Five ordinary friends

The rain still hadn’t stopped by lunchtime. Dark clouds covered the sky above Westbridge Academy, making the entire school feel colder than usual. Thunder echoed faintly outside while students crowded through the cafeteria carrying trays of food and talking loudly. At the table near the windows, the five friends sat together like always. Jax was currently balancing a spoon on his nose. You need serious help,Elena said without even looking up from her book. Its called talent. It’s called embarrassment. Kai sat beside them quietly eating fries while half-listening to their argument. Across from him, Lyra was sketching something inside her notebook instead of eating. Zion leaned back in his chair silently, scrolling through his phone. Everything looked normal. Felt normal. But Kai still couldn’t shake the feeling from last night. The rooftop figure. The dream. The strange symbols. His thoughts drifted again until You’re staring. Kai blinked. Lyra looked at him curiously. What? You’ve been staring at the same fry for like two minutes. Jax immediately grinned. Maybe he’s in love with the fry. Kai threw the fry at him. Jax dodged dramatically. “VIOLENCE!” Elena sighed. We’re surrounded by idiots. Lyra laughed softly, and Kai found himself smiling without meaning to. For a moment, the strange fear inside him faded. This was normal. This was safe. Then the cafeteria lights flickered. Everyone paused. The lights returned. A few students laughed nervously before continuing their conversations. But Zion frowned slightly. You guys feel that? Kai looked at him. Feel what? Zion glanced around the cafeteria slowly. I don’t know Before he could finish, a loud crash echoed outside. Students near the windows screamed. Everyone turned instantly. A giant tree near the courtyard had completely split in half. Smoke rose from the broken wood. It got struck by lightning? Elena guessed. No,Zion said quietly. Kai noticed it too. The tree wasn’t burned. It looked exploded. A strange silence filled the cafeteria. Then every phone inside the room suddenly lost signal at once. The lights flickered again. Harder this time. The air felt heavier. Uncomfortable. Kai’s chest tightened suddenly That feeling again. Like something invisible was crawling beneath his skin. Then Lyra dropped her pencil. Her eyes widened slightly. Kai What? Before she could answer SCREEEEEECH. A horrible sound echoed through the school. Students covered their ears painfully. The windows trembled violently. And somewhere deep below the building Something growled. The entire cafeteria went silent. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Then the fire alarms suddenly exploded throughout the school. Red emergency lights flashed across the walls. Students panicked instantly. What’s happening?! Is it an earthquake?! RUN! Chaos erupted everywhere. Teachers tried controlling the crowd while students pushed toward the exits. Kai stood quickly. Stay together, he said immediately. For some reason, the words came naturally. Like instinct. The five friends pushed through the terrified students together as the building shook again. Dust fell from the ceiling. Another horrible screech echoed closer this time. Then BOOM. One of the cafeteria windows shattered inward. Students screamed. A dark creature crawled through the broken glass. It was massive. Too thin to be human. Its body looked made of living shadows, with glowing red eyes and twisted claws dragging across the floor. Everyone froze in horror. The creature slowly tilted its head. Smiling. Then it attacked. People scattered instantly. Tables flipped over while students ran in every direction. Kai’s body moved before his brain could think. MOVE! he shouted, shoving Lyra out of the creature’s path. The monster slammed into a wall where she had been standing seconds earlier. Concrete cracked from the impact. Jax stared in shock. WHAT IS THAT THING?! The creature turn ed toward them again. Its glowing eyes locked directly onto Kai. And somehow Kai knew. It came for him.
