Chapter Four: I Was Hired

1970 Words
I knew myself to be an early riser, especially if I had business to take care of. I was up before the sun rose into the sky properly. I may or may not have had a lot of sleep the night before because of nerves, I was jittery and nervous. Lucy tried her best to calm my emotions, but there was only so much Lucy could say to help me. Mia was getting herself ready for me to drop her off for her first day of school, after which I would be making the commute to BPD (Brown’s Powerhouse Designs) for my eight o clock interview. I was dressed smartly in a formal black suit completed with my glasses perched on my nose for added sophistication. My hair was tied back in a neat bun and there was little to no makeup on my face. I decided that simple is the best way to go for an interview, and I didn’t need to show off my beauty to the interviewer. After all, it isn’t a beauty pageant, it is a work interview. I looked like a private school mistress with that menacing look on her face, only thing I had missing was a cane or a ruler to walk around with. I shook my head at the thoughts going through my head and poured myself a cup of coffee from the new coffee machine Lucy gifted me as a house warming gift. Lucy was too much sometimes but I wouldn’t have it any other way. After Mia was done getting ready, we both grabbed our respective bags and went through the door, into the elevator and down to the lobby. A taxi was waiting out front from when I called to have one on standby as I didn’t believe I would have the time to flag one down. Both I and Mia got in the car and the driver pulled away from the curb. Mia’s hair was combed into two little pigtails with cute pink bows tied around them. She dressed herself in a cute frilly pink top with balloon sleeves and a jeans pants with white sneakers. I was very proud of her for her fashion sense and how well she could dress herself. I might have had to adjust her jeans a little bit but overall, Mia was dressed beautifully for her first day of school. Her little mermaid backpack and lunch kit accompanied her as she jumped down from the cab as it pulled up outside her new school. I asked the driver politely if he could wait a few seconds while I ran inside with Mia to ensure that she was settled properly. The driver grumbled a bit about getting extra pay and eventually agreed to wait when I told him I would pay him the extra money. Everything was taken care of at the school all thanks to the angelic friend I had by the name of Lucy. Thankfully, I didn’t have to stay with Mia very long, she was already making friends. I thanked the driver for waiting and told him the address of my final stop. The driver pulled up to the curb of the tall building a few minutes later and turned to me expectantly. I rolled my eyes and pulled out the cash from my purse and handed it to the cab driver. “Thank you.” The man sniped sarcastically. “You’re welcome.” I said, just as sarcastic. I got out of the stuffy cab and made my way inside the building foyer. As much as I wanted to gape at the open planned design of what I could see, I knew it would be inappropriate of me and not at all sophisticated. I made my way to the receptionist desk and cleared my throat at the young woman at the desk. “Uh, excuse me?” I said shyly. I really wasn’t the best at meeting new people. “Yes Ma’am how can I help you?” The young woman asked politely. I wasn’t expecting the woman to be so polite to me. I was expecting a rude, obnoxious response from the woman. Guess I read too many books with inaccurate information. “Uh, I’m here for my 8 o clock appointment about the opening of an Architectural Designer.” I responded to the woman. “And your name?” the young woman began typing on her computer. “Jessica Smith.” “Ah, Ms Smith, you’re early.” The woman said surprised. “Yeah. I hope that’s not a problem.” I said sheepishly. I had a habit of being everywhere before the scheduled time. It was both a blessing and a curse. “No, not at all. Mr Brown doesn’t appreciate tardiness so you’ll fit right in.” She smiled kindly. “Just take that elevator there up to the 9th floor and tell the receptionist there that you’re here for the interview.” “Thank you so much.” I said gratefully, and made my way to the elevator. I followed the kind woman’s words and pressed the 9th floor and waited for the doors to close. The doors opened on the 9th floor and just as the lady in the lobby said, there was another receptionist desk with a red haired lady sitting there typing something on her computer. “Can I help you?” She asked without even lifting her head from her screen. “Yes. I’m here for an interview for the opening position of Architectural Design.” I answered somewhat confidently. “You’re Ms Smith?” I didn’t like how the woman asked the question, as if I was a nuisance to her. I didn’t know the woman and had no desire to know her if her attitude was so sour. “Yes, I am.” I answered