The Moment of Truth

“Dad, why am I feeling this way?” asked Jette.

“Because it is God’s will,” explained his Dad.

“Why me?” asked Jette.

“No, don’t ask God why you… Tell the world, TRY ME,” said her Dad.

“But Dad, I’m only human. I guess I cannot take it any longer,” said Jette.

(Jette told her Dad what her brother did to her.)

“Tsk, it’s all my fault, Jette. Whatever he is today, it’s all because of me,” said her Dad.

“Don’t worry, I will try to talk to him,” added her Dad.

Wednesday, end of the 1st quarter… Mr. Arden, Jette’s Dad, came to meet John…

“Why are you here?” asked John.

“Can I come in?” asked Mr. Arden.

“Yes, you can…” said John.

“Did you know about Jette, right?” asked Mr. Arden.

“About what?” asked John.

“That she’s your sister?” said Mr. Arden.

“No. She’s not my sister. She is the only child or Mr. and Mrs. Arden,” added John.

“John, have you remembered your Mom? She was at the peak of her mental breakdown when she left me for another man, right?” asked his Dad.

“Yes, Dad. I know everything that’s why I decided to go away… I don’t like being treated like a pig. I was watching them making love. I was a little kiddo sitting at one corner of the room, and watching them,” said John.

“I’m sorry I discovered it late, John. I was supposed to be there,” explained Mr. Arden.

“No, Dad, it’s not your fault. I even understand your decision to marry another woman while Mom is at the mental facility,” added John.

“No, John. The whole time that you’re with your grandparent’s house, I was always there for Candy. I didn’t stop being a husband despite everything she did. When she died because of d**g overdose, it took me sometime to recover. Yes, she intentionally stole the bottle of antibiotics from the mental facility’s storage room, and took all of those,” Mr. Arden explained.

“Really, Dad?” asked John. “Then how come, you have a daughter younger than me if you didn’t marry another girl too early?” added John.

“Jette? Jette is there all those times,” said his Dad.

“Huh? I don’t understand,” said John.

“You see, John, while your Mom was doing those things, the “making love” with another man, the overdose of drugs, and all the hurtful words she spoke on me, she’s bearing my child. Yes, she is pregnant with your sister, Jette,” explained his Dad.

(Upon hearing those words, John shouted aloud, and cried so hard.)

“Oh God!!!!!!!!! Why??? I ruined the life of my own sister!!!!!!!!!!” cried John.

“Yes, I know… That’s why I’m here…” explained his Dad.

John went to the church, and prayed…

“My dear God, I am deeply sorry for everything I did… I ruined the life of my own sister because I thought she’s the product of my Dad’s infidelity with my Mom just because my Mom had a mental disease. I am sorry because I put revenge over love and understanding. Jette has been so good to me. She used to teach at the school where I teach, and I did everything I could just to ruin her reputation at school. I was the one who pushed Brent to court her, and when they became lovers, I was the one who destroyed it. I also was the one who spread all the rumors about the f*******n teacher-student relationship. I was the one to blame if my sister’s life is at its worst right now. I need to do something good to make it up for her. Please give me God another chance to correct my mistake. Whatever punishment You will give to me, I will wholeheartedly accept it. AMEN.”

John asked the principal of the school to call Jette for a meeting with John in line with his complaint. Also, he asked Brent to come during the said meeting. He set up a loudspeaker outside the school for everyone to hear.

*At the principal’s office:

Principal: Good morning Ms. Arden, and also to you John and Brent.

Jette: *Just nodded her head and smiled.

Brent: Good morning, Ma’am.

John: Good morning everyone.

Principal: I asked all of you to come here because John here will have something to say regarding the status of his complaint against you, Bridgette.

**Outside: Everyone stopped, looked for a place to sit and listen…

John: Good morning everyone once again. I would like to personally ask an apology to the person I owe a lot with. I am deeply sorry, Ms. Bridgette Arden for the worst things you have experienced here at school.

Jette: *shocked* Am I dreaming?

John: No, I am here bending my knees and asking for your forgiveness. **he cried heavily**

**Outside: Everyone is in shock. It was like a scene in movies.

Jette: I cannot comprehend.

John: Jette, my baby sister, I’m sorry…

Jette: How did you know? Come on, get up… and let’s forget everything.

John: No. I should be punished. Madame Principal, I would like to confess everything. I was the one who pushed Brent here to court my sister. I didn’t know that she’s my sister during that time. I was so angry at her because I thought she stole my father from me. I asked my friend, actually my lover before, Brent to court Jette. If there is someone that should be punished for having an illicit relationship with a student, that should be me. Brent courted her and eventually fell in love with her, I didn’t know what to do because the plan did not go as planned, so I ruined them both. When Brent told me that Jette decided to resign as a teacher because of their relationship, and that Jette didn’t want to tain her reputation as a teacher at the same time she doesn’t want to reject the love being offered by Brent, I created a gossip that ruined the reputation of my sister. With all those bad intentions and plans against my sister, I must be punished Madame Principal.

