1. Invite

Yara's POV. The bell rang as all the students stood in their seats. "Remember students," Dr Carter said as we all placed our test papers on his desk. "Your written assignment is due next week. So try not to party too hard this weekend." He concluded as he slowly began to put his things into his briefcase. Just as I was about to place my test papers on his desk with the other pile of papers. He stopped what he was doing and spoke to me. “Miss McKay,” he said excitedly. I looked at him with a smiley face. “ You're one of my star pupils, I sure expect to see your assignment on Monday.” He flashed his pearly whites. I looked over my shoulders, at the other students, hoping they wouldn’t hear Dr Carter. The last thing I needed was to be the teacher's pet. I was the teacher's pet in high school and got bullied for it. Although I heard it's far worse in college. “Of course.” I placed my test paper on the pile and basically bolted out of the room. I didn’t need him continuing with his favourite student tortured. I know I could handle that, I spent the first year enduring it so as not to offend him. This year, however, I didn’t want to be noticed. I needed not to be noticed, especially since I now know the ropes of being in college. I stick to myself whenever I have a class that my two best friends weren’t in. "Yara!" I heard Gina's voice. A huge smile came across my face as I saw her and my other friend Milo waving at me. I walked over to them as fast as I could, it was sort of hard because of the many students that were walking. There was hardly any room to move to get to them in the cafeteria. It felt like forever before I got to the table my two friends sat at, but I made it. "So, are you going to Stephanie's party tonight?" Milo asked once I sat down. I pulled my bag off my shoulders and put it beside me as I pulled out my homemade sandwich. I know I wasn’t invited by Stephanie herself. I don’t think that she would ever invite me. She was the most popular girl in the university. She had boys wanting her and girls wishing to be her. She was beautiful, so beautiful that one would think that she could be a model. Her long legs and dirty blond hair were definitely her best features and I'm not saying that they were the only perfect features of hers. They were just the best features for me. To boys, everything was perfect about her, from her forehead to her eyebrows, her pink lips all the way down to her perfectly manicured toenails. "I know I am," Gina said. "I mean, she invited me when we had a free period." She smiled. "You know I will be going to my future wife's party," Milo said, dreamingly that I rolled my eyes. They both looked at me, waiting for my response. I sighed, "I can't, I have a very important essay due next week." I shrugged my shoulders. I was never the party type. I never had time for it. Especially since I had to work so hard to get here. I didn't have any parents that saved money for me to attend college. I had no one. I worked hard in high school for a scholarship. If the orphanage I was in didn’t have a mandatory rule for us to attend school, I wouldn't have had any sort of education at all. I was thankful for that and the fact that I was presented with the opportunity to obtain a scholarship. I worked hard and got it. I did it so that once I turned eighteen I had something to do instead of being put out on the streets as many orphans do. "Come on Yara," Gina wined. "You never join us for a party." She added. "That is because I am never invited," I said in a duh tone. "Well, Stephanie has invited everyone," Milo said, not even looking at me. "Milo," I said, causing him to look at me. "Gina, both of you look at me and take a very, very, VERY long look." They looked at each other before looking at me. "I'm a nerd, all I do is get A's on everything... I wear my hair to the side in plaits, I also have braces. And let’s not forget that I'm a four-eye. " I described my nerd-like features as I tapped on my reading glasses. “Yara, you are beautiful in your own unique way,” Milo assured me. “I’m a boy and I am telling you this,” he added. “He is right.” Gina agrees with him. “Milo is a part of the popular college boy group but hangs with us. That stereotype you have right now is so high school.” She points out. “This isn’t high school.” Milo backed her up. “Everyone mingles with everyone, regardless of a person's personality or whatever you wish to call it. We’re all adults here and we all get along, even if some of us act mean towards each other. College is about experimenting, well at least that’s what my mother told me.” They both had valid reasons. I sighed. “I don’t know.” In all honesty, I didn’t want to go, I preferred to go back to my little studio and study. “I have work tomorrow, so I don’t think..” Gina cut me off. “Your shift at the café doesn't start until mid-day.” She knew my schedule for work, I don’t even know why I even bothered to use it as an excuse. “Yara.” Milo reached out and held my hand. “Don’t let your high school experience be the reason for not being social in college. You may regret it once you leave the university.” I sighed at his words. They were both right. I was letting my high school experience stop me from doing other things in college. I was a nerd in high school. It was hard, especially since I got bullied a lot. I got picked on for my ponytail and braces. I was a teacher's pet then and I didn’t want to be a teacher's pet in college. “Fine, I will go.” I surrendered. “Yes!” Milo pounded the air. “Hey, don’t forget… you have to take your braces off in an hour.” Gina reminded me. I never had the perfect smile when I was in high school. But I worked for two years and in my senior year, I got braces. Now, after a full year, I have to have them removed. I smiled at my brown-curly-haired friend. I then looked at my coffee-brown-eyed male friend. “I don’t get an invite though.” I didn’t want to show up to a party I wasn’t invited to, especially since it was Stephanie Gills. “If you didn’t get one, your definitely getting one now,” Gina smirked. I was confused by her words. “Hey.” I heard a voice behind me. A very familiar voice. I turned around and saw Stephanie Gills and two of her friends, who followed her everywhere she went. They were twins, Stacy and Lacy. I believe their names were. I don’t know what their parents were thinking when they named them, but