simply. The woman looked me up and down and scoffed under her breath. I so badly wanted to ask her what the problem was, but I didn’t want to blow my chances before I even got the opportunity. “You can have a seat over there. He’ll be with you shortly.” The woman aimed a fake smile at me and went back to typing on her computer. I sat down and took in the simple but beautiful design of the corridor I was in. There were three big paintings behind the receptionist desk that looked as if they connected in one but came on separate charts. Potted plants were placed strategically in each corner of the space giving it a relaxed and calm feeling. The seats that I was seated on were very soft and plush, cream in colour to match the walls. The big receptionist desk had a huge sign in the front marked BP Designs. The nameplate on the desk said that the miserable woman’s name was Gretchen. Very fitting name, I thought. “He’ll see you now. Third door on the right in that hallway.” Gretchen spoke snapping me out of my ogling. “Thank you.” I decided to be kind to the woman despite her being nasty to me. I walked past the woman who rolled her eyes at me one more time. I knocked on the third door on the right of the corridor per Gretchen’s directions. “Come in.” a voice said from behind the door. I pushed open the door into a big and beautiful office. The first thing my eyes landed on was the beautiful scenery from this office through the windows, we were so high up I could see into the other offices if I looked hard enough. The walls on the left side of the room were lined with bookcases filled to the brim with books, I wondered if this man read any of the books or if they were there just for show. The right side of the room had a small seating area with a mini fridge and a chess table. In the centre of the room was the big mahogany desk with two plush couches in front of it. Behind that desk sat a man who had his blazer removed and thrown over the back of his chair. He was just sat there in his pants and baby blue dress shirt with an expensive watch on his wrist. He was busily scribbling something on a piece of paper while muttering to himself. When he finally realized that he wasn’t alone in the room anymore, he cleared his throat and told me to have a seat. I gingerly sat down in one of the extremely comfortable chairs and folded my hands in my lap. “Ms Smith, thank you so much for being here. My name is Mason Angelo but you can just call me Mason, I’m the lead designer here at Brown’s Powerhouse Designs. I read your resume and I must say I’m very impressed with your credentials.” I beamed at the words I was hearing. “But I must ask Ms Smith, what are you wearing?” Mason looked up at her and the ugly glasses she was wearing on her face. Mason could see that the woman before him was very beautiful but she chose to cover her beauty in such ugly garments such as the oversized blazer and grandma skirt she was wearing. “Um,” “Don’t answer that Ms Smith. If you should work here, your style must improve.” Before Mason could further embarrass me, a knock sounded on the door before Gretchen poked her head inside. “Mason, Robert’s here.” “What? What is he doing here? He’s not supposed to be down here today.” Mason began muttering to himself. “I’m sorry Ms Smith, you don’t make the cut. You know where to find the elevator.” Mason walked out to greet Robert in the hallway leaving me to process the fact that I got shut down for a position all because I wasn’t dressed like a model. I walked out into the hallway behind Mason to hear him speaking with the Robert person. He must be pretty important if he has Gretchen behaving civilized. “It must be hailing outside. What are you doing here?” Mason questioned. “Last I checked, I own the company.” The man answered. My eyes widen as I heard the man answer. His deep voice sounded a little familiar but I had no way to pinpoint it. “It’s just weird for you to be down here is all I’m saying.” Mason answered. “What is that in your hand?” Robert asked. “Oh, it’s just a resume for someone I was interviewing, but she didn’t make the cut.” “Let me see.” Robert took the paper from Mason while looking over Mason’s shoulder straight at me. “Is that her?” Robert asked while still staring at me. “Yes.” Mason answered. Robert skimmed his eyes over my resume and hummed to himself. “Hire her.” “Excuse me?” Mason startled. Robert stared at the young man with his icy eyes and Mason nodded his head like an obedient puppy. “Yes of course sir.” I could tell that Mason wasn’t happy about me joining the team but he was going to have to suck it up because the boss man said to hire me and he can’t go against what the boss said. “Welcome to the team Ms Smith. Report for work tomorrow morning at 8 sharp.” Mason begrudgingly said. “Thank you. I’ll be here.” I smiled as best as I could. I just got the job from the man who looked familiar but I couldn’t place. I couldn’t wait to tell Lucy.