Principal: Decorum please! Sit down everyone. With all of these, I would like to ask for Brent’s side.

Brent: All of those were true Madame. I even didn’t know that the game of courting Ms. Arden would turn out to be true. I fell in love with her and I’m guilty and sad with everything she has suffered while being my girlfriend. I am sorry, Ms. Arden. I too need to be punished.

Principal: Okay, we’re very sorry Ms. Arden for how this school treated you. We need a brainly teacher like you here. Will you still consider?

Jette: Thanks Ma’am. All of those are misunderstandings. I am already healed by what this school brought me. I am forgiving you, Brent and John. I am already happily engaged, and I’m happy that John here admitted his fault. But, Madame Principal, I am sorry I cannot accept your offer. I am already committed to work at a government agency in the nearby city. Thanks anyway for the nice offer.

Principal: No worries, Mr. Arden. And as for you, John… you’re fired. I am sorry but this school needs sometime to heal from the scandalous actuations you made as a teacher. To you Brent, I must expel you to ensure that no school will accept you but I need to ask for Ms. Arden’s suggestion first, and whatever her decision will be, I will follow it. So, Jette?

(Brent cries, looking terribly worried, and trying to look Jette in the eyes but Jette avoided his stares)

Jette: Ma’am, what Brent did to me is unforgettable. Imagine leaving me a month before our wedding, and giving all the blame on me. He said it’s cold feet, but just a mature advice for your future reference, Brent, if you’re not sure about a girl, do not propose… do not even try to offer your love because for every tear a girl sheds for a boy who hurts her, God will take revenge for her. It’s not me to take revenge, it’s God’s will. Now, I cannot put all the blame on my brother, John. You have your free will. Why would you try to court me if you do not like me in the first place? You played with my emotions, and my family’s emotions as well. I may and can recommend for your expulsion, but I will not do it, Brent. I am not like you. With all of these, Madame Principal, can I ask to be excused. I need to go.

Principal: Yes, of course Ms. Arden. Thanks, and sorry once again.

Jette runs through her car crying, and John followed her.

*At the car

John: Jette, I am sorry my baby sister…

Jette: You should have not done it, John… Even to someone who’s not your sister, you should have not done that. It just crushed my entire system… It crushed my heart. (Jette cried)

John: (crying) I am sorry, I love you my sister.

Jette: *hugged him* Yes, you’re forgiven… But don’t let me talk to that Brent once again. I mean, I’m mad because I knew it, he courted me for no apparent reason. We’re not even friends… And out of the blue, he gave me the attention every gift wants. It’s not because of your inducement, I mean, hey, he has a free will. We all have a free will.

John: Baby girl, listen to me… I blackmailed Brent. That’s why he did it.

Jette: Huh??? How bad have you become, John???

John: Yes… So, come… (They both went down the car) I need you both to talk to each other. You may not rekindle your love story, but I just want you to clear everything as a closure.

Jette: (nodded)

(Silence)

Brent: Jette, can I invite you to eat there (he points at the nearby restaurant) because I am so hungry?

Jette: Just a couple of minutes, Brent. I don’t want to be seen with someone other than my fiancé.

Brent: Yes, if you want, we just stay inside that restaurant while we talk so that no one sees us together.

Jette: Alright.

(At the restaurant)

Brent: It’s all my treat, for everything that I did to you. The truth is I waited for you, Jette. When I was about to explain my side and ask for a second chance, I just saw you walking happily with Drew. I knew it, your love for Drew never faded. That’s why I decided to court another girl. I am now in a relationship just like you, and I am just so guilty. I am not here to clear my name. I am just here to be friends again with you.

Jette: You know, Brent? I no longer have the energy to listen to negativities. Can we just be friends again? And forget everything. I mean, there’s no point in determining who’s at fault, and who’s not. We’re happily committed with our special ones already. Let’s just focus on that.

Brent: Yes, thanks a lot for understanding.

(And the two finally made a closure)

When Jette went home, there’s a surprise for her. Her Dad and John arranged a sumptuous meal for them. John, Mr. Arden, Mrs. Arden, and Jette. They had dinner, happily shared happiness with each other, made peace… and everything is perfect for them.

“John, can you move in here with us?” asked his Dad.

“Dad, much that I would like to spend more time with my baby sister and Aunt here, I just can’t,” explained John.

“Why? Your grandma is already gone, right?” asked Mr. Arden.

“Yes, but I have a partner, Dad,” explained John.

“Wow!!! Love wins,” said everyone.

(and they laugh and hugged each other)

When the clock strikes 12:00 midnight, Jette went out quickly.

“Jette! Where are you going?” asked John. He followed her.

“No, Bro!!! Don’t follow me, please!!!!!!!!!!!” said Jette.

(Jette slammed the door and locked it so no one will see her transform)

Everyone is surprised. John tried his best to go out the house, but everyone just cannot go outside because it’s locked. When her Dad went to the exit door, he found a cute furry dog. But, he didn’t mind it thinking that it’s one of the stray dogs or one of the pet dogs of their maid.
