Chapter Four: Skipping School

1430 Words
"Mom, you won't understand . My friend addressed one if the boys as sir. Mom, isn't that absurd?" Ava said. "That is absurd, yes but my dear, that isn't your cross to carry. In other words, Ava, you have to mind your business over there." Mrs Miller advised. Ava got up angrily and wore her footwear so fast. "Good night, mom." Ava said. "Ava, don't walk out when I'm trying to correct like like some immature damsel." Mrs Miller said. Ava sighed heavily and said, "By the way, mom, where is Jake? I haven't seen that him since I left for school." "He's in his room sleeping. He hasn't been feeling well right from the time you left for school." Mrs Miller replied. "Oh yeah. I remember he told me he was gonna be skipping school today 'cause he was feeling funny. I hope he gets better though. I haven't spent quality time with him throughout today. I fell like I'm neglecting him already." Ava said, feeling guilty. "Don't say that, dear. You've been occupied with school stuff. That's not neglect." Mrs Miller said. "I do hope he gets better though. May God help him." Ava prayed. "Amen, dear. He will. You see, there is actually no need to worry 'cause Jake and I visited the doctor earlier and she prescribed some pills for him. I got them and now, I can say he is getting alright. He will be fine in no time." Mrs Miller said. "That's good to hear, mom. I feel very relieved." Ava said and yawned. "Feeling sleepy?" Mrs Miller asked. "Totally. I'm gonna drink a cup of milk and I'll call it a day." Ava said and headed to the kitchen. "Good night dear. Sleep tight." Mrs Miller said to Ava. Ava got to her room, drinking her milk. There is nothing a cup of milk can't fix, especially the frustration from the school and everything she had experienced that day. After a while, her phone gave a notification tone. Ava rarely gets messages after she and her family relocated. She lost contacts of all her friends and was about making a few new ones, starting from school. The notification made her shocked. "A message? From who? Perhaps it's Della." Ava said to herself. She quickly checked her phone to see who had sent the message. She checked and saw that it was actually Della. She guessed right. It read "Hi Ava. You might be probably sleeping or busy with something. There's this competition our school is having and I really want you to participate. Just tap in the link below and learn more about the competition. I will add you to our school group chat to keep you updated on the school's latest happenings. Good night and see you tomorrow." "Della must be kidding. I mean I just got there and then, I start participating in competitions. It's giving "I want to be noticed and be recognized by all means." There's no way I'll take part in the competition. At least, not yet. I just got there. I still have to completely adjust. Della is being unreasonable." Ava said, reacting to the message she got from Della. After a few minutes, Ava was added to the school group chat. "Thanks, Della. See you in school tomorrow too. Good night." Ava texted back. * *. * "Hurry up, Ava. Jake. You both are gonna be late for school." Mrs Miller said. "Mom, I'll be ready in a few minutes." Ava said. On her way downstairs, she bumped into Jake. "Woah!" Jake exclaimed. "Morning, Jake. I see you are already for school today." Ava said. "Yeah, Ava. Your baby brother is now well. I'm sure I missed a whole lot of drama yesterday at school." Jake said. "That's positive. Well, we better hurry else we will be late and mom will be very furious at us." Ava said. Immediately, they both ran downstairs. "Be careful on the stairs, kids." Mrs Miller said. "Mom, we'll pass breakfast. We are already running late." Ava said. Mrs Miller sighed and said, " No matter what, ava, you both are gonna eat breakfast. I can't pack this for you to take to school. I did that yesterday." "Mom, what about me? I skipped school yesterday remember." Jake asked. "Jake, you have taken your breakfast to school countless times and you know that. I can't keep on doing that, okay? If you are gonna eat breakfast here, then wake up earlier in order to eat before running late." Mrs Miller said. "Mom, we are freaking late and moreover, I have violin lessons by eight. That's less than fifteen minutes." Jake said. Mrs Miller paused for a while and said, "Alright, I will have your breakfasts packed..........." "Thank you, mom." Ava and Jake said simultaneously. ".....only because of Jake's violin lessons but Jake, you know you are on medication, you have to eat very early. As soon as you get to school, do not hesitate to eat." Mrs Miller continued. "Noted, mom."Jake said. Mrs Miller began packing the food. Then she handed it over to them. "Thank you, mom. I gotta go now. Jake, I will see you later."Ava said and left the house. The day seemed really bright and good for ava. She was pleased with the cool, friendly weather and the cold breeze that paraded the streets. Immediately, an odd thing happened. All of a sudden, ava forgot the way to her school!!! What's worse was that she documented the school address in the same book Ava was with. So Ava was left with only one option. Not to skip school actually but to return home and ask her mom for the school address. How embarrassing. Well, it was for the best. Luckily for Ava, she hadn't gone too far from home. Meanwhile at home, ava's phone rang continuously. It really disturbed Mrs Miller and she was forced to answer the call. "Hello?" Mrs Miller said. "Hello, ava. It's della. Why aren't you in school by this time? It's pretty late." Della asked. "Wait, what? Ava isn't in school yet?" Mrs Miller asked. Della was shocked to her Mrs Miller reveal herself on the phone. "Sorry, who am I speaking with?" Della asked. "This is Ava's mom. I'm sure Ava is at school already. You just haven't seen her yet." Mrs Miller replied. Della argued with Mrs Miller about Ava's whereabouts. "I'm sure ava isn't in school, Mrs Miller. Lessons are about to start yet she still isn't in her classroom." She revealed. Mrs Miller got confused. "But why? She left home a while ago." Mrs Miller said. After Mrs Miller had said this, she heard a knock on the door. "Sweetheart, please call me back as soon as you see ava. I have to attend to something." Mrs Miller said and hung up the call. "Who's there?" Mrs Miller asked. "It's me, mom." Ava answered. "Oh my goodness. Ava. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in school?" Mrs Miller asked as she opened up for ava. "Mom, I really don't know what came over me but I think I can't remember the school address anymore." Ava replied. "What!!! I don't understand." Mrs Miller freaked out. "Mom, you're freaking out." Ava said. "Of course 'cause it's so absurd. What could have made you lose your school address?" Mrs Miller responded. "Supposing there was an assessment test, you would have missed it obviously or probably, been late for the test. I couldn't even believe it when a friend of yours told me earlier on phone......" Mrs Miller said. "Oh really, Della called?" Ava interrupted. "Keep quiet when I'm talking to you, young lady." Mrs Miller scolded. Ava got very livid at that moment. "You know what mom, I need the school address from you. I'm not really in the mood for drama." Ava said, rudely. "Excuse me?" Mrs Miller asked. "You said it yourself, didn't you? That I'm so late to school. Don't you think all these drama can make me later to school?" Ava continued. "You know what, ava, there will be no need for all of these. You are gonna be skipping school today. Besides, you are late already. You can't embarrass me or yourself by coming late on your second day." Mrs Miller said. "What?" Ava said in shock. "You heard me, young lady. You are skipping school today and you know what that means, right? You are following me to the Mini Mart. So get dressed. We leave by ten." Mrs Miller ordered.
