Ian in his arms and stared into thin air. They both saw their father run out of their mother’s chambers without glancing at them, and a few minutes later, the midwife came out with the baby that was their younger sister but no one said anything about their mother. Bernard didn’t completely understand what was going on but when they heard their father’s howl from the forest, he knew something was definitely wrong. Ian stared crying and he was sure he heard the woman holding his fussing baby sister sniffle once or twice. And still there was no sign of their mother, that was when he knew that his mother was dead. The night wore on, the baby stopped fussing and Ian eventually stopped crying and fell asleep but the alpha didn’t return home that night.