I was definitely not going to speak my mind on that subject. I didn’t have the courage in me to be rude in any way. “Milo, Gina, I hope to see you two at the party tonight.” She said to them before looking at me. “Yara, right?” She said my name. She actually said my name. She knew who I was. I must have looked like an i***t as my eyes widened. Although no one made any reaction to my reaction. I just nodded my head as I felt awkward already from widening my eyes. “You are also invited, it’s to… relax everyone from the stress of next week. You know, with the due essays and tests. Only one week left until we get a break from studying.” She chuckled and everyone, myself included, chuckled with hers. “Hope you come.” She said, showing her perfect smile. “Looks like I will be there,” I said and everyone was happy with what I said. “See you then,” Stephanie said before walking away with her two red-haired friends. “I hope you have a sexy dress,” Gina said, smiling. “I hope you do too. I’ll see you ladies tonight.” Milo said as he stood and walked over to his male friends. “I may have..” I re didn’t want to say it but it was better than letting Gina pick a dress for me. “Sexy dress.” I flashed her a smile. “Perfect.” She smiled. I sure hope that this party will be worth it. I don’t like being distracted from my studies. It was all I had, all I worked for, I worked very hard for. I was an orphan, just left in the footsteps of the orphanage I called home for all my eighteen years. This scholarship was all I had. It was the only thing that could get me to a great place in life. In the real world, the human world was a cruel place. I learned that early on in life. As an orphan with no one, no family of my own blood to help me. I had to help myself to get here before I turned eighteen and couldn’t stay at the orphanage anymore. I worked for this and I intended to keep it. However, there was only one party. I have never gone to a party. Well, in all honesty, I have never been invited to one before. Or even interested in going to any party. But it was only one. One party won’t hurt. Would it? . . . . I walked out of the dentist's, I was moving my jaw. I still couldn’t get over the feeling that the braces were no longer on. It felt weird but it was definitely a good type of weird. I began to feel excited about the party. It would start in about two hours and that was plenty of time for me to go to my studio to get ready. I only lived a street away from the college. It was easy for me with my work being across from the college and the dentist only about a twenty-minute walk two streets over. That was why I was happy with the studio apartment that I had. It wasn’t fancy or perfect, it wasn’t exactly in good condition, but it was just perfect for me. I smiled while walking to my apartment, but I wasn’t used to smiling with my teeth, just my lips. I was yet to get used to flashing the perfect smile I now had. I had just unlocked my apartment door and walked in. I didn’t want to take too long to get ready, I wasn’t that type of girl. I had a quick bath and shaved my legs and underarms, only because of the dress I was going to wear. I dried out my damp hair and put in some hair cream to keep my hair moisturised. I brushed my hair out and decided to let my natural waves hang freely. I put on light makeup, not the full fountain and blush stuff. I was not that type of girl, mascara and lip gloss on my pink lips was it for me. My eyebrows were nice and clean already and I didn’t have any pimples, so my natural clear skin had me looking a little different than it used to. I wore contacts instead of my glasses. I wanted to blend in for the night, just this one night. I put on my so-called sexy dress. Well, to me, it was sexy. I liked it, which was why I bought it. It was the only nice thing I was willing to buy as a treat for myself. I wasn’t big on spending, I would rather save the money I earned from my job at the café. I only paid my monthly rent and bought food and the rest of my money would go into my savings. I picked up my black-shirred-ruffle-hem-fitted dress and put it on. I didn’t want to wear heels, so I put on my white converse sneakers. They were the only shoes I owned, besides the black heels. I only wore the heels once at my high school dance and I haven’t worn them since, but I definitely didn’t want to wear them to this party. I checked myself in my mirror. I definitely didn’t know the person staring back at me. I was impressed that I looked decant. I didn’t look like the nerd that I was in high school or college. A knock on my door caused me to stop admiring the hidden beauty that I had been scared to show. “Hey…” Gina said the second I opened the door. “Damn girl! You look fine.” She shrieked. I blushed at her words. I looked at her sexy split-detailed satin cami purple bodycon dress. She looked sexy for sure. “Spin! I need to see all the goods.” I did as she asked. “Wow, your butt is a beautiful sight.” She was in shock as she complimented me. “Stop,” I said, I was blushing and felt embarrassed. “Maybe this is too much, I should change.” I attempted to go over to my other clothes but Gina stopped me. “No! This is perfect and, besides, the party has started. Milo is downstairs waiting in his car.” He grabbed me as I quickly reached for my handbag which carried my apartment keys and phone. The second we walked out of my apartment, I saw Milo leaning on his car. He had blue denim jeans and a plain black shirt. Milo whistled, “Damn Yara!” He tipped his sunglasses. “You have boobs!” He clearly joked but, of course, my boobs showed their shape in this dress. He was the only boy that I would let joke about my body like that. I couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped me as I continued to blush. “Don’t tease her, I already did and she wanted to change,” Gina told Milo. “Well, in that case, both of you beautiful ladies get in the car. We have a party to attend.” He smiled. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to show up with not one but two sexy women.” Milo started his car as we drove to the party. We all laughed at Milo but he was right, not many men in college would show up with two beautiful women. I inhaled and exhaled. I couldn’t believe I was doing this. Going to a party instead of studying and getting my last assignments in. One party, just one party, I constantly reminded myself.